Finally info on the “great new concept” coming to the former One Lounge space which closed January 8th in Dupont (right near the Dupont North metro exit.) Thanks to a reader for sending photos.

Mission’s facebook page says:

“Mission features authentic Mexican cuisine and a lively bar scene in a two level space with an exposed brick interior and Dupont’s largest outdoor patio.”

The door below says Executive Chef Rodrigo Albarran and ‘Coming March 2014’.

From a press release:

“DC area Shake Shack locations are launching a District-exclusive hot dog featuring fried jalapeño pickles from local producer Gordy’s Pickle Jar for ten days only. From March 14 to 23, patrons will be able to try the “Super Fry Frickle” Dog – Shake Shack’s Vienna all-beef hot dogs, topped with crispy-fried Gordy’s Thai Basil Jalapeño pickles, Brooklyn Brewery ShackMeister Ale-marinated shallots, cheddar cheese and American cheese sauce.

“Working with great local producers has always been an important part of the menu at Shake Shack, and we have been excited to work with Gordy’s since opening in DC,” says Mark Rosati, Shake Shack’s culinary director. “We are excited for this collaboration.” Gordy’s Pickle Jar brines fiery jalapeños in a Thai basil-infused brine for a winning combination that is entirely unique. Spicy, briny and cheesy, this dog is one for the ages.

Thanks to jeezpf for sending:

“I work near this and just recently noticed that it has been closed. On further inspection, I noticed the seizure sign on the door. Just wanted to give you a heads up.”

A prime location, it will be interesting to see if stays an Inn or becomes something else. Stay tuned.

Ed. Note: I was going to have a post simply showing all of the statues with people on horseback around town but the contributor who was going to do it had to back out. So then I thought, ‘what the hell’, let’s see who these people are. And here we are.

For Vol. 1 let’s check out General Winfield Scott conveniently located in Scott Circle:

Known as “Old Fuss and Feathers” and the “Grand Old Man of the Army,” he served on active duty as a general longer than any other man in American history, and many historians rate him the best American commander of his time. Over the course of his 53-year career, he commanded forces in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican-American War, the Second Seminole War, and, briefly, the American Civil War, conceiving the Union strategy known as the Anaconda Plan that would be used to defeat the Confederacy. He served as Commanding General of the United States Army for twenty years, longer than any other holder of the office.

A national hero after the Mexican-American War, he served as military governor of Mexico City. Such was his stature that, in 1852, the United States Whig Party passed over its own incumbent President of the United States, Millard Fillmore, to nominate Scott in that year’s United States presidential election. At a height of 6’5″, he remains the tallest man ever nominated by a major party. Scott lost to Democrat Franklin Pierce in the general election, but remained a popular national figure, receiving a brevet promotion in 1856 to the rank of lieutenant general, becoming the first American since George Washington to hold that rank.

This morning we learned that a new Greek restaurant would opening up next door to the new Noodles and Company on 19th Street. Thanks to a reader for sending word that the restaurant is out of NYC and called GRK Fresh Greek. Check out their Menu here.

Their website says:

“From the people who brought you drama, democracy, and alarm clocks, we now present the simple perfection of GRK. Our new take on classic Greek food brings you fresh flavors like you’ve never tasted.”

Earlier this month a reader sent word that Noodles and Company would soon be opening at 19th and L St, NW. They are having an invite only mock service today and open for real tomorrow.

Perhaps of greater interest is news of who is coming to the vacant space next door closest to Science Club – a permit on the door says that it will be a new restaurant, possibly to be called Greek Fresh. The workers also said they heard it would be a Greek restaurant. This is actually a very bold move considering one of DC’s best Greek options, Greek Deli, is located just down the block at 1120 19th St, NW. Updates as the buildout progresses and more info is know.

From Snow Sculpture Contest in Dupont Circle:

“At this point, it looks like Thursday’s wintry mix won’t provide the ideal conditions we need for a snowball fight. So instead, we’ll hold a SNOW SCULPTURE CONTEST!

Simple rules: finish your snowman by 1:30pm, when we plan to start the judging.

Local business reps. are welcome to do the judging and offer rewards to the winners – if you’d like to participate, please get in touch by messaging us through FB!

DC mayoral candidates – you’re welcome to join the judging panel and decide the winner of the best politically-themed sculpture!

And we’ll gladly take deliveries of more snow from other corners of the city, if you can help out with that!”

Back in January we noted little progress at STK Steakhouse coming to the former Casa Nonna space in south Dupont Circle. Thanks to a reader for sending word that they’re now hiring for back of the house positions. In the craigslist ad they say:

“STK artfully blends two concepts into one — the modern steakhouse and a chic lounge. The restaurant’s signature DNA includes plaster cast horns, curvilinear black platform seats and a palette of black gloss and cream. A large central lounge is furnished with creamy leather banquettes and textured crocodile tiles, and is surrounded by an elevated dining room for more formal dining. Theatrical lights illuminate each table, while smoky mirrors allow patrons to catch a glimpse of the surroundings while a DJ creates an energetic vibe throughout the entire space.”

STK has also previously referred to itself as having a “female-friendly mindset”.
