This sounds awesome:

“Who: CHARTS (Columbia Heights Arts Foundation) is a budding organization serves to unite the different communities that live in Columbia Heights through the medium of art — by extending outreach to all corners of the neighborhood for constructing dialogue on the arts, cultivating talent through community-based art projects, and allowing outlets of expression that are universal in their audience.

What: Join hundreds of your friends and neighbors for an evening of fine arts presented by local artists, musicians, poets, and actors — it’s the inaugural event for the Columbia Heights Salon Series, powered by the new Columbia Heights Arts Foundation (CHARTS).

Back in the Victorian era, salons were the gathering places for people of high society to mix, mingle, and mull over topics of discussion like politics, as well as come together for the arts. CHARTS is bringing that concept to Columbia Heights once a season, beginning this January, by having four “salons” to visit (allowing roughly 30 minutes per house), where people can peruse the neighborhood and experience different thematic elements of art in a relaxed social setting — and allow them the opportunity to meet their very creative neighbors.

When: Saturday, May 22nd 6:00-10:00 pm

Powered by CHARTS (the Columbia Heights Arts Foundation), here are the four Salons, all within the same one-block radius. Feel free to join each one at your leisure:

Descriptions and locations after the jump. (more…)

Does $2800 sound reasonable for this 2 bed/2 bath?

The flier says:

“Gorgeous renovation just steps to the METRO in HOT Columbia Heights/Park View area! 4/3/1 including a complete finished lower-level in-law suite/English bsmt for potential rental income! 2-Car Pkg! Beautiful finishes throughout, open floor plan-Great for entertaining! Exposed brick, custom built-ins, gas fireplace, covered front porch, skylights & spacious luxury master bath!”

You can find more info here and a virtual tour here.

So what do you think of the renovation? Personally I’m a huge fan of this location – sorta halfway between the Petworth metro and all the new development restaurants on 11th St in Columbia Heights. Does $580,000 sound reasonable given the basement rental income?

The Craigslist ad says:

“Beautiful, one bedroom, one bathroom, English basement apartment with separate entrance in Columbia Heights neighborhood of DC. The apartment has lots of room (500 square feet) and light (five windows and good interior lighting). Walk to Target, Best Buy, Washington Sports Club, restaurants. Metro and bus lines nearby. Central AC, Washer/Dryer in unit. No pets. $995/mo plus electric. One year minimum lease. Security deposit of one month rent. Street parking available. Walk score of 85 out of 100”

This looks like another nice under $1000 option. Do you think $995 sounds reasonable for this 1 bed?

The row house above has a ton of great coffee/mojito spots.

And the pop up/new construction on Kenyon just east of 11th is starting to really take shape but it is interesting that there is a bit of a gap between it and the building on the right.

Thanks to all who sent emails (sorry I didn’t get back to everyone I was at a wedding out of town). But ever since we last discussed IHOP coming to Columbia Heights in the DCUSA, I’ve been getting regular emails from folks asking if it was still happening. Last week a simple tweet from @dcjobscouncil said:

“New IHOP coming to Columbia Heights _ with 110 new jobs.”

And with that we can continue the celebration or the mourning period depending on your perspective. I see an IHOP coming to Columbia Heights kinda like the establishment of the State of Israel, some people (the Jews) celebrate independence day and some people (the Palestinians) call the same day the Nakba, the catastrophe.

Will you celebrate or weep?

Back in March we heard that this building was finally going to be sold.

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up:

“come monday that corner will be opening a new
chapter!!! wooooo hoooooo!”

Whether or not the whole building is getting demolished or just some demolition on the inside, I agree with the reader – it is phenomenal news that this corner will finally see some positive development.

“Dear PoP,

Thought this was interesting. It was a GDoN rental option a couple weeks back and some people had interesting things to say about the building. Wonder what those other buildings were that got auctioned off. This building — I think — could be turned into high end condos.”

The building (above) at 3435 Holmead Place, NW is going for $5,976,600.

I also noticed that 1430 W St, NW (pictured above) is also being auctioned off for $3,221,275.

The listing says:

“Started out perfectly by raising the ceiling, this two bedroom apartment mixes modern updates in the kitchens and baths along with classic hardwood floors and exposed brick along the entire hallway!

The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, disposal, stainless steel appliances, granite counters, gas oven and range, brand new double door fridge and counter island to create a space a chef would envy.

Two full bathrooms are also remodeled with great tile accents and crisp lighting.

Along with the exposed brick walls is a fresh paint job, new energy efficient doors and windows throughout, and a working gas fireplace.

If that was not enough, this unit includes W/D in unit, one DEDICATED parking spot and a brand new 46″ PLASMA TV!!”

Does $2,350 sound reasonable for this 2 bed/2bath?
