I hadn’t checked in on the new Pho place, Nam Viet, coming to 3515 14th Street, NW so I thought we were do for an update. They were finishing up work for the evening when I walked by Wed. evening. While they were originally looking for an October opening they now believe it is going to be closer to the mid or end of November. But a lot of progress has been made on the inside. It looks like it’s going to be a rather small space but could be a great spot for pickup/delivery. Stay tuned for more in November.

This topic came up in our discussion of the IHOP. So I’m happy to share the results with CM Graham and see what can be done if there is significant support. For the record, I’m Jewish as well and think it would be a nice touch. I’d say it should only be up for a month though – say Dec. 15th – Jan.15th? Or something like that?

When I first broke the news, in April, that IHOP was considering coming to DC USA in Columbia Heights there was a huge reaction – mostly positive. As I’ve received numerous inquiries from readers about the status – this should be some welcome news. A reader writes:

“I went to the Pleasant Plains Civic Association meeting this past Saturday, where the association’s president announced that IHOP signed something (letter of intent or lease or something) that ensures they’re coming to DCUSA!”

Oh yeah! And I’ve got more good news coming later this week…

“Justice Park” is coming soon to Euclid Street, NW just west of 14th Street. It is a pretty decent sized lot so it’s nice to see another park on the way.

Last week a reader sent in a photo of Tynan’s new sign for the spot on Irving Street in the Highland Park complex. I’m told that Tynan will open up Friday or Saturday of next week.

I’ve also been told that Tynan has an official spot in the Park Place complex above the Petworth Metro. They will take over the northern most retail space and will have outdoor seating. I’ll update news on that space as build out occurs.

Oh yeah, back to Columbia Heights. For those anticipating Chipotle’s opening on 14th Street – I’m hearing early December!

Yesterday when I mentioned Room 11 (11th and Lamont Streets, NW) was having a gin tasting and Punch Club was set to return, a reader mentioned hearing a rumor of an expansion. Well, obviously I had to get a taste of gin and while I was there I asked if the rumors of an expansion were true. And they are! However, it is only in the very very very early stages and nothing has been finalized. The space where they would expand is currently occupied by Jeans N Things. This makes a lot of sense as I don’t think I’ve ever seen a patron inside Jeans N Things.  Hopefully the negotiations will go well as Room 11 could definitely use some more room.

We’ve been having lots of discussions on Elwood Thompson’s lately. Looks like things are moving along nicely. Here’s another positive development, from an email:

“Dear Friends:

I am glad to report that yesterday I introduced and the Council passed legislation to help an organic market to locate in the DCUSA retail center . This bill will ensure that Ellwood Thompson’s — a full-service, organic, natural and sustainable food store — will receive tax relief benefits that are available to every qualified supermarket in DC.

Ellwood Thompson’s is dedicated to high-quality products, supporting local farmers and the community. It signed a lease with DC USA Operating Co., LLC for space in the DC USA Shopping Center in Ward 1. The construction of their supermarket space was delayed due to the downturn in the economy. The is the second time the council passed this bill. The earlier measure was about to expire, and so this action was necessary. the legal action pertained to the fact that–unlike many supermarkets–this one is not free standing and is part of, and within, an existing development. So some technical changes were needed.

I am told that the plans for this supermarket are again underway. Our latest report is that Ellwood Thompson’s has submitted construction diagrams to the developer and they are awaiting approval.

With the passage of this bill, the Council is again doing all it can to make this happen.

Bests, Councilmember Jim Graham”
