Capitol Riverfront BID Responds: “A BYOB option is not possible under the park insurance policy, without which we could not offer the concerts”

Capitol Riverfront BID has released A Letter from the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District:

“Good afternoon:

We are writing to you as patrons and supporters of the Capitol Riverfront Friday Night Concert Series at Yards Park. We want to thank everyone who has attended the concert series and made it and Yards Park such a popular riverfront destination. The park has become what the creators of the Anacostia Waterfront Framework Plan envisioned back in 2003 – an opportunity for all to enjoy access to the Anacostia River through a beautiful public park.

Over the past five years, the popularity of the concerts has soared. Back in the summer of 2011, crowds averaged 100 people. Now the concerts routinely top 3,000 attendees, with one concert attracting over 5,000. As we continually evaluate the operation of the park and the concert series, we have considered annually whether the BYOB option is consistent with our park operations, and also whether it is operationally sustainable and insurable.

We discussed the likely changes with city officials and Capitol Riverfront stakeholders. The decision to omit the BYOB option, which occurred prior to any sponsorship decisions, was made for several important reasons, including: (more…)

The Friday night concert series now features Corona and Modelo beers exclusively, plus the fun of rent-a-cops searching your bags. I’m hoping the PoPville community can help contact the Riverfront BID and let them know what a terrible decision this was.”

Liquor License Placard Posted for Whaley’s by Yards Park

Small updated on Whaley’s coming to the awesome Lumber Shed building. The placard says:

“New full-service upscale casual seafood restaurant. Live Entertainment will be provided. Total Occupancy Load is 71. Two Summer Gardens, one with 32 seats and one with 18 seats.”

They’ll be located right between Agua 301 and Osterini Morini, with a beautiful view of the river.

Side note PSA: Yards Park, Capitol Riverfront, Navy Yard whatever you want to call it is absolutely beautiful this time of year.  If you don’t work or live nearby – it’s well worth a visit.

“Grosvenor Americas, a property investment and development company, today released a rooftop rendering of their F1RST residential community in Washington, D.C.’s Capitol Riverfront neighborhood. The rendering reveals the District’s first rooftop stadium-seating view into Nationals Park. F1RST will deliver in early 2017. [1277 First Street, SE]

“F1RST will be the first residential community in the Capitol Riverfront with expansive views into Nats Park,” said Jonathan Carr, senior vice president of development for Grosvenor’s D.C. office. “Next year, F1RST residents can be a part of Opening Day by relaxing at home – on their rooftop. The F1RST rooftop will be a fantastic environment for the residents.”

F1RST is designed to LEED Silver and will offer 325 rental apartments, of which 50 will be offered at below market rental rates. F1RST not only provides an outdoor rooftop theatre for residents, but the 450,000-square-foot mixed-used development will also provide an array of amenities including a rooftop pool and hot tub, full-service concierge staff and a 2,300-square-foot fitness center. “Skanska USA Commercial Development announced today that Open Road, owned by Metropolitan Hospitality Group (MHG), will be the second restaurant and bar tenant at 99M. Open Road joins MHG’s CIRCA in the 11-story, 234,000-square-foot Class A office building in Washington’s Capitol Riverfront submarket.

“We believe this location will become the center and heartbeat of the revitalized Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, which is why we are bringing Open Road to 99M,” said Matt Carlin, President, Metropolitan Hospitality Group. “Open Road and CIRCA will thrive here as a place to come as you are, grab a drink and share a meal with friends and family.”

Open Road will have an industrial chic décor, featuring reclaimed wood, steel, brick, and iron. The menu will feature seasonal ingredients used to create culinary variations to traditional American favorites complimented by handcrafted cocktails, and an extensive beer, whiskey, and bourbon collection. Many of the beers on tap will be sourced from local craft breweries.

Open Road and CIRCA will utilize approximately 8,400 square feet of the 11,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space located on the ground floor of 99M. MHG and Skanska anticipate a summer 2018 opening for both restaurants. (more…)

Chix coming to Navy Yard this Summer

“Chix is hatching its third location this summer in Navy Yard: 1210 Half Street, SE Washington DC 20003. The fast casual concept aims to open in July, adjacent to the Navy Yard Metro stop and one block from Nationals Park. The space is 1,972 SqFt, and will have about 45 seats.

Chix will feature the same affordable menu as its other two stores, located at 2019 11th St NW (est. 2007) and 1121 14th St NW (est. 2013). We will be open 7 days a week and we will offer dine-in, takeout and delivery for lunch and dinner, as well as catering. The owners (married duo Lukas Umana and Victoria Garcia-Umana) plan on keeping the look very casual and simple like the other Chix restaurants – using mostly repurposed, recycled and eco-friendly construction materials. “When we design a space we don’t seek to replicate our other stores, rather we get inspired by the neighborhood and we shop around locally for unique used pieces that we reuse or repurpose,” said Victoria Garcia-Umana.
