Toryumon Japanese House coming to 19th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW

Whoa, big news for the long vacant subterranean space previously home to SOHO, Crossroads and Heritage India/Zanzibar – Toryumon Japanese House is coming. A liquor license application says:

“A new Restaurant serving Japanese cuisine. Seating Capacity of 49 and Total Occupancy Load of 66. The Restaurant will not include Entertainment, Dancing or Cover Charge.”

I couldn’t find much info online besides this possibly related logo contest:

“The Toryumon japanese house will be a moderately priced, 100 seats restaurant offering made-to-order, hand-held Sushi, Ramen and poke bowl in delicious Asian and Latin flavor and full bar”

“Took a lot longer than anticipated, but we’re ramping up for the coming farmers market season. We’ll be making ice cream out of the Tastemakers kitchen (although we can’t retail at that location) and hope to have some retail partnerships soon.

In the meantime, we’re offering ice cream by the pint delivered locally over the next few Sundays to kick things off.

“FoBoGro Tries to Clean Up Act, Mend Fences”

“You have become, in some ways, the go-to … for underage,” DC alcohol licensing board member Mike Silverstein told an attorney for FoBoGro (once known as “Foggy Bottom Groceries”, 2140 F Street NW) at an October 2017 hearing.

Selling alcohol to minors (resulting in a three-day suspension of FoBoGro’s liquor license in December 2017 plus a $4,000 fine) was only one of the many problems that Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 2A/Foggy Bottom had with FoBoGro’s application to renew its liquor license. Attendees of the ANC’s regularly-scheduled February 21 meeting heard that the management of the establishment had been very difficult to locate, that patrons had often tossed trash and packaging on the area in front of and beside the store, that noise after 10pm exceeded acceptable levels, and that store patrons and delivery trucks had often double-parked in the dedicated loading zone in front of the store, among other grievances.

Newly-installed ANC2A Chair William K. Smith (Commissioner for district 04) said the ANC “wished to hit the reset button” on the relationship with the store. (more…)

Shooting Near GWU Hospital 7:40pm Tuesday

“At approximately 7:40 pm tonight, MPD responded to the 900 block of 23rd Street, NW to investigate a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was conscious and breathing at reporting time. The suspect is described as a black male, about 30 years old, wearing a black sweater, a vest, and blue jeans, last seen fleeing on foot toward Washington Circle. It is unknown at this time what led to the shooting. The relationship between the suspect and victim is not known. There were no other injuries reported. This incident is currently being investigated by Second District Detectives. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call 202-727-9099.”

Update from MPD:

“Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Second District seek the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a suspect in reference to an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun) offense that occurred in the 900 block of 23rd Street, Northwest, on Wednesday, January 9, 2018.

At approximately 7:40 pm, the suspect and victim were engaged in a verbal altercation at the listed location. During the altercation, the suspect brandished a firearm and began shooting, striking the victim. The suspect fled the scene. The victim received treatment at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was captured by a surveillance camera and can be seen in the photos below:

“The team behind Duke’s Grocery in Dupont Circle and Duke’s Counter in Woodley Park will open a new location at 2000 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Foggy Bottom. The new location will also be named Duke’s Grocery and is slated to open in late 2018.

Fans of the two current Duke’s locations will recognize a robust brunch menu, active bar scene, creative sandwiches and sunny patio. Also featured will be the beloved Proper Burger, consistently rated the District’s Best Burger. At over 4,500 square feet, the new venture will be the largest of the three Duke’s restaurants, which will provide Executive Chef Jillian Catterton space and flexibility for more menu options. Laoban Dumplings opens in Foggy Bottom Today – Check Out the Menu

First Bindaas Indian and now Dumplings. Not bad Foggy Bottom. Not bad at all…

“Former consultant and venture capitalist turned restaurateur, Patrick Coyne, is pleased to announce the opening of his first fast casual dumpling concept, Laoban Dumplings, at 2000 Pennsylvania Ave, NW today, Monday, November 6. The outpost is meant to recreate the authentic and fun dumpling shop experience Coyne enjoyed in the Chinese province of Hunan while teaching English a few years ago.

“I am very excited to open this shop, which I have been envisioning for really long time,” said Coyne. “Dumplings are approachable, beloved, convenient, and comforting. Every culture has a version of them. The combination of dough and filling is something everyone is already familiar with.”

The opening comes after a string of sold-out pop-ups held around Washington, D.C., including stops at Compass Rose where Coyne debuted a khachapuri dumpling – a Gregorian-inspired bite filled with cheese and egg and pan-fried in butter; and On Rye where he featured a Reuben dumpling – a magical combination of the classic American deli sandwich with this Chinese staple. His take on the Lebanese version of a Shish barak dumpling – filled with ground beef, pine nuts, spices and garlic and served with a garlic and mint yogurt dipping sauce – was hailed by Zagat as one of the best versions in the country.
