600 Block of H Street, NE

It’s a big day for grocery store news. Back in February of this year we first heard the scuttlebutt about a Whole Foods coming to Street. From a press release:

“Whole Foods Market, in partnership with Insight Property Group and The Lionstone Group, has signed a lease for a new store location at 600 H Street NE in Washington, D.C. This is the second lease signed in two weeks, most recently 800 New Jersey Avenue SE, furthering Whole Foods Market’s commitment to the District.

The H Street store will be approximately 38,000 square feet with a target opening date of late 2016. There are currently four stores in Washington, D.C. and one in development in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood.

Rendering and more info after the jump. (more…)

hit_and_run

“Dear PoPville,

My car was involved in a hit and run this weekend (Friday night) when it was parked in front of my house. Luckily a Good Samaritan witnessed the incident and left me a note with the make, model, color, and 2 variations of spelling of the license plate. I’ve filed a police report and notified my insurance; however, it would be helpful if I had the name and contact info for the Good Samaritan / witness in order to strengthen my claim against the person who hit my car.

The incident occurred in the 1200 block of I St NE, and the car that hit mine was a Cadillac. Can you contact me at finjess06(at)yahoo[dot]com if you witnessed this? Thanks!”

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced that it has approached the final stage of construction of the H Street/Benning Road Streetcar line—and that it anticipates testing of streetcars in the corridor will begin in December. Citizens can expect to see streetcars along H Street/Benning Road during this process, although passenger service will not begin until 2014.

The streetcar system safety work in December will require the integration of power, communications, and traffic signal controls to ensure that all components are safe and working properly. The streetcar system work must perform under several traffic scenarios, and emergency drills will be performed before safety certification can begin by local and federal safety officials. (more…)

10th and H Street, NE

On Monday we noted that the building that was to have been the future home a Ben’s Chili Bowl had been torn down. Today @codykrice tweets:

“Per [ANC] 6A chair, ZA says Ben’s Chili on #HStNE razed bldg w/o permit, approved plans depended on incentives for preserving facade.

May take a while to sort out. New construction would have different reqs than adaptive reuse or facade preservation.”

More big news from Barred in DC:

“The hipster sushi/dance party H Street spot Sticky Rice has been severely punished by the Alcohol Beverage Control Board for ejecting two Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) investigators last New Year’s Eve. The bar cannot serve booze for a 15 day period next month and must pay a $4,000 fine; another 10 days of the liquor license suspension will be served if any violations occur in the next year.”

They report the penalty will be served Nov. 13th-27th. You can see the full ABRA report here – Sticky Rice – 13-CMP-00012 – 10 16 2013
