I know I continue to sound like a broken record when I speak of amazing transformations on Upshur Street but here is another amazing transformation on Upshur Street. You have to remember this is the former, troubled Riyad market:

And that’s just a tiny slice. Ruta Del Vino is the Latin American Wine Bar and Restaurant that we first heard about a year ago. Now they are very very close to opening – I’m told the soft opening should be in about a week or so and the proper opening in about two weeks or so (knock wood, knock wood!) But as you can tell the space is 99% completed and just a jaw dropper dominated by a huge wrap around bar (lots more photos after the jump.) “After a long search, we’re pleased to announce we’ve hired an executive chef.
Chef Victor Meneses began his career in his hometown of Albuquerque, NM, helping his father prepare authentic Mexican street food for his camión (food truck). At fourteen, Victor began working as a dishwasher and prep cook for a local New Mexican Restaurant. Soon, he landed a job at the northern Italian restaurant Scalo and trained under award-winning chef Jonathan Perno, working his way through every station in the restaurant, honing his skills and technique and expanding his knowledge of Italian cuisine.
A few years later, Victor moved to the Washington, DC area to attend L’Academie de Cuisine. While in school, he worked for the late culinary legend Michel Richard at Citronelle and learned the importance of building flavors and refining technique. Victor completed his culinary externship at Equinox, known for imaginative, seasonal, regional American cuisine. After that, he worked for Chef Tony Chittum at Notti Bianche. Soon, Victor was promoted to sous chef, then to executive sous chef. Over the next few years, he continued to learn from the best chefs in the area, working with Drew Trautmann of Sonoma on Capitol Hill, Jeff Black of Black’s Bar & Kitchen in Bethesda, and Ethan McKee of Circle Bistro.
Victor relocated to South Florida seven years ago and was intrigued and inspired by the area’s produce and seafood, preferring to use products that are locally sourced. He allows nature to dictate his menu, mixing the subtle with the unexpected, avoiding trends in favor of elegance and timelessness. Freshness, simplicity and depth of flavor are his trademarks, and he strives to execute every dish with care and attention. During his time in Florida, he was executive chef for one of south Florida’s best Mexican restaurants, El Camino, which was voted one of the top 100 restaurants in the country two years in a row by OpenTable.
At Ruta del Vino, Victor will design a menu covering a broad array of Latin American cuisines to pair with wines from across Latin America.

“There was a gunfight at 14th and Taylor Street NW tonight [Tuesday] around 8 or 9pm. I just wanted to share some photos of my friend’s car which got hit in the crossfire. Pictures include a shattered back window, cracked front window, bullet hole in the driver’s seat headrest (!!!) and bullet sitting in the driver’s seat. Sheesh, this town sometimes…”

“We are currently working a sounds of gunshots/destruction of property in the 800 B/O Crittenden Street, NW. At 0010 hours, CIC ShotSpotter detected (17) gunshots in front of 8xx Crittenden Street, NW. Officers responded to the scene and located a vehicle parked in the block that had been struck by gunfire as well as gunshots to 8xx, 8xx, 8xx, and 8xx Crittenden Street, NW. There are NO victims located at this point. Officers are interviewing home occupants to obtain a suspect lookout, but no lookout as of yet. MPD gun K-9 has been requested and area hospitals are being checked for victims. (9) cartridge casings have been located so far on the side of 8xx Crittenden Street, NW.”

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch have announced an arrest in the fatal stabbing that occurred in the 600 block of Emerson Street, Northwest, on Monday, October 17, 2016.
At approximately 8:03 pm, members of the Fourth District responded to a call for a stabbing. Upon arrival, members located a juvenile female suffering from a stab wound. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and commenced lifesaving efforts. The victim was then transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The decedent has been identified as 17-year-old Kaelia Minor, of Northwest, DC.
On Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at approximately 3:15 pm, 18-year-old Kyla Jones of Northwest, DC, was arrested at the Homicide Branch, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant charging her with Murder Two while Armed.”

This week the Reading Room DC turns one! At this time last year we were finishing up our brand new bar (within a bar), and putting the finishing touches on menu planning with Chantal Tseng and Daniel A Searing Jr. Since then we’ve been lucky enough to add Carlie Steiner to our lineup, and the rest is history.

“u/d PROBABLE HOMICIDE AFTER METROBUS ALTERCATION- Emerson St at Kansas Av NW-DC. Victim is a woman in her 20s. Teenage female suspect fled.”
Update from MPD:
“Today at approximately 8:00 pm two females got into an argument on a Metrobus. Once the bus dropped them off at the corner of Kansas Ave and Emerson St N.W. one of the females stabbed the other in the chest. The victim was transported to the hospital where she died from her injuries. Homicide Detectives and Metro Transit Police are checking for video from the bus. I want to assure the residents of the 4th District that this Homicide is in no way connected to the ones on Kennedy St or Buchanan St. 4D PSA Officers are working closely with our Homicide Detectives to close these cases. I would like to invite each of you to the 4th District Citizens Advisory Council Meeting. 4th District Headquaters 6001 Georgia Ave N.W. this Thursday, October 20th at 7:00pm. Interm Chief Peter Newsham as well as members of the 4th District will be in attendance to address any concerns which you may have.”

“On my lawn today I found a stuffed horse. That is in the 3800 block of 10th street NW. I really want to find the owner. I am 10 so I know how it is to lose a stuffy.”
