I feel like this Wed.’s house porn post was a bit of a bust so I wanted to end the week with a good one. Plus this is one of my favorite blocks in the city. I was psyched to get a look inside one of the houses. What’d you think of this one?

It’s yours for $1,749,000.

“Dear PoP,

For the past few days, I’ve walked by this makeshift memorial on a porch on Swann Street in Dupont. Apparently, the owner, Jumbo, died, and a note taped to a plastic chair is on his porch. Since then, people have left flowers and even a newspaper at the memorial to “our beloved Jumbo, the mayor of Swann Street.” I find the note to be very moving, and the flowers and newspaper a real testament to the kindness of Washingtonians. May the mayor rest in peace.”

Back in early March ’11, Banana Leaves was devastated by a fire in north Dupont at 2020 Florida Ave, NW (just east of Connecticut Ave.) You can see the severity of the damage from the fire from these photos. I’m happy to report that a complete gut renovation has begun. There will be an extensive redesign that will take about 6-8 months to complete. I’ll be sure to update as progress is made.

Great news!

Looks like speculation that an H Mart and/or office space may have both been wrong guesses for a replacement tenant for the Secret Safeway in Dupont. Thanks to a reader for sending in word that Mundo Verde PCS has leased space in the building:

“Mundo Verde will be located at 2001 S Street NW in Dupont Circle, conveniently close to the Red Line Metro and numerous bus lines.

Our space was designed for use by early elementary students and includes six large, bright classrooms; a library/lounge; a conference room; bathrooms; and a kitchen that are all on one floor.”

Though, it is not clear if they will be taking the 1st floor retail space because their Web site says:

“Mundo Verde anticipates moving from its incubator space by its second year of operations. In its search, school administrators will prioritize space that is accessible by public transportation and has ample room for outdoor classrooms and a learning garden. The school is currently exploring potential sites in Wards 1, 2, 5 and 6.”

At any rate, the school sounds pretty cool:

“Mundo Verde is the first and only school in the District focusing on Education for Sustainability. The combination of bilingual education and project-based (expeditionary) learning is also unique in the District of Columbia.”

Type Of Financing: Since purchasing in a cooperative is not technically buying real estate, but rather buying a share in a corporation, co-op loans are an animal unto themselves. There are a small hand full of lenders who will do them. Because the financial health of the cooperative is tied together, co-ops often have their own rules regarding a minimum down payment.

Buildings that are cooperatively owned are plentiful in DC, so I think it is useful to take a look at them here from time to time. I had profiled this same building in October 2010 and wrote some information about what makes a co-op different from a condo.

After checking out the new Pinkberry yesterday, I peeked inside the new Shake Shack located directly across Connecticut Ave (technically at the corner of 18th and Jefferson). Anyway, the space is super close to opening and one of the managers I spoke with is anticipating an opening around the week of May 16th. Stay tuned.

DC’s first Pinkberry frozen yogurt is located at 1213 Connecticut Ave, NW in the former Pampillonia Jewelers space south of Lucky Bar in Dupont. To celebrate their opening on Friday – tonight (Thurs. May 5) from 6-10pm they’ll be serving free Pinkberry frozen yogurts to all who stop by.

General Manager Chris Morse

Starting May 6, they’ll be open Sun-Wed 11 AM – 12 AM and Thur-Sat 11 AM – 2 AM.

And for those interested in some future plans – they’ll be opening 2-3 more stores as unique retail spaces become available. Two neighborhoods that they are likely to expand into are Georgetown and Logan Circle.

I was able to check out the Dupont space Wed. afternoon and snap some photos.

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)
