1426 H Street, NW

Woodward Table’s website says:

Jeffrey and Sallie Buben’s Woodward Table, housed in the historic Woodward Building is a concept that exudes a timeless feel with neighborhood charm. Located just one block from The White House, Woodward presents a “table” of dining possibilities with two eateries…the main restaurant with its creative and diverse American menu and Woodward Takeout Food, a sprite artisanal alternative for breakfast and lunch.

Entering the main restaurant through the historic great hall, diners have grand view of the immense thirty-eight foot bar with its stitched leather top and Beaux Art styled tile. Come early for Happy Hour to sit in the rich comfortable booths that line the windows on H Street or gather around the high top pubs that complete the grand bar area, the perfect venue for drinks, dining and people watching.

The exhibition kitchen is highlighted by an impressive hearth oven that seems to command the dining room with intimate booth seating, banquettes and tables. The dining room combines the historic past of the neighborhood and the Woodward Building with contemporary finishes, soft saffron lighting, warm resonant fabrics and touches of copper piping woven throughout the dining room and bar.

The soul of Woodward Table’s cooking involves creating seasonal American cuisine derived from iconic American dishes, a chef’s contemporary approach and a regional repertoire of ingredients. Market inspired flatbreads cooked in the restaurant’s open hearth, slow cooked casseroles, oven roasted vegetables, house made charcuterie, succulent grilled fish, steaks and chops are a sampling of the myriad of menu options. Savor mouth watering desserts created by the pastry chef for a delightful finish to the meal. Our Table is your table.

Woodward Takeout Food aka WTF, adjacent to the restaurant, creates a quick serve American breakfast or lunch for the busy Washingtonian. In the morning, eat in or take out fluffy buttermilk biscuits, flavorful breakfast sandwiches, cinnamon sticky buns or delicious granola followed by the smooth intense flavored estate grown coffee. Specialty soups, fresh market salads and creative sandwiches concocted with house made smoked brisket, cured hams, cider brined turkey, signature pickles and condiments on daily baked bread make for an exciting over-the-top experience, the perfect lunch alternative for a timely meal. Complement everything with old fashioned sodas, specialty lemonade, floats, luscious shakes, not to mention perfect lemon squares, brownies and blondies or a seasonal caramel apple for a sweet treat.

Woodward Takeout Food is like being in a good cook’s kitchen…a venue of sights and sounds with the bakery of the entire restaurant located at one end. Smell the fresh baked bread and other concoctions as you place your orders. Relax and eat!

Young and Hungry’s Jessica Sidman noted the apparently unintentional unfortunate acronym:

City Center Rising Downtown at 9th-11th Street, NW

Last Friday we spoke about the type of retail/restaurants we were looking forward to seeing at the gigantic CityCenter DC project downtown. Last night ANC Rep Rachelle Nigro tweeted a piece of the puzzle:

Del Frisco Steakhouse coming to CityCenter project”

In June Del Frisco’s Grille opened in the long vacant Les Halles space at 1201 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. It’ll be interesting to see if the Del Frisco’s coming to CityCenter will be a proper steakhouse or a Grille. You can see the Steakhouse menus here. You can see the Grille menu here.

City Center Rising Downtown at 9th-11th Street, NW

The huge CityCenter DC development on the site of the former Convention Center has been the subject of much speculation about who may or may not be going into the many available retail spaces. One of the biggest teases we’ve heard was the possibility of an Eataly (market place and restaurants.)

CityCenter DC’s Website says:

“Retail emphasis will focus on a broad range of distinctive restaurants and cafes, grocery/market foods, entertainment and performance venues, fashion and specialty retail, and neighborhood services. Thirty percent of retail space will be devoted to merchants with six or fewer stores in the United States.”

But last week a commenter felt strongly that:

“As for Apple, they probably won’t go to Union Station; however, they are going to City Center… They plan to open a flagship store at the corner of 11th and NY… Watch for this and more official announcements soon (think Top Shop, Uniqlo, etc.)”

So what would you rather see come to CityCenter – more restaurants including something on the scale of an Eataly or more fashion and specialty retail like an Apple store, Uniqlo etc.? In reality do you think this development can/will have a mix of both restaurants and specialty retail?

1121 14th St, NW

Back in April we learned that Chix would be opening a second location downtown at 1121 14th Street, NW just south of Thomas Circle. The original location is located at 11th and U Street, NW.  I recently spoke with the owner who says the new location is progressing nicely and should open up in January.

A recent liquor license application for the space says it will have a seating capacity of 45 and total occupancy of 88.

You can see their menu here.

1028 19th Street, NW

We first heard Boston based Boloco burritos was coming to DC back in Nov. 2011. Now they’re about ready to open. I’m told they should open at 1028 19th St, NW between L and K Streets late this week or early next week. You can see their menu here.

And a nice piece of scuttlebutt as well – I hear they’re finalizing a second space in Georgetown too. Looks like they did a great job on the buildout:

1099 New York Avenue, NW

A couple weeks ago a reader shared a tip and a call to the restaurant indicated that Againn Gastropub would be closing after Nov. 3rd at 1099 New York Avenue, NW. Their General Manager and partner, Romeo Santos, emailed me saying they would not be closing. Their Website now says:

“It is with regret that we announce the closure of AGAINN. After weeks of deliberation with our investors we have decided to close. We want to thank the great city of Washington for its support over the last three years. We have been honored to serve all who have come into AGAINN. We will miss all of the wonderful people in this city! Regretfully, Romeo Santos, General Manager/Partner, AGAINN DC”

I emailed Mr. Santos to confirm that they have closed and this time he did confirm the closure.

Thanks to all who sent emails about the update.
