“My wife recently commissioned the attached mural for the side of our garage. The artist is Kellie Cox. Apparently this young woman is new to the DC area, having just arrived less than a year ago from Ithaca, NY. She did a wonderful job on our garage. Not only that, as it turns out she is one of the artists whose work is displayed on the new recycling trucks. I believe her truck will be wrapped this coming weekend. I thought you would enjoy this seeing the final product, and I trust the PoPville viewers will as well. Kellie is a delight and she’s bringing something beautiful to our urban scene here in Washington, DC. Again, we’re in South Manor Park, in Ward 4.”

“Dear PoPville,

I recently bought a home in Manor Park (built in 1927) and would like to restore the interior to its original style. I’ve tried googling “DC style homes 1927” and nothing relevant pops up. Do you know where I can go to get original photos of DC streets/homes “back in the day?”

I would start by going to the public library’s Washingtoniana Collection. You can also dig around Shorpy and the Library of Congress too. Where else should they look?

From a press release:

For the first time in its history, the nation’s capital has a licensed, professionally staffed veterinary facility dedicated to helping wild animals. City Wildlife expects their new facility at 15 Oglethorpe Street, NW, to handle as many as 1,200 orphaned, injured, and ill wild animals the first year. The center opened on July 1. Among the patients they have already rescued are:

o An Osprey who was struck by a truck on the Frederick Douglass Bridge, treated, and reunited with his family group;
o A sick pregnant squirrel, who gave birth to four babies while in City Wildlife’s care and was cured and released with a nest box for her new family; and
o A juvenile Ruby-Throated Hummingbird who was dying of starvation until the center nursed him back to health and prepares to send him to an environment with abundant nectar-producing flowers. (more…)

From MPD:

“This afternoon [Tuesday], at approximately 3:30 pm, a woman was walking in the 6200 block of 2nd Street, NW when she was approached from behind by a suspect who raised a knife to her and demanded her cell phone. The woman reacted by immediately trying to grab the knife away from the suspect. She was able to get control of the knife and she then used it to defend herself and repel the suspect. The suspect fled on foot and was apprehended by Fourth District officers some blocks away, having sustained significant injuries. The woman suffered minor injuries as she fought to defend herself from the suspect.”
