“Dear PoP,

I wanted to let you know that Park View will be getting some new alleys on the 600 block of Princeton Place, Quebec Place, and Rock Creek Church Road later this week. After years of trying to get this done (we started this process in 2005) the Mayor has followed through on his walk-thru promise made just a little over a month ago.

We had a scare when workers said they would be replacing the brick with asphalt, but per the Mayors email below they will be brick! We really owe the Mayor a great big thank you, as this is a major improvement to our neighborhood.”

From the Mayor:

“Brick alleys will be repaved with brick. Non-brick alleys will be repaved non-brick. Sorry for the miscommunication/confusion.”

Hopefully it will look as nice as this.

Tina wrote about this great organization, located at 733 Euclid Street, NW, back in September ’08. It seems they’ve had a “minor setback” (from an email):

“We had a break-in last Friday evening which has left me without a laptop or backup drive (lesson learned – don’t keep them together). There were a number of valuables taken, but nothing that really was at the heart of what we do, and for that I am grateful.

Between the losses and funds needed to secure the doors, we will have about $2,000 worth of unexpected expenses. If you would like to help out with a tax-deductible donation, we would greatly appreciate it. You can donate online at http://www.ecacollective.  Alternatively, if you would like to donate any of the following items, please contact me at (202) 462-2285.

Laptop Computer
Backup Hard Drive
Digital Camera
Digital Audio Recorder
Cordless Phone set
Power Tools (drill, jigsaw, sander)
Stereo

Fortunately, the list of things that weren’t taken is much longer. Many thanks to Jo Strowder and Dr. Ernest Quimby who jumped in with last minute loaner equipment so we wouldn’t have to cancel our children’s Summer Heritage Program today, and to those who have been helping me reconstruct the last six months.

Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sylvia”

“Dear PoP,

I noticed that this house on Newton Pl is still on the market.

It was actually a GDoN in its pre-renovated condition and was also a GDoN revisited.

I think it would be interesting for people to weigh in on it now that it’s renovated and back on the market. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t sold yet.”

This home  is located at 529 Newton Place, NW:

The flier says:

“Gorgeous renovation of Columbia Hts end unit brick row house * Gourmet kitchen with granite counters, stainless steel appliances, and ceremic tile floor * Two bedrooms and 1 full baths with new fixtures, vanity and tub surround. Gleaming wood floors * Shows great, a must see!”

More info and photos found here.

Wow, this is kinda cool. So before the reno it sold for $165,000. Now it has been renovated and can be yours for $249,955. Think that is a realistic mark up for the 2 bed/1bath?

Coming to 1309 F Street, NW is FunXion, a new tavern to be serving “burgers, pizza, chicken and salads”. There could also be dancing, DJs and live bands:

And at 2608 Georgia Ave., the former home of ShowOff Apparel, the storefront has been fixed up:

There were a bunch of cards for MonaVie a company that:

“Introduced in January 2005, MonaVie develops and markets scientifically formulated, premium quality nutritional products, specifically for person-to-person distribution.”

What is “person-to-person distribution”? Is that like door to door sales? Anyone ever hear of MonaVie?

About a month ago I mentioned that a new bar was coming to Georgia Ave but I wasn’t able to provide any details at the time. I’m happy to report I got the details Monday evening. I met with owner Bill Dean and his associate Ted Trabue at the space Monday evening to learn more about their plans.

Ted Trabue left, Bill Dean right

Well, enough with the suspense. It’s going to be a proper sports bar to be called The Green Room. Mr. Dean explained that it will become “a real quality sports bar/pub, serving draft beers, and providing plenty of televisions to watch the game”. There will be a small menu serving items like sliders and wings. The look will include exposed brick walls and possibly a small deck out back.

Here’s the time frame – once they get the proper permits in three weeks or so construction will begin. Construction should take 3-4 months with the hope of opening in time for the NFL playoffs or at least the Superbowl.

Both Mr. Dean and Mr. Trabue were super enthusiastic about the project. However, in addition to Mr. Trabue, Martin Corboy will also be consulting on the project. Mr. Corboy is behind the Blaguard (in Adams Morgan) and McFadden’s (downtown). Mr. Dean also has experience in the industry as a co-founder of the Eye Bar at 17th and I St. as well as the American Tap Room in Reston.

