Sadly, the city has not yet responded to my queries about this incident. Perhaps it is because it is an ongoing investigation. I’ll be sure to update when they do respond. I received the following email late this morning from a reader:

“I can confirm that there was some sort of incident at Meridian Hill Park early Sunday morning. My friend, who was last seen by other friends at 12:30am Sunday morning getting into a cab in Dupont to go home, was found in very bad shape (head and neck trauma, blood loss) at MHP at 4:30am. I’m hesitant to reveal any more details because (a) at this point everything I know is second hand — a mutual friend of ours told me all of this, and (b) there is a police investigation right now and I don’t want to compromise it.”

UPDATE Please see an update here. No crime according to MPD.

“Dear PoP,

Have you heard anything about why the fountains are drained at the bottom of meridian hill park?”

This is very odd. I thought they didn’t drain the fountains until October or November. But I saw some piping so maybe they’re just fixing it.

And sadly it seems there is more bad news to report. I received three emails saying that there was police tape around the park Sunday morning. Of course there was just a stabbing at the park July 25th. DCist received a tip that blood was seen. The emails I received only said that there was police tape seen. So I’ve sent out queries to try and find out what happened. I’ll update as soon as I get the word.

UPDATE No crime according to MPD. Please see update here.

Thanks to the readers for sending. For the photo above:

“Witnessing a whole slew of firemen/fire trucks outside a smoking rowhouse on 1118 Columbia.” I’m also hearing that the road has been closed for a while.

A description of the above photo:

“No wind, no nothing, this tree outside my apartment at 1800 Clydesdale just decided to fall over at about 11:30 tonight. Nobody was anywhere near it, but it managed to total a Mercedes and scratch a few other cars. It was on the Ontario condo building’s property and wasn’t dead or otherwise in obvious need of removal, but they just cut down about four or five in front of my place so maybe it was mourning its fallen comrades.”

Forgive me if the following post is not terribly coherent but I am weeping tears of joy as I write this. Plus I’ve had a few glasses of wine… Le Jour de Gloire est arrive. The glorious day has arrived. Or it will arrive Monday, August 10th. As first reported here July 20th the new wine bar, Room 11 is set to open on Monday and had a sneak preview tonight that I was fortunate enough to attend.

It is hard to believe given all the build up but it exceeded my expectations. The place looks fantastic.

Both inside:

And outside:

What is hard to explain is how good the vibe feels. It is simply a very comfortable place. Of course it doesn’t hurt that the wine, food, and proprietors are fantastic! Dan Searing (pictured in the first photo) is one of the nicest people in town and those who remember him from Temperance Hall will surely appreciate his presence here. His famous Punch Club will be continuing on a weekly basis in the near future. In the kitchen is an Aussie, fellow owner and super nice guy, Ben, who will cook up some paninis and eventually some Asian themed food to include possibly Thai Beef Salad, Vietnamese Chicken Salad, Summer Rolls and more.

One of the most delicious things I tasted besides the cheese and prosciutto were the goat cheese cake balls by Paisley Fig:

Room 11 located at the corner of 11th and Lamont Streets, NW is filling a gap for the neighborhood. One of the investors told me, “there is definitely something for everyone, nothing is ordinary. You can find things here that you won’t find anywhere else.” And you’ll also find super nice folks with a super mellow/comfortable vibe. And that’s why I think this place is going to be super successful. Be sure to check them out on Monday. Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

The Peruvian Chicken & Steak spot located on Park Road just west of 14th Street, NW looks very close to opening. I peeked in the window last weekend and it looks like it could be ready to roll any day now:

I’m eager to check out the Peruvian steak, I’ve had Peruvian chicken before which I think is delicious so I’m super intrigued by the idea of Peruvian steak. Has anyone had Peruvian style steak before? What exactly makes it Peruvian, the seasoning?

This home is located at 2812 13th Street, NW:

The flier says:

“Row House with large 3bedroom 2 bath 3 floor owners unit with industrial 10 burner stove and 2 decks. Plus a large first floor rental unit that was recently updated. Large unfinished basement with lots of storage runs length of the house. Each unit is separately metered with separate laundry for each. New development and metro around the corner on 14th GREAT LOCATION”

More info and photos found here.

This is one of those houses that I often walk by and admire. I think the home itself is pretty killer. My only hesitation is that it sits right next to some sort of community center. Not that I have anything against community centers, actually I’d have the same hesitation if sat next to a school as well. Not that I have anything against schools… But seriously, the home is pretty sweet – do you think $789,000 is realistic?

In the Post today there is a story titled, “The Target Of Their Ambivalence – Suburban-Retail Icon Seduces Hipsters Of Columbia Heights”. It starts:

“For the hipsters, post-hipsters or quasi-hipsters who moved into Columbia Heights several years ago for the grit and the cheap rent and the proximity to the Wonderland Ballroom (the hipster, post-hipster or quasi-hipster bar that sponsors local music and nights like “Sundress Fest”), life can be divided into two discrete phases: Before Target. After Target.”

Please read the rest of the article here. Let me know what you think. My reaction is a mixture of nausea, sadness and a slight smile. But I really think sometimes a Target is just a Target…

I’m hearing that a car crashed at the corner of 13th and Euclid Streets, NW Saturday night around 8-10pm. Apparently the guy who crashed the car fled the scene and a helicopter was deployed in the search. The damage seems to be limited to a broken fence/wall and a light post that was knocked over. It must have been quite the scene though because when I was walking up 13th Street Sunday afternoon I heard two separate groups of people talking about it. So if you heard a lot sirens and saw the helicopter spotlight this was likely the cause. If anyone got a picture of the crash please send my way and I’ll update this post.

Since 2006, people have been asking me how they will know when the real estate market in DC has hit bottom. The only good answer to that question is that you’ll know once we start coming up on the other side. In other words, you will have missed it. There have started to be some consistently positive numbers reported about housing in general lately, and I’m seeing good things personally in my business and that of my colleagues. I recently had a listing go under contract in one day (on Fourth of July weekend no less). Continues after the jump. (more…)

I’ve recently become a fan of these green gardens. This one is on 13th Street, NW in Columbia Heights. This yard also had an interesting sign, anyone have a rain barrel?
