Lots of folks have been eagerly anticipating the new restaurant, RANGE, from chef Bryan Voltaggio opening up in the Chevy Chase Pavilion by the Friendship Heights metro. I was able to attend a media preview last night and felt like I was launched into the future:

From a press release:

RANGE encompasses 14,000 square feet where the open kitchen design allows the 300 seats a view and ample interaction with the team of chefs. The kitchen stations include charcuterie, bakery, raw bar, rotisserie, wood fired hearth, dessert and candy, and coffee bar. Voltaggio’s approach promotes the use of whole animals such as Border Springs Farm lambs and Roseda Black Angus Farm steers that are butchered on-site and featured in a collection of offerings that include alternative cuts like shoulders, legs, and offal. Local game, fowl and the freshest seafood straight from the Chesapeake also grace the menu to meet all appetites. One menu is presented throughout the restaurant and highlights seasonal ingredients sourced from the Mid-Atlantic region prepared through classic and progressive techniques.

Back in Feb. 2012 we learned that Bryan Voltaggio would be opening a new restaurant, Range, in the Chevy Chase Pavilion by the Friendship Heights metro.

The project is moving forward and they’ve recently applied for a liquor license which says:

“This is a new restaurant serving American style cuisine. Total Occupancy Load is 566.”

Don’t forget in addition to the restaurant there will also be a bakery and retail shop.

There is still major construction going on inside the Chevy Chase Pavilion but you can see from a rendering it will be on the top floor. Updates as construction progresses.

Dear PoPville,

Did you know that apparently Clover Market at 5014 Connecticut Ave. NW has closed . . . One of the last of the old fashioned, neighborhood grocery stores . . . I don’t know how long it was around – but I have lived in DC since 1982 and I certainly know that it was here since long before that . . .

Sad — as another, small independent goes out of business.

Clover Market was located across the street from Politics and Prose bookstore. Looks like a demo permit has been issued but it’s not clear who the new tenant will be:

5015 Connecticut Ave, NW

Back in June 2011 Politics and Prose was purchased by new owners:

“Carla Cohen died in October 2010, and in June 2011, Politics & Prose was purchased by Bradley Graham and Lissa Muscatine. Brad was a longtime journalist with The Washington Post. His wife, Lissa, also worked as a Post journalist for a number of years, and then served as a speechwriter to Hillary Clinton at both the White House and the State Department.”

I hadn’t heard about any changes until now. They’ve recently applied for a liquor license:

“The nature of the business is a bookstore. Entertainment consists of poetry readings and author presentations. Food will be light, consisting of pre-packaged, ready to eat items.

Sunday 10 am – 8 pm, Monday through Saturday 9 am – 10 pm”

According to their Web site the future will:

“look for new ways to make books a popular entertainment to compete with other leisure activities. We will continue to explore links between books and travel and the arts, as well as books that help us understand ourselves and our world. We will be planning trips, meals together, movies, music, and other activities that enrich our lives.”

You can see a calendar of events here.

As books and beer are among my favorite things in life, I’m pretty psyched about this!
