Back in Aug. ’11 we heard that Miss Pixie’s could lose her lease at (1626) 14th and R St, NW. So I was super happy to hear from a reader who forwarded me an email notice from Miss Pixie’s. It was announcing a 3rd Thursday sale for Dec. 15th with 10% off but the real news was at the bottom of the email:

“AND WE HAVE GREAT NEWS….OUR LEASE HAS BEEN RENEWED! FIVE MORE YEARS!”

Great news.

I was able to get a preview of the new Tortilla Coast coming to 15th and P St, NW in Logan Circle. Hard to believe it used to be a paint store. Also note, when the warm weather comes back they’re going to have some sweet outdoor seating on the 15th Street side.

The hope to open to the public in the next couple of weeks and a press release gives more details:

Tortilla Coast will open a second location at 1460 P Street NW, near Logan Circle, in mid-December. While the new restaurant will offer the same fun atmosphere and focus on freshly made food that guests have come to expect at the original Capitol Hill location, the Logan Circle restaurant will feature authentic regional Mexican cuisine.

The menu at the Logan Circle location embraces the unique ingredients and culinary styles of the Yucatan, Puebla, Veracruz, and Baja regions. Offering lunch, dinner and weekend brunch dishes, the menu is highlighted by fresh, house-made tortillas, salsas, guacamole and sauces. Signature dishes include Lomito con Mole Negro Oaxaqueño, an adobo marinated grilled pork tenderloin, Tilapia a la Veracruzana, pan seared tilapia in a rustic lemon caper sauce, and Mama’s Enchiladas, stuffed with pulled chicken Mexicana in a ranchera and tomatillo salsa. Traditional favorites like ceviches, tacos, and fajitas will also be offered.

Building on Tortilla Coast’s tradition of great drinks, the Logan Circle location will serve up an eclectic selection of handcrafted cocktails, and a superb mix of Mexican beers and Spanish and South American wines. Margaritas made to order with fresh juices and organic nectars pair with any one of Tortilla Coast’s 99 tequilas and mezcals. Standouts include prickly pear, available on the rocks or frozen, blood orange or white peach. “Micheladas,” refreshing traditional Mexican beer cocktails, are served two ways: “Chelita,” with Modelo Especial, fresh lime and a salted rim, or “La Sangrita,” with Negro Modelo, house-made sangrita and a salted rim.

The restaurant boasts 152 seats (including 45 in the bar area) and, come spring, will feature a 48 seat patio on 15th Street NW. The décor is vibrant and fun, anchored by a 30 foot mural of Mexican street art collected by local designer Walter Gagliano.

Tortilla Coast Logan Circle will be open for dining Monday-Thursday 11:30am–11 pm, Friday 11:30am–midnight, Saturday 10am- midnight and Sunday 10am-10pm. Brunch on Saturday and Sunday will be served from 10am – 3pm.

Dear PoPville,

I live in Logan and every weekday, I walk by a new restaurant called Tortino on my way home–it’s on 11st St NW, between M and N, on the west side of the street. For the past few months they’ve been getting it ready and it appears to have opened for business in the last week or so, but I can’t find anyone talking about it on the internets. It’s a small, Italian restaurant. Any intel on who is behind it, any info about whether the food is any good, etc?

I stopped in to the new space as yesterday (thanks to all who wrote in) and I was pleasantly surprised. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but once you step inside, you’ll see that they did an amazing job. It’s two spaces combined. And the menu looks great too. You can see it here.

They’ve been open a couple of weeks but will be having their Grand Opening celebration on New Years Eve:

Anyone ever go in a previous year? From an email:

“The 33rd Annual Logan Circle Holiday House Tour will be held Sunday, December 4, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This year’s theme, Restoration & Renewal, reflects the revitalization of the Logan Circle neighborhood and the ongoing improvements that continue to define the community as a premiere place to visit and live.

