Thanks to a reader for sending this awesomeness. And I say this as a yuppie or maybe a “hipster ho”, I don’t know anymore, it depends on when I’ve last done my laundry. Either way I love this. Sadly by me loving this I fear I may have killed their street cred. Apologies if so! Anyway, some NSFW language. “Abu Rahss x G Wang – Trader Joe’s”

“Dear PoPville,

Thought your readers in the Logan Circle area may be interested in some apparent suspicious dealings involving the 7-Eleven ATM at 14 and Rhode Island NW.

I moved to DC a week or so ago AND have only used my debit card one place in DC – the ATM in 7-eleven at 14 and RI. Yesterday, someone used a cloned copy of my card at a td bank ATM in DC to steal $1100 from my account. Seems highly suspicious to say the least. If you use this ATM, I recommend being extra vigilant and maybe changing your PIN.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if you could do a post regarding police activity on Church St NW last night. I was awakened around 11:30ish last night to what sounded like a man groaning in pain trying to yell help. I couldn’t see exactly where he was/what was going on (my building overlooks the alley behind P and Church St NW with another apartment building blocking my view to Church). When I called 911, the dispatcher told me they’d already gotten calls about it and an ambulance was on its way (it arrived a few minutes after I hung up with dispatch).

Anyway, I’m wondering if anyone else heard it and knows what happened. I hope whoever it was is okay!”

help

“Dear PoPville,

I parked my car on 14th Street in front of the Whitman Walker Clinic (Between Riggs and R Street) yesterday. Between 1:50 and 2pm, while I was moving things from my car, two bags were taken out of my car – one bag was found with most of the belongings strewn about an alley a half block away, obviously all valuables taken, and the other was missing entirely. In that bag was my best friend’s jewelry, mostly of no value other than sentiment. It’s turquoise jewelry that her grandfather made for her mom and grandmother that was passed down to her.

I am certain I locked the car, but there is no sign of forced entry. So maybe I didn’t – and that’s my fault. I’m not sure.

I’m asking for anyone who has any information to please contact me ([email protected]) or if anyone sees unique native american jewelry show up at consignment or pawn shops to please let me know.

If anyone finds a black duffle bag with clothes somewhere in the vicinity of where my car was, that would still be of some consolation to my friend to have those back.

I’m willing to pay anything to get her jewelry back – I’m heart broken, my friend is devastated. It’s not worth much, but the value of sentiment is priceless.”

posto
1515 14th Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know if Posto has shut its doors? It was closed tonight [Sunday] and there was what seemed to be a small makeshift memorial (votive candles, etc.) in front of it. There’s no info on any closing on the website or their voice mail, but according to Open Table, there are no reservations available through March. Any info?”

On Saturday a tipster also emailed:

“Apparently Posto on 14th is closing for good this weekend. Any news?!”

and

“the building had been sold and the restaurant was closing”

Sadly the owner confirmed in an email to me on Saturday:

“Yes today it’s our last shift.”

A bit overshadowed by the new guys – Posto opened in the former Viridian space (which was also an awesome spot) back in January 2009. Posto survived the months (years?) long construction where the sidewalk in front of their restaurant was covered by plywood. The food was great too. RIP. Hope someone keeps the tradition of great restaurants in this spot alive.

cvs p street
1400 block of P Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to see if you or readers have any idea of what goes on in front of the CVS on P Street next to Whole Foods…

There’s always a man there who chants “help me if you can, help me if you can… help me if you can, only if you can… help me if you can, help me if you can… etc”. Oftentimes he’s joined by a group of other people, and they just lounge around. At some point they had a full set up with patio furniture and milk crates set up. I’ve always wondered why CVS hasn’t done anything about it… it’s been going on since I’ve moved to Logan Circle (back in August 2013).

I have one friend who offered to help last year… he asked her if she could buy him a few things at CVS… and she said sure, thinking that he would just get a bag of chips or something. Instead, he came to the register with over $100 worth of Tide detergent, and the friend – not wanting to be awkward – paid for it. I thought the story was funny, and always thought of the group as being pretty innocuous… until last night.

Last night, I was walking down P Street at around 11pm (from Whole Foods). The man is there, and as I approach, begins his standard greeting of “help me if you can young man, help me if you can. It’s cold I need a place to sleep”. I was wearing a Turkish flag tshirt, and he also says “As-Salaam-Alaikum” (standard Muslim Greeting)… and then starts screaming expletives at me about how I’m not a Muslim or a brother and that I shouldn’t be wearing a “Muslim moon”. I continue walking, and a man comes out of the alley adjacent to CVS, and starts following me, asking me why I wasn’t helping that “poor old man” and screaming other expletives at me. Luckily, by the time I got to the Dolcezza corner, there were other people, and he disappeared…

I guess question is, do you know the background behind all of this? It seems like he’s running some sort of an operation – he’s there everyday, and has furniture set up, and has friends who come over. How come CVS hasn’t done anything about it? I’m hoping that the man in the alley wasn’t connected, but it definitely rattled me a bit… especially given that I walk past him multiple times a day.”

Ed. Note: I can’t believe you’re friend paid for the $100 worth of Tide detergent that seems excessive.