Mr. Dean explained that this is a long term investment in the community for him. And indeed this is only the begining for Mr. Dean and his partners. Mr. Dean also purchased the two adjoining properties at 3630 and 3628 Georgia Ave. Initially there were plans to combine all three properties into a media lounge (including broadcasting capabilities) with a bar on the first floor. Thus the name The Green Room for the bar. The media lounge would be housed on the upper floors. Unfortunately the economy made this ambitious plan a bit unrealistic at the moment. So the idea now is to start with the sports bar and reassess in a few years. (And during that time he will continue to own the adjoining properties one of which is currently a beauty salon.) Mr. Dean says that he plans to be a presence in the area for at least 50 years.

Personally I’m pretty psyched about getting a sports bar. Sound good to you guys?

It looks like the phone company Cricket is coming full force to DC. Above is a new spot they’ll be coming to at the corner of Georgia Ave. and Gresham. And as we noted a few weeks ago, they’ll also be coming to the corner of 14th and U and 1652 Columbia Road.

“Dear PoP,

It looks like there is some action (paint, lighting) going on inside the empty store front to the left of Ercilia’s on Mt. P St. I can’t remember if that was the former deli spot or what…”

I took a look at the former Mt. Pleasant Deli spot but sadly there were no workmen there to inquire what was going. I’ll keep my eye on the spot though and update as soon as more info becomes available.

Thanks to a reader for sending and props to MPD for making the arrests. This could’ve turned into a disaster. Very scary stuff:

“high speed car chase happened around 2pm. it ended a block west of warder and park (the alley by the apartments). 4 suspects were caught (that were in the stolen vehicle). but they cannot find the weapon. the SUV was stolen at gunpoint. the car was smoking when the police caught them. idiots drove into a back street/alley, popped the end of the parking lot and started driving on the sidewalks of the complex. they bottomed out the car when the popped the concrete end of the lot and drove down the hill- which prob started the smoke. there is a possible accomplice that got away.”

Mr. Trotman was tragically struck down Monday evening in Park View due to more senseless violence that is plaguing our city. It is easy to debate statistics but we must not forget that some of the victims are innocents who are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. My deepest sympathies to Mr. Trotman’s family and loved ones for this tragic loss.

From Ryan’s sisters:

“This is Ryan Randy Trotman’s older sister. It was a senseless crime and the person who committed it should pay. We have lost our beloved brother at the tender age of 28 years. He will be missed.”

and from Ryan’s younger sister:

“Yes the victim was Ryan Randy Trotman he is my brother. And to address the person who “heard” that he was being chased lets verify that statement okay. He was merely standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. He died due to senseless violence.”

And from Ryan’s Mother:

“A damn hard working young man, who graduated from District of Columbia with a double major. Was up to the time of his death doing 2 jobs. He was well brought up and well trained, humble and respectful up to his death. Please honor others feelings and stop insinuating things that are not true.” -says our mother

From CM Graham:

“Two days ago, on June 22, 2009, Ryan Randy Trotman of Maryland was killed on the 600 block of Quebec Pl. MPD has arrested Troy Renard Thomas, 18 years old, of the 3000 block of 3rd St., NW in this case.”

Thanks to all who sent in photos:

“Here’s a pic of the overturned car at Otis and Park Pl. The story I heard was that the shooting started at Warder and Quebec. The guy in this car, got into his car and sped off. He had been shot. The white car had been parked along Park Pl.”

And from MPD via CM Bowser:

“On Monday, June 22, 2009, at 2156 hours units from the Third District were dispatched to the 600 block of Quebec Pl., NW, for the report of a shooting. Moments later they received a second run for a traffic accident involving an overturned vehicle two blocks away at the intersection of Park Pl & Otis Pl NW. Upon the arrival of the officers they located an adult female in the 600 block of Quebec Pl NW, suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. They located a male victim at the scene of the traffic accident in the 3600 block of Park Pl., NW. The male was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds which, it was learned, he received while he was in the 600 block of Quebec Pl., NW. The DCFD responded to the scene and transported the victims to area hospitals. The male was transported to MedSTAR, where he was pronounced dead at 2350 hours.”
