“Dear PoP,

I run an adult coed soccer league in DC called District Sports. I have gotten permission to use the new field at Tubman elementary to run a league and was hoping you might be able to give us a shout out on PoP. Games will be on Sunday afternoons and registration is currently open at https://www.districtsports.com/register.asp.”

Nice. For those that are interested, be warned I may participate in this league…

A reader sent in the photo above from 15th and Irving taken in Feb. 2004. It’s now Capitol City Charter School and looks great:

These photos always boggle my mind. Feb. 2004 was not that long ago. I really do appreciate all the positive change that has occurred. Sadly, sometimes it’s easy to forget.

Los Hermanos is located at 1430 Park Road, NW. I had never noticed this spot before either but it’s not a new restaurant simply a new sign. I walked inside and was surprised how big the space is. Very deceiving from the outside. It’s a great space that smelled delicious. The folks were really friendly and there was a heated game of dominoes going on. All around a great vibe. So how’s the food!?!?

Lots of emails about this incident. Here’s the most descriptive with the subject line – “10 cruisers, 2 EMS, 2 fire engines on 3600 block of 13th St”:

“No idea what went on around 8pm tonight, but it got a lot of attention from emergency services. Sirens galore. They shut down 13th street between Otis and Spring. At Otis and 13th, cops from about 5 cruisers were interviewing witnesses. At Spring and 13th, the paramedics loaded one individual into an ambulance on a stretcher. Two cars looked to be involved in the collision.”

It’s not clear whether there was a chase involve or if it was just a terrible accident. I’ll see what I can find out from MPD tomorrow. If anyone else knows more about this incident please leave info the comments.

Thanks to a reader for sending in this great shot from Columbia Heights:

“Having the best spot for a morning coffee is one thing, but making the best of it is another thing altogether. We take tea on our empty rooftop and love it all the same.”

This home is located at 1211 Otis Place, NW:

The flier says:

“Nicely renovated 3 Bedroom, 1 ba home with 1 BR, 1 BA rental unit(currently mo to mo $1068)in Columbia Heights. Nice open floor plan with chefs kitchen, stainless steel appliances and grantite countertops. Brick patio and garden, parking possible. Short walk to Comunbia Height metro, shops and cafes.”

More info found here and a virtual tour found here.

I’m a big fan of this location and actually do like the painted brick. My only concern is that in the virtual tour that doesn’t seem to be many photos of windows. What do you guys think of the house itself? Keeping in mind that there is a rental unit does $479,000 sound reasonable?

Rick Hood follows up on the original discussion of Elwood Thompson’s financing possibilities.

“Lots of creative ideas. The CH community is so educated and engaged. Anonymous – your idea regarding the no interest loan w/ 5% back on groceries (need to study what is fair for both here) to attract the $1000- 5000 loans sounds interesting. Would others be interested in such an idea? I will brainstorm on this (and the other ideas) tomorrow w/ our core staff.”

Sounds like a cool idea. I’m also curious how many folks would be interested in a solution like this?

The flier says:

“You can expect A gem of a house waiting to be renovated! 6bdrms/4bths, 2homes now into 1, Grand proportions, finished basement/au pair suites, multi car prkng, 2 decks, Original detailing thru-out, Hardwoods, sky-lit stairwell, back yard & more. A designers dream in the heart of Columbia Heights. Currently tenanted, but notified. Bring your investors!”

You can find more info here but sadly no inside photos.

I think I once featured this property as house of the day. I think it looks awesome from the outside but had no idea the inside was a fixer upper. I’m always curious how much houses like this are going for. I think the location is pretty ideal but does $875,000 sound reasonable for a fixer upper?

I gave a sneak peek of Thai Tanic II last week which is located at 3462 14th Street, NW in the retail space of the Allegro apartments. At the time they were hoping to open up last weekend but a bit of delay has pushed the grand opening to Friday, October 2nd. Today! Lots of folks have been sending follow up emails inquiring when the official opening will be. So this is great news! I have to say, I walked by Thursday evening and if you can imagine it looks 100 times better than the sneak peek photos I posted.

Rick Hood, owner of Elwood Thompson’s, commented on our recent discussion of Elwood Thompson’s delay in coming to Columbia Heights. Based on the IP address I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of this comment:

“I’m the owner of ET’s and reading all these neighborhood comments. I want to confirm that we’re still in love w/ Columbia Hts and trying to work it out w/ DCUSA. In fact the developer has been to see us in Richmond and is really stretching. We love the diversity of CH and the desire of the community to have a gathering spot for those interested in health, social and environmental consciousnesss around food. Although DCUSA is full of national big boxes, we were attracted to the old facade and feel like we can be the catalyst to more local stores. I think that the education and income levels are growing and the small household size is ideal for us. And Mr T in DC is right, there’s more of our customer type here than Richmond or any other place we’ve studied. Our 15,000sf concept is full service w/ a focus on prepared foods, produce, cheese and meat/seafood. The plan was to include large mural paintings and a long community table that would feel very much like a food co-op -the DCUSA space is perfect. W/ the recession the projected sales have dropped impacting the rent that we can pay and our financing levels. I’m personally very motivated to be here – we really fairly close if we could get a little further help.”

So how do you think we as a community can help facilitate further help?
