D’Vines located at 3103 14th Street across the street from DC USA has wine tastings every Thursday and Friday from 5:30 – 8 pm. Nice.

They also have a wicked fresh selection of quality beer that I never noticed before:

Anyone check out one of their wine tastings before?

I’ve received a few emails about this but just walked by and spotted this sign. Looks pretty cool:

I’m psyched it’ll have a fountain.

This is what it currently looks like:

“$20K PRICE DROP! WOW! 6 Bed, 3 Bath Semi-Detached home with an unfinished basement. This home was rehabbed at some point and most of the original character remains. Hardwood Floors, Beautiful woodwork, Awesome fireplaces, etc. Great porch for relaxation. Off Street Parking. Currently Tenant Occupied at $3,050/month. Bank Owned. Sold in AS-IS condition. Seller will make no repairs.”

More info and photos found here.

From the photos it looks like this home may be a group house at the moment. But it does seem there are some good bones here. The original asking price was $699,900 but now they are asking $529,900. It has been on the market 149 days. So what do you think of the house itself? Does it have potential? Do you think $529,900 is possible?

Per another reader’s request. A quick look at The Allegro located at 3460 14th Street.

This is what it looked like in August.

Below is what it is project to look like:

Thumbs up or down?

After the jump you can see the progress on the building at Georgia and Taylor (where the YES! Organic Market will located), it’s also coming along quite nicely. (more…)

People are quick to size up others based on their appearance. Most people want to portray a positive message to the world, and clothes and fashion are an important means to accomplishing this. Ed. Note: I now wonder what message I’m conveying to the world… Whether at work, out with friends or just walking around, everyone is taking some notice of your outfit.

For this Recessionista Guide, I have some tips on improving your wardrobe while minimizing spending.

  1. Clean out your closet – Donate. Go through the clothes, shoes and accessories you currently have and determine what you actually wear and like. For the items you no longer want, donate them. Bread for the City (on 7th and P in Shaw) and Martha’s Table (on 14th between V and W) are convenient places to go. Now you have more room in your closet and a tax deduction. Make sure you get a receipt for your donation.

  2. Clean out your closet Revive. Next, for the clothes and shoes you still like, but have seen better days, revive them. Take your battered shoes to a shoe repair place. I took about 8 pairs of shoes to George’s Shoe Repair (16th and U), and for about $120, they all have a new life. That is a lot cheaper than replacing all of them. Also, take a visit to the tailor. If your clothes are too big or small, get them sized so they fit your properly. I took a few dresses to Mt. Pleasant Cleaners – I got 2 hemmed and 1 tailored – and avoided replacing them all.  Continues after the jump. (more…)

A mere couple of months ago PoP spotted a pretty weak looking park at 14th and Girard St. Then just a couple of weeks later he got word that the park was getting a facelift, and this past Monday I attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the brand new Girard Street Park play surface area. If only everything in the District happened this fast!

Back in August the park was pretty sad looking (http://www.princeofpetworth.com/?p=3652) so this is definitely a HUGE improvement. Mayor Fenty, Ward 1 councilmember Jim Graham, and DC Department of Parks and Recreation Director Clark Ray were all there for the big event, as the largest rubber playing surface in the entire District of Columbia was opened to the public.

The park is also home to some basketball courts and a community garden run by a program called CityBlossoms. I got to meet Executive Director Rebecca Lemos who explained to me that the garden is tended to by children from some local community programs, including Centronia, Community of Hope and the Columbia Heights Youth Organization. Right now there are some “winter crops” growing, including some yummy looking cauliflower!

The park looks great now, and I really hope it stays that way. I live right around the corner and have seen some pretty shady activity going on over there. But it’s my hope, along with most of the community I’m sure, that people respect this great new space and try to keep it safe and clean for the children of Columbia Heights!

This condo is located at 1457 Park Road, NW.

“LOCATION!!!!!This is a good opportunity to invest in DC, One and a half blocks from Columbia Heights metro station, DC USA Mall is on the corner, Stores: like Target, Best Buy, Banks, Tivoli Square, Restorants and many more. Building is under Capital improvements throughout common areas.”

You can find more info but no photos here.

There are actually two units going for the same price in this building #204 and #509. Both are studio apartments and both have been reduced $10k. Do you think $159,900 is a reasonable price?

You can see the profile I did on this gallery back in March here. Word of the gallery moving spread last week.

Their Web site says:

“The Nevin Kelly Gallery takes a fresh look at contemporary art. It is our pledge to be a different kind of art gallery–from our warm and inviting environment to our focus on works of high technical, cultural and academic merit. Because of the owner’s extensive travels to Poland and elsewhere in Central Europe, the gallery has numerous works from top young artists in that region.”

The new location is 1400 Irving Street, NW, #132 in the Highland Park apartment building. I think this is great news for Columbia Heights. Do you think Columbia Heights will support a gallery like this?
