Props to DCFD:
“We found Peanut. He was stuck in a tree all this time. The Columbia Heights fire station on Newton and 14th came to the rescue. I believe it’s Truck 6, Engine Company 11. I know I owe them big time – especially firefighter Steve McKnight who retrieved Peanut.”
“On the afternoon of Thursday, 9/25 two guys broke into our home through our front window. Our neighbor saw them walking up our front steps and loitering on our porch. She called me, I remotely turned on our alarm system, and she called the police. They had about 4 minutes in the house during the phone call and me figuring out how to turn on our alarm. Once the alarm triggered, they left.
In those few minutes they took three iPads, an expensive watch, a baby monitor, and some money.
They entered through a cracked and locked front window. The lock is a plastic latch which they broke.
My neighbor videoed them and I was able to extract a close up of their faces from the video – police have both.
If you see these two, contact police.”

3211 Mt Pleasant St, NW
That was fast. Zabver in the former Adam Express space soft opened on Sunday. Like Adam it’s still a small carryout space but the menu looks good. In a brief chat I was also told that the owners are the same folks from Asian Spice in Chinatown. Though the menu is likely to change a bit you can check out the soft opening menu after the jump. Anyone stop by for an early taste? (more…)

A reader reports:
“Car on fire at Mt. P street and Newton. Walked up to it just starting to burn. A guy calling 911 said someone threw “something on fire” through the drivers window. Burned pretty bad for a few minutes before cops and Fire engine came. Around 11:20pm”

From MPD:
“This morning [Saturday], at approximately 4 am, a resident of the 3200 block of Adams Mill Road was awakened by a strange noise. He got up to investigate, and noticed that a window on the front of his house was open. He quickly realized he had been burglarized and that several items, including his laptop computer, were missing.
He called the police and when they arrived they asked him to utilize the tracking function on the stolen computer to try to determine its current location. He did so, and the current location for the laptop was obtained. Detectives immediately drove to that location and spotted an individual sitting there utilizing a laptop which happened to be of the exact type that had been stolen. The computer as well as other items stolen from the house were recovered and the suspect was arrested and charged with burglary.”

“Dear PoPville,
On July 28th, a driver backed a mini-van onto the sidewalk in front of Marx Cafe on Mount Pleasant St, incident which was covered here on PoPville. Luckily, no pedestrians were hurt or killed and the restaurant narrowly avoided serious damage. However, there was one casualty – parking sign pictured here.
I took this picture on September 8. It’s nearing 2 months since the sign was knocked over. I walk by it almost every day. Once in a while I’ll tweet it to @DDOTDC or @DCDPW but day after day, the sign remains dejectedly on the ground as people walk by, my tweets lost in the abyss of bureaucratic morass.
Lately there have been a few comment threads on your blog discussing the tepid business environment on Mount Pleasant St, while other areas of the city are in the midst of investment bonanza. The symbolic nature of this sign sitting the ground for weeks was not lost on me, as I personally feel it represents the malaise and mediocrity of the entire corridor and seemingly few people willing to do much about it.”

Former Suns Discount Store, 3174 Mount Pleasant Street, NW at corner to the left of Bestworld
Thanks to all who sent world last week via the Mt. Pleasant listserv:
“It seems that *Subway (sandwich chain)* may be coming to Mount Pleasant. It would be at 3174 Mount Pleasant Street in the old toy store (white brick facade) adjacent to the Best World. This space borders Kilbourne St. and has been vacant for the past two years. The franchise owners are going through the permitting process now.”
Ed. Note: We spoke about Botanica Boricua coming to former Lamont Video Store at 3171 Mt. Pleasant St, NW here.

Located off 16th Street on the Mt. Pleasant side in full golden glory is Guglielmo Marconi:
“Guglielmo Marconi, 1st Marquis of Marconi was an Italian inventor and electrical engineer, known for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for his development of Marconi’s law and a radio telegraph system. He is often credited as the inventor of radio, and he shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun “in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy”. An entrepreneur, businessman, and founder in Britain in 1897 of The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company (which became the Marconi Company), Marconi succeeded in making a commercial success of radio by innovating and building on the work of previous experimenters and physicists.”
