Disposing of Cooking Oil:

“I’m curious to know the proper procedure for disposing of cooking oil in the District. An anonymous resident in my building periodically leaves a big jug of cooking oil next to the dumpster, which eventually leaks/attracts rodents. I thought it would need to be taken to Ft. Totten Transfer station, but the DC water website says to “Pour all cooking oil and grease from pots and pans into a covered waste grease container and recycle or dispose of in the trash.”(http://www.dcwater.com/wastewater/fats_oils_and_grease_program.cfm)

I’ve tried reaching out to DPW, but no response yet. So can I just throw this gallon jug of oil in the trash? Seems weird.”

Ft. Totten Retail Development:

“Any news on what is happening with the Caffritz “Art Place” property in Ft. Totten? The retail and apartment developments keep getting put on hold. Considering the property is walking distance to three metro lines, I don’t understand the hesitation to build.”

Temporarily removing 100 yr old cast iron radiators:

“I need to paint behind my 100 yr old radiators as well as fix some cracking plaster. Is this something i should attempt on my own or would i be better off getting a plumber?”

Any smell from Fort Totten Transfer Station?

“Greetings all – We are considering buying in the Pleasant Hill area, immediately north of Catholic U and west of Brookland. Some have told us that the smell from the transfer station can get pretty intense, while others have said you’ll never notice it.

Does Popville have any current residents who can share their experiences, good and bad, as near neighbors of the dump? Thanks!”

Ft. Totten Park

From a press release:

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will be joined by D.C. Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie for a walking tour of Fort Totten Park, owned by the National Park Service (NPS), Today, October 4, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. beginning near the Fort Totten Metro Station. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Angel Alston will also join the tour. Norton is visiting the park in response to complaints from D.C. residents about a spike in violent muggings in the park.

“NPS parks have a generally good reputation for safety, but law and order have broken down at Fort Totten Park,” Norton said. “Its dark paths are and should be handy to residents but off limits to criminals. D.C. residents have every right to feel safe in the city’s parks and NPS has an obligation to do what is necessary to make a walk through the park as safe as possible.”
