These signs were up last year as well, I guess this building at the end of Mt. Pleasant Street puts up these signs every winter? I think it’s fantastic.

A commenter on Friday asked:

“can anyone confirm the rumor on mount pleasants forum that Pfieffers is LEAVING Mount Pleasant!?!?!!?!?! there goes one of, what?, 5 businesses that are worth a damn on the MTP strip.”

Well, I have good news and bad news for ya. I went this weekend and spoke with owner, Todd Pfieffer (who as nice as everyone says he is), at Pfieffer’s store at 3219 Mount Pleasant Street NW. Todd confirmed that indeed Pfieffer’s will be sold. Todd and his family will be moving to North Carolina to be closer to their family. That is the bad news. The good news is that Pfeiffer’s is still open and Todd believes the store will be sold around the time of the inauguration. More good news is that the store will remain a hardware store. It will be difficult for the new owners to be as nice as Todd is but it is also good news that store will remain filled and will remain a hardware store.

Anyone who has taken a walk down Mount Pleasant Street will know that it is home to a number of bodegas, grocery stores and food marts. But, long before Mount Pleasant Street became the main thoroughfare of Samuel Brown’s Mount Pleasant Village a little market stood at the Corner of Brown and Newton Streets.

My knowledge of the history of this market is limited, but I do know that it’s been a mainstay in the neighborhood since 1906, and in the late 80s was taken over by its current owners, a local Korean family. Conveniently named, the Brown Street Market, and conveniently located for the residents of the northeast corner of the ‘hood it seems as this place is a local favorite.

It’s pretty tiny inside but they make good use of the space, packing every available shelf with groceries – mostly canned and dried goods, miscellaneous household supplies, and an impressive wine and beer selection for the space. I also spotted a random basket of potatoes and onions – but that’s about as far as the produce selection goes. Up front there are freezer cases of frozen meals and ice cream and an interesting selection of candy. And for a nice neighborhood-friendly touch, there are some photos of nearby residents displayed above the counter.

If you don’t live in Mount Pleasant I probably wouldn’t recommend leaving your own neighborhood to check this place out, but if you do live nearby it’s a good spot to pick up some necessities. I lived only a few blocks away for a whole year and only recently discovered this place. One more reason I love this neighborhood, there’s always a little gem hiding where you least expect it!

Wikipedia defines a pupusa as a “thick, hand-made corn tortilla that is stuffed with one or more of the following; cheese, fried pork rind, squash, refried beans, or queso con loroco.” There is also a lengthy article describing the history and economy of the pupusa, as well as their numerous “cousins and variants.” Having only been introduced to the pupusa a mere two years ago, I have created my own definition which is all anyone who is unfamiliar with this treat needs to know: “delicious cheese-bomb.”

I do not declare myself to be a pupusa connoisseur, but I will say that though some are better than others – I have yet to meet a pupusa that I didn’t like. Lucky for me, I have many pupuserias at my disposal in Mount Pleasant, but Pupuseria San Miguel has become my favorite. Thanks to a big sign right outside it is hard to miss, but it is kind of hidden from the street, in the basement of 3110 Mount Pleasant Street. Continues after the jump. (more…)

I know folks had asked me in the past to post some fixer uppers so I thought this would be a good one since it’s in a pretty desirable location. So without photos is possible to determine if $499,999 is a good deal or not based on location?

Marx Cafe is located at 3203 Mount Pleasant St, NW. I know folks feel very strongly about this place. I can’t believe it but I still haven’t been yet. Are there any fans out there? Would you recommend brunch or dinner? Or would you not recommend it at all?

Update: Not to get off topic but I suppose this would be a good spot to add the Washington Post’s Paul Schwartzman’s piece on Mount Pleasant’s struggles. A resident is quoted:

“We’re in a downward spiral,” said Terry Lynch, a Mount Pleasant resident for more than 25 years. He motioned toward a ravaged apartment building and a vacant storefront. “This says, ‘Don’t bring your business to Mount Pleasant. Go to another neighborhood.’ “

Just thought I’d add this in case anyone missed it. Personally, I think folks are always overreacting when they mention Mount Pleasant’s demise…

I haven’t seen too many 2 bedrooms/1 bathroom so I’m curious to know what you think. Does $429,000 seem like a reasonable price?

This house on 1841 Park Road, NW was a house of the day back in December. A true classic from Mount Pleasant. So obviously this isn’t really a good deal or not post, it’s more like a check out some cool house porn post.

The flier says:

“An exquisite & significant historic property (1906). Beautifully preserved by only 2 owners for nearly 100 years, pristinely restored/renovated/expanded by the current owners between 2001 & 2003. Gorgeous gardens, fabulous 2-story carriage house/stables w/ 2-car parking, 2 lower level units, stunning original details.”

You have to check out the photos. And the price for this 7 bedroom, 5.5 bathroom mansion – $3,250,000. Ah, to dream…
