From an email:

“I wanted to alert PoPville about the kickoff of coffee service at Duke’s Grocery.

We are starting things off tomorrow morning at 8:00am with complimentary drip coffee for anyone who comes by!

Our guests have been enjoying coffee, espressos, lattes, cappuccinos and more during lunch, brunch and supper so we figured it was time to start the day with the same premium Italian coffee offerings, along with light breakfast items.

Going forward, coffee service will be offered Tuesday – Friday beginning at 8:00am.”

Yesterday @OConnellPostbiz tweeted:

“This is the most bananas house I think I’ve ever seen in D.C. (and you can rent it!)”

The Airbnb listing says:

“Spectacular, one-of-a-kind house situated in a private alley among the three most desirable neighborhoods in DC: Georgetown, Adams Morgan, and Dupont Circle! Two carriage houses combined to produce incomparable living spaces– approx. 5,220 square feet, which contains a master bedroom suite (on separate floor) with private bathroom and access to rooftop decks. Also, two large bedroom suites each with private bathrooms! Kitchen, dining room, large recreation/billiard room, elevator, mezzanine office/den, lounge, and 2,000 square feet of outdoor space to include a rooftop pool!! The attention of detail and imaginative design is one of a kind!

If you wish the house to be completely empty (without Doug, Haiti (dog), and one in-house staff member), the master suite can be made available based on accommodation expenses of $500 per night , which will be added to the charges.”

In 2011 this was a GDoN House Porn post that was going for $4,995,000. You can still see the virtual tour here.

Thanks to @NanksH for tweeting us:

“Baja Fresh on 19th, south of Dupont, supposedly closed for good last Friday (1/17).”

I called Baja Fresh and they confirmed their Dupont location next to Buffalo billiards (technically located at 1333 New Hampshire Ave, NW) had closed.

From the famous 2010 fight

A reader sends from The First Official DCSFA Snowball Fight of 2014:

“Hey winter sports connoisseurs of DC!

The Washington DC Snowball Fight Association has waited three years for this. A storm that brings enough snow to the District for us to actually have a battle!

At 2pm, we had about 2 inches of snow in Downtown, and the Capital Weather Gang is forecasting more to come. We’d love to see you in our favorite snowball arena, Dupont Circle Park, at 6:30pm!

By then, a few more inches of snow should have accumulated, and the temperatures should not be too low, so the snow can stick together. Just keep in mind that today won’t be anywhere close to the epic Snowmaggedon battle of 2010.

A few things that we’d like to remind everyone who shows up to the showdown!

• Invite your friends!
• Respect law enforcement officers and the media – they didn’t get a day off today.
• The snowball battle might not be the best place for your pets!
• This is meant to be fun! So wear your protective gear, play fair, and follow any instructions given by the Metropolitan Police Department or the U.S. National Park Police.
• Anyone who thinks they’re too cool for school (for example, by pelting moving cars) is responsible for the consequences. Safety is important to us!
• Tweet the hashtag! #DCSFA

See you in the Circle!
– The DCSFA Crew”

Thanks to a reader for sending word:

“Looks like New Orleans Po Boy on 19th near M is closed. Sign on the door says “closing for the holidays Dec. 20”. Not open since.”

Their facebook and twitter pages also haven’t been updated since Dec. 20th. On their Facebook page folks are speculating and wondering what’s going on:

“Are they going to reopen? According to the comment below, it seems they may have closed their doors for good.”

“A waiter at the Irish Whiskey Bar next to Po Boy’s said you may be closing. I told her no way – the food is too good. Tell us its not true!!!”

“When I spoke to Cam, he said they were closing “for the holiday season,” but I certainly could have misinterpreted that. If they’re gone for good, I will be bummed.”

The PoBoy shop opened in Aug. 2012. You can see their menu here.  We judged them here.

Thanks to @melissaeweiss for tweeting us this morning:

“And another north Dupont store closing its doors. It’s Benetton. Surprisingly, G-Star Raw is still open. It’s the third shuttered business on that stretch in the past couple months (first YogiCastle, then Potbelly [across the street]). So sad!”

Anyone remember when this space was a movie theater?

From a press release:

“Russian eatery Mari Vanna will honor the city of Sochi, Russia during the 2014 Winter Olympic games by adding three, traditional Sochi dishes to their menu. On Friday, February 7th from 6 to 9pm, the Dupont hotspot will also kick off the games with an Olympics happy-hour, offering all sports fans a complimentary vodka shot and free bites from a pirozhki tasting station.

Sochi is one of the few cities in Russia that has its own unique, multicultural cuisine, with influences from bordering Georgia. During the 16-days of the Olympics, Washingtonians will enjoy: 1) Shish Kabob ($22), cubes of marinated beef, 2) Solyanka Soup ($11), a spicy soup with cuts of meat and chopped vegetables, and 3) Khachapuri ($21), a traditional Georgian dish of cheese-filled bread.”