More than 10 unique properties that represent a mix of historical architecture and modern renovations will be open to the public for a self-guided tour. Relish the architecture, interior design, and art during an afternoon of sights as well as live music and a Wassail Reception with refreshments at the Studio Theatre at 14th and P Streets from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. the day of the event.

“The Logan Circle neighborhood has undergone and continues to undergo tremendous change.” says Dara Duguay, 2011 House Tour Chairperson. “This change has been very positive for the community as homes are being restored and new businesses are opening. As you walk around the neighborhood, you can just feel the vibrancy.”

On the tour is an 1800’s Victorian home that has been restored to its original grandeur by recent owners while adding a striking contemporary touch throughout. Also featured this year is an 1877 home built in Second Empire Style that was remodeled in the 1980s and boasts much of the original interior detail including its wood moldings and a graceful, curved staircase which ascends toward the skylight overhead.

For a more modern feel, tour-goers can visit The Metro on picturesque Church Street. The penthouse features a unique, sun-drenched open living space and views to the East and West. The owners made judicious use of glass furniture to give the room a more open feel, including a glass dining table.

Tickets for the House Tour can be purchased in advance for $25 at the Logan Circle Community Association web site (www.LoganCircle.org) via Eventbrite or on the day of the tour at the Studio Theatre, 14th and P Streets for $30. Pre-sales tickets holders can check-in and start the tour at the Studio Theatre.

Washington Fine Properties is the Platinum sponsor for the 2011 tour. Advance tickets will also be sold at the following locations: Azi’s Café, 1336 9th St.; Axis Salon,1509, Connecticut Ave.; Barrel House Liquor, 1341 14th Street; Logan Hardware, 1416 P Street; and 5th Street Ace Hardware, 1055 5th St.

Logan Circle’s 50 square blocks are rich in history, architecture and a vibrant mixture of residents, art galleries and businesses. Since 1978 the Logan Circle Community Association (LCCA) hosts the annual house tour. The proceeds from which continue the LCCA’s philanthropic and community development efforts throughout the neighborhood. To find out more about LCCA, go to www.LoganCircle.org.”

Earlier in the week we looked at some renderings for a new building coming to the corner of 14th and R St, NW. As a result of that discussion, I was alerted to the fact that the super popular AYT Auto Mechanic will be closing next door. A reader writes:

“This morning I dropped off my car for repairs and talked to the guys about it. Confirmed. I was told the owner will not renew their lease and DC will not zone for an auto repair shop anywhere else in that area. There’s a condo (the Aston or something?) going up right next to the building, and the AYT building will not be torn down but renovated. Was also told there used to be a garage 10-12 years ago on 14th between RI and P or so, and the guy who owns that building now wants $45k a MONTH in rent.

They have a flyer on the counter announcing the closure and that as of January 2 you can visit their two other DC locations. Of course these are not as convenient for someone to drop off a car at 14th & R and then walk downtown. They’re aware of that and say customers have expressed their displeasure about losing that convenience and the overall loss of an auto repair shop in the neighborhood. The other locations will be offering shuttle service to help downtown workers get back and forth though, so that’s something.

I for one am going to miss them. They’ve always treated me right and they’re really nice guys. Shame that 14th St is becoming less a neighborhood and nothing but restaurants, bars, and high end furniture stores. Oh, and condos–you know, full of people who will need services. *sigh*”

I spoke to the folks at AYT on the phone and they said, indeed that Dec. is their last month. The two new locations will be at 620 I (Eye) St, NW and 2121 West Virginia Ave, NE.

In the past we’ve spoken about good mechanics here.

While we admired the new green paint job at Bar Pilar (1833 14th St, NW) a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea they’d be closing soon for the planned renovations into the 2nd floor. The Washington Post shared the word:

“Bar Pilar will close after this Sunday, Nov. 27, to allow construction work to begin on its long-planned second floor restaurant and bar, including the addition of a staircase in what is now the dining room. The closure will be indefinite, depending on how smoothly construction goes. Management hopes to reopen in time for New Year’s Eve.”

They also remind us that Standard (14th and S St, NW) only has 6 more days until they close for the Winter.
