Ceiba is located at 701 14th St, NW. I was able to try this place out for a restaurant week lunch and thought it was really good. (I had the steak.) I’ve heard others say that it was way overrated. What do you guys think – fair, good, great or completely overrated? You can see their dinner menu here.

This has been a tough week for restaurants closing. I’m not sure when but, Singapore bistro recently closed at 1134 19th St, NW. Anyone know when they closed? I had always meant to get to them for a ‘judging restaurants’ post. Were there any fans?

“Dear PoP,

I think it’s high time for the Webster School to get a Horse’s Ass award for the plywood walk through covering the sidewalk for years and years.

You had asked what the plans were for it back in Feb. Supposedly it’s claimed by eminent domain by the secret service next door. If it’s not going to be developed anytime soon I wish they would get rid of the stupid eyesore plywood!”

If you have a building in disrepair that you’d like to nominate for a horse’s ass award, send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com.

“Dear PoP,

Do you know about the Indian restaurant Nirvana? I’m sure you do, since you’ve been in D.C. for a while. Nonetheless, it suddenly closed in July. Initially I was told by one of the owners that they were closing due to renovations. But now, when walking by, it appears the closing is more permanent, as the metal sign is gone and the windows are “boarded up” with a white sticker (now commonly used by buildings that do now want to appear vacant). Do you know if there is any chance one of the best Indian restaurants in town is relocating? Or, do you know what happened, exactly? Did the restaurant’s lease expire?

The address of the restaurant that closed was 1810 K Street, NW. It had the best buffet, in that all of the food was extremely fresh. Also, Nirvana’s buffet featured a different region of India every weekday, something I enjoyed. It will be missed. I’m going to check out the 18th & I express location to see if the new restaurant has a buffet. If not, I guess I will have to find another lunch option. ”

Their Web site says:

“Nirvana will be closing for good as of June 25. We appreciate your business, and hope we see you in our other locations.

From an email:

“I work at a ADC Mapstore on 17th Street exit of the Farragut West Metro Station on the Orange and Blue line. We have been located in DC for about 40 years . We will be closing our doors next week on the Aug 14 forever. Most of our store is 50- 80 percent off.”

I always liked this store (1636 I Street NW). However, I always thought it must be tough for them to make enough sales to pay rent in a downtown spot like this. Very sad to see them go.

Ed. Note: I was graciously offered an extra discount, which I have declined.

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up about – Tomatillo Taqueria. He writes, “serving out of the Big Hunt at 1345 Connecticut Ave, NW I just noticed it! It’s cash only.”

Back in January we took a quick look and folks seemed to dig it. If you work in the area, definitely seems like a good lunch option.

I’m not sure if we’ve spoken about this building before but located on the corner of 11th and K Streets, NW it pains me every time I pass it. Anyone know how long it’s been like this? Do you think this building deserves a horse’s ass award? Do you think the huge advertisement makes it better or worse?

If you have a nomination please send an email and photo to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com.

Funxion is located at 1309 F Street, NW. I’ve been hearing mixed reviews about this downtown spot. For those who have been do you prefer it for the restaurant or the bar? I’ve heard the burgers are pretty good. Any other must order items? You can see their menus here.
