MPD Shootings in Congress Heights and Georgetown

“Executive Assistant Chief Ashan Benedict provides an update to an off-duty MPD officer involved shooting that occurred 10/20/21 in the 1200 block of 28th St NW.”

From MPD:

“Agents from the Force Investigation Team of the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating an MPD officer involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, in the 1200 block of 28th Street, Northwest.

At approximately 12:17 am, an off-duty MPD officer observed two suspects, both brandishing firearms, while they were conducting an armed robbery at the listed location. The officer engaged the suspects and discharged his weapon, striking one of the suspects. The other suspect then discharged his weapon in the direction of the officer and both suspects then fled the scene. One suspect was later apprehended by responding officers with assistance from the United States Secret Service, Uniformed Division. Officers rendered first aid to the suspect until he was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The other suspect made good his escape.

New Library to be Built at St. Elizabeths East in Congress Heights

“At the groundbreaking for the new Whitman-Walker health care facility, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that the new full-service library in Congress Heights will be built on Parcel 16 on the St. Elizabeths East campus. The library will replace the existing Parklands-Turner Library.

“We look forward to delivering a state-of-the-art Congress Heights Library to replace one of DC’s smallest, yet busiest libraries,” said Mayor Bowser. “The St. Elizabeths East campus is transforming into a parcel of opportunity – a place for Ward 8 residents to work, live, and now learn.”

The new larger library in Congress Heights supports the Library’s Facilities Master Plan that guides the next ten years of planning for library buildings across the city. (more…)

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Friday, July 16, 2021, in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Southeast.

At approximately 11:11 pm, members of the Seventh District were in the area of the listed location when they heard the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, members located a juvenile female, two adult females and two adult males. All sustained gunshot wounds and received treatment at area hospitals. A sixth victim, an adult male, sought treatment at a local hospital for a non-life threatening gunshot wound. After all life-saving efforts failed, the juvenile victim succumbed to their injuries. The adult victims were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The decedent has been identified as 6 year-old Nyiah Courtney, of Southeast. DC. (more…)

with a free Sisterhood Supper – Serving Self Care
On June 19, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Oxon Run Park in Ward 8

In celebration of Juneteenth a group of Ward 7 and 8 organizations and residents are gathering for a Sisterhood Supper. In addition to the Main Dish of Self Care, and healthy side portions of fun, food, and fellowship, women will kick-off a collective challenge to celebrate sisterhood through sharing recipes to collective action and policy change to improve nutrition security and food justice.

COVID-19 has exposed the need to center self-care for the Black community, especially among women juggling motherhood, work, and personal health. “One of the most important parts of our community’s liberation is achieving health equity; particularly in communities that lack the social determinants of health that enable a community to heal itself,” says Mary Blackford, owner of Market 7, an upcoming food hall in Ward 7.

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, in the 1300 Block of Congress Street, Southeast.

At approximately 1:21 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, members located two adult male and two adult female victims suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and transported all four victims to local hospitals for treatment. Moments later, members learned of a fifth victim seeking treatment at a local hospital. DC Fire & EMS reported around 6:30pm last night: “Crash with car into building 1200 block Alabama Ave SE. #DCsBravest on scene with SUV into 3 story apartment building with apparent structural damage. 1 patient inside vehicle not trapped. Building being evacuated.

#DCsBravest believe the luckiest person in DC this evening is the gentleman sitting in this room when an SUV plowed thru the wall. Amazingly, he did not suffer major injuries.” (more…)

MPD Officer Shoots and kills 18 year-old Deon Kay at 3:51pm Wed. in Congress Heights. MPD Release Alleges 18 Year Old had a gun. Protests reported Wed. night and Thurs. morning

The Washington Post reported:

“Two city officials who viewed police body camera video of the incident said at least two officers approached a vehicle in a parking lot and a foot chase began. As one officer ran past the vehicle, the officials said the footage shows Kay pulling a gun from his waist. The officials said the officer fired, appearing to strike Kay in the chest.

City officials said they plan to publicly release the body camera footage as soon as Thursday.

Some people near the shooting scene questioned the police account. On Wednesday night, a few dozen demonstrators, including some of Kay’s family members, converged at the 7th District police station.”

WTOP reported this morning:

“Protesters took to the streets in Washington, D.C., Thursday morning, calling for change in the wake of a teen shot and killed by police Wednesday afternoon in Southeast.

About a dozen protesters gathered outside the mayor’s house chanting “no justice, no peace” with police nearby.”

“Agents from the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, in the 200 block of Orange Street, Southeast.

At approximately 3:51 pm, uniformed patrol officers of the Seventh District responded to the listed location to investigate a man with a gun. Upon arrival, officers encountered individuals in and around a vehicle. Upon seeing the officers, two of the suspects fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, one of the suspects brandished a firearm. In response, an officer discharged their firearm one time, striking the suspect. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the suspect to an area hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries. After all life-saving efforts failed, the suspect was pronounced dead. The other suspect made good their escape and was not apprehended.

The decedent has been identified as 18 year-old Deon Kay, of Southeast, DC. (more…)

New Hospitals Announced for Howard University Hospital on Georgia Avenue NW in Ward 1 and St. Elizabeths East in Ward 8

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced two monumental agreements to improve health care and address inequalities in health outcomes for District residents. The agreements include the construction of two new, state-of-the-art hospitals:

a 136-bed hospital at St. Elizabeths East in Ward 8, operated by Universal Health Services in conjunction with George Washington University and George Washington Medical Faculty Associates (GWMFA); and
a 225-bed Howard University Hospital on Georgia Avenue NW in Ward 1.

Both hospitals will build upon their existing and new networks of care to deliver fully integrated systems of care, offering the best in clinical integration. (more…)

Multiple Shootings including homicides over the Weekend

From Council Member McDuffie’s office: “Shooting in Ivy City: Okie Street NE is blocked off between the 1300 & 1500 block. Multiple victims appear to have non life threatening injuries. We will provide updates as information becomes available.”

“Update: Unfortunately, one of the victims has succumbed to their wounds and has been pronounced dead. We will provide additional updates as MPD makes them available to the public. Anyone with information is asked to call @dcpolicedept at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.”

Update from MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fifth District and Homicide Branch announce an arrest has been made in reference to an Assault with Intent to Commit Robbery that occurred on Sunday, February 23, 2020, in the 1300 block of Okie Street, Northeast.

At approximately 2:22 pm, the suspects, who were in a vehicle, approached the victim at the listed location. The suspects exited the vehicle and approached the victim in an effort to take the victim’s property. One of the suspects brandished a handgun. A struggle ensued in which the victim took the handgun and shot both suspects. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the suspects to an area hospital, where one suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The second suspect was treated for non-life threatening injuries and placed under arrest. A third victim was also treated at a local hospital for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The decedent has been identified as 20 year-old Daniel Jackson, of Southeast, DC.

On Sunday, February 23, 2020, 21 year-old Dominique Davis, of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Robbery. (more…)
