“Dear PoPville,

You may have already covered this with the SW Safeway, but the receipt checking has been rolled out at the L Street location too (Sexy Safeway, if one goes by the nicknames to identify the location). Ed. Note: CityVista Safeway

I’m through this location frequently, since I walk past it going home most nights and usually run in at least twice a week to pick up something random that I need for dinner that night or an item that I forgot. So usually 1-4 items picked up, and I’m usually quick to get in and get out so I can get home as early as possible. They just began their receipt checking in maybe the last week or so. The first time I smiled and said no thank you when she asked to see my receipt. She said–nicely–after me, “ok, next time then.” The second time, I did the same. Smiled and politely said no thank you, to which the checker snapped that it was store policy. I told her I wasn’t required to show her anything and kept walking. Seems they’re trying to get more aggressive at this point, but they still allow me to proceed no problem with just a quick, no thank you.

Last night I show up and it looks like a border crossing. They have at least 4 employees posted in the area between the starbucks and the elevators. There is a whole line of products that divide the area in two and people are being funneled into the narrower passage along the elevator wall so that it’s nearly impossible to exit without being physically blocked by the receipt checkers. I notice a distracted receipt checker on the side closest to the starbucks, the area they seemed to have designated as the entrance to the store, and walk right past. I glance out of the corner of my eye as I walk out the door to see the guy trying to wave me back and saying something although I’m out of ear shot at that point. I can see that they’re going to make it extremely difficult for anyone to pass without getting into an altercation, and they have no right to do so. They may ask me for my receipt, but I have every right to decline.

I’ve emailed the general customer service email and they’ve told me they’ve forwarded my complaint to the store manager and the district manager. I’ve also sent their twitter account a quick note since that method seems to get faster responses for other companies. I explained that it’s my personal property after I’ve paid, that I don’t need to stand in line for someone to glance at my receipt, and that I don’t appreciate being treated like a criminal whenever I shop at safeway.

If they’re concerned about shoplifting, then they need to redirect their resources in a way that will actually prevent shoplifting, not in a way that harasses every single customer who walks through their doors. I can see the situation escalating to the point where they block me (or anyone else who refuses this ‘policy’) or lay a hand on me to prevent me from leaving. It’s interesting that the instituted this policy here only after the Giant closed down. It’s gotten crowded enough in this location that I really don’t need to wait on yet another line for someone to search my bags before leaving the store. They’ll lose a customer fast (and I’m sure many others) if they continue this policy.”

Do you guys think the receipt checking is unreasonable? I think they do it at the Rhode Island Ave Home Depot as well. Would you stop shopping at a store that required you to show a receipt before leaving?

As always just let me know why you want to go and I’ll pick a winner at 4pm!

Ed. Note: Last time a reader complained that I only picked heart wrenching stories that can’t possibly be beat by “normal people”. In addition to some heart warming winners, well, I’ve picked winners who’ve entered first, entered last, and other completely random picks. So fear not and good luck!

Also please make sure you have access to email at 4pm to confirm winning. If I don’t hear back in 15 minutes I’ll have to pick an alternate winner.

“Dear PoP,

Are there any recommendations you can give to 1st time homebuyer with a meager budget of 150k in dc?”

Ah, this is a challenging one. Personally, I would look to buy in the SW Waterfront. There are a number of developments in the queue, the new Safeway, the new Arena Stage and you’re right on the waterfront not to mention you are also close to all the SE development. In a very quick search I liked this coop located at 1311 Delaware Ave SW:

The flier says:

“Check out the new kitchen, floors and paint in this lovely and spacious one bedroom on 3rd floor balcony with view. Fee includes property taxes and all utilities, extended cable package. Parking $35 mo.”

You can find more info here and photos here.

This 1 bed/1 bath is going for $130,000 ($573 monthly coop fee).

If you guys had $150k budget where would you recommend?

From the MPD-1D listserv:

This incident occurred after the baseball game on Wednesday night- I have a young man staying at my place until the summer and he was terrorized by a couple of “young thugs” while walking home from the baseball game. Please see below:

“I was assaulted last night walking home from the baseball game. A group of guys tried to rob me. I took a pretty hard hit to the head. The same guys chased me to the apartment complex after I left the police station. I literally closed the gate on them. I don’t know what would have happened if I didn’t make it into the complex. I’m fine, have a pretty bad headache and a sore jaw, that’s about it. I didn’t go to work today and am getting checked out at the doctor right now just to be safe. Just wanted to let you know what happened, I’m okay- don’t worry.”

It’s very dangerous to walk home at night in this area. These young boys were hanging out at the park after they had assaulted this young man.

MPD Commander Daniel Hickson responded:

Unfortunately the SW and Nationals Park area experienced three robberies or assaults (with intent to rob) between Monday and Tuesday. The first event was a Robbery which occurred on Monday at about 10 pm in the 1100 block of New Jersey Ave SE, the second offense was the one referenced in the below email which occurred on Tuesday at about 10:25 pm in the Unit block of M St SW and the third was a robbery that occurred on Tuesday at about 11:45 pm in the 1400 block of 4th St SW. In each of these offenses, the assailants were described as a group of juvenile suspects, including 5 or more individuals.

A short time after the last robbery occurred, First District patrol officers assigned to Curfew Patrol observed several juveniles who were in violation of curfew laws. When they stopped these subjects they observed that several of them matched the description of the assailants from the Fourth St incident. The detectives were notified and subsequently two of the individuals were identified as participants in the last robbery and they were arrested.

We are investigating the strong similarities in all three offenses: time, location, method and description of assailants. The First District Detectives are conducting follow-up investigations focused on the two juveniles arrested, as well as others who were in their company. When an update is available, I will advise.

“Dear PoP,

I just moved from NW to SW and I’m loving the new Safeway by me, but I was really disappointed to read this in the Metro Weekly:

‘We put our groceries up on the conveyer belt, some frozen dinner and wine, and [the cashier] said, ‘Oh God, they’re faggots,”’ says Morgan. ”And then Brendan said, ‘I’m sorry I didn’t hear what you said.’ And she said ‘You guys are fucking faggots.”’

Had you heard about this? This poor couple is shopping at the 14th & P Whole Foods now just to avoid the humiliation of walking back into that Safeway.”

This is the first I’ve heard. I saw on twitter last night that MetroWeekly posted a video apology from the cashier.

This is a supremely sad situation. It is appalling, frustrating, and like I said, really really sad. It always amazes me when slurs like this are still used in 2011. There is still a lot of hate and ignorance in the world.

I really don’t mean to be insensitive but I wonder if Safeway and/or local groups/politicians (ANC, Civic groups, CM Tommy Wells) can take advantage of this situation and start an education campaign or simply a set of meetings where people meet each other in a casual setting. Maybe I’m being unrealistic. What the cashier said is beyond appalling but I wonder how much of it comes from hate or how much comes from ignorance? I’m disgusted by this whole episode and I hope nobody has to encounter such a painful experience again.
