Dear PoPville – Info on Mt. Pleasant Muggings

Dear PoPville,

I just wanted to share my experience and ask if anyone had more information about the string of muggings that has hit Mount Pleasant lately. Apparently on Friday night there was a mugging/assault on the corner of Brown Street and Oak. According to the cops I met on Saturday (more on that later) the suspects were two black males.

On Saturday night at around 3am I heard a noise outside my window, looked out and had front row seats to a brutal assault and mugging on Brown Street. At first it appeared that it was a 3-on-1, they easily knocked an older Latino man unconscious, his head hit the curb as he fell. Two of them took his wallet and ran, while the 3rd oddly stayed back and laid down on the ground next to the unconscious man and pretended to be hurt as well. I turned away to call 911 and when I turned back the two assailants were back, robbing the second guy! He had been hit/stabbed in the head with a wooden stake and was bleeding profusely from the head. The perps were both Latino and young. One was about 6’1″ 175 and the second was 5’5″ 140.

I spoke with the cops for about half an hour and told them what I’d seen. They seemed set on the assailants being black, but I assured them they were not. The police said there had been a string of muggings lately in the area. It seemed like the assailants were targeting (very) drunk men leaving the Mt. Pleasant Street bars who walk down Brown to their homes.

I had heard rumors that the incident on Friday night was of a woman walking her dog, and possibly involved a sexual assault, but I have not heard anything confirmed about that. My roommates and I have been trying to find any new information, but have gotten nothing. Any information would be welcome.

Appreciating the Mt. Pleasant Fire Box Sculptures

I sometimes take for granted how incredible these fire box conversions are. I haven’t seen this one in years. It’s especially awesome how they incorporate both sides into the sculpture. It’s also pretty brilliant how they highlight different periods of history.

Dear PoPville – Burglary in Mt. Pleasant

Dear PoPville,

I live in a group house in Mt. Pleasant and we noticed that 3 bikes were missing. Turns out, our house was robbed Friday night. It was robbed while we were all in the house, while sleeping and all of the doors were locked. The thieves popped open a window, stuck their hand through the window and unlocked our back door in order to gain entry into the house. In addition to the bikes, they took other items like 2 dvd players, a camera, an external hard drive, etc. Based on when other roommates were or weren’t around last night, we figured out that it had to be between 1-4 am.

You may want to suggest to readers in Mt. Pleasant to be extra cautious. Apparently even if your doors are locked, it doesn’t necessarily mean your safe.

Drinking around Town – Last Exit

Today’s Drinking Around Town was written by dcreba. She lives – and often eats – in Logan Circle. Previously, she wrote about the newly renovated Art & Soul .

If you can find the Last Exit on your first try, you’re already ahead of the game. Although there is street level signage for the bar outside, the subterranean space is accessed via a side door within the parent bar, Tonic. The subtle signage and “you have to work to find me” vibe whispers speakeasy, but without a hint of pretension or exclusivity. Rather, once you find your way in, the narrow space is intimate and inviting, a bar within a bar.

Last Exit is busy celebrating its second anniversary this spring, and has re-released a list of infusions and classic craft and barrel aged cocktails. Clare Shipley, beverage manager at Last Exit, explains that all infusions are house made. Most are aged for 6-8 weeks, allowing the flavors to gently meld together. The cocktail menu designed by recently departed head bartender Anthony Rivera is composed of stalwarts and old favorites such as the Harrison, a rosemary and black peppercorn vodka creation. Mixed with tonic and served with a garnish of green grapes, it is a wildly successful combination of savory and sweet with a clean bite and smooth finish.
