From a press release:

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today celebrated House passage of her Southwest Waterfront redevelopment bill (H.R. 2297), which is now headed to the White House for President Obama to sign into law. The bill clarifies the legal status of property at the Southwest Waterfront in order to allow the District to move forward with a major redevelopment project that will include 2.5 million square feet of hotel, office, retail, and residential space, as well as clear the way for increased maritime activity there. Norton expects the issuance of a permit by the fall, and the groundbreaking in January.

“This is a major economic development bill for the District of Columbia,” Norton said. “The bill allows the District to move forward with a 21st-century vision for the Southwest Waterfront, the most valuable underused asset in the District. Restrictions on the District’s own land have long prevented the city from putting the Southwest Waterfront to its best use, driven down property values, and deprived residents and visitors alike of a vibrant waterfront. In the end, the city will have a world-class Southwest Waterfront to match the Southeast Waterfront, now called The Yards, being redeveloped from our prior bill. D.C. residents will have access to jobs and small business opportunities to build a new waterfront as well as to thousands of permanent jobs that will come with the new mixed-use Southwest Waterfront. Our city will get millions of dollars in new tax revenue annually.”

635 New York Ave, NW

From District Crossfit:

“As many of you have probably heard by now, thanks to the Washingtonian, we are very happy to announce that District CrossFit will be opening a new location in the Southwest Waterfront. The new gym will be located on 1525 Half Street SW in eyeshot of the National’s Ballpark.

The new space will be 10,000 square feet. To put that in perspective, our New York Ave. location is just shy of 3,500 square feet.

Barring any major setbacks, we plan on opening the doors on September 1st of this year.”

“Unfortunately we also have some sad news:

Potentially as soon as November 1st, 2012; we will be forced to close our doors at 635 New York Ave. While planning a new space (even back while we were at 624 NY Ave) we have always had every intention of keeping two locations up and running; Andrew even moved to the City Vista apartments 3 weeks ago in anticipation of DCF being in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood for a long time. However, a few days ago we received notice from our landlord that they intend to re-develop this block with a large office building. We are hoping to negotiate our way into a few more months at 635 but unfortunately our time here is more limited than we want. Seeing as DCF was born on NY Ave this news is absolutely heartbreaking to us. We’ve tried (and continue to try) to fight for every extra day we can.”

From MPD:

Shortly before 8:30 this morning a women was confronted by a gunman as she exited her vehicle in the 100 block of G St SW. The assailant demanded the victim’s car keys, she complied and the suspect fled in the victim’s vehicle. Thankfully the victim was not injured. The first MPD unit arrived on the scene quickly and broadcasted a lookout for the vehicle. The vehicle was almost immediately spotted and a pursuit was initiated. There was a lengthy pursuit of the vehicle through DC and PG County that involved units from US Capital PD, PG County PD, MPD and the US Park Police helicopter. This chase culminated in the apprehension of a suspect in the Sixth District.

The apprehension of this dangerous felon was possible due to the cooperative efforts of multiple agencies and outstanding police work by multiple officers. The teamwork of these officers resulted in the recovery of the victim’s vehicle and arrest of a suspect, all accomplished without injury to anyone. I particularly want to recognize the work of the Sixth District officers who assisted in this apprehension.
