The Craigslist ad says:

“Our Spectacular TWO Bedroom, ONE Bathroom Penthouse Condo (Master ~ 15’x13’ w/ 2 closets & Elfa Wall System; Second BR ~ 12’x11’ w/ French doors, closet, and large window) features contemporary architecture set in a classic Federal Style building. This completely updated luxury unit also features a PRIVATE ROOF TERRACE with amazing views from the Washington Monument to the Washington Cathedral, and onward toward Silver Spring. I was sold on private roof terrace… Does $2695 sound realistic for this 2 bedroom?

“Dear PoP,

I was having dinner at Thai Tanic Tues. night in Columbia Heights and ironically enough talking about a friend that got mugged on 17th and R and how odd it was in that area which is considered “safe” when I see a guy on the street casually walking by the brick wall there at Allegro and he leans over the wall and casually picks up a girls purse off the table and just strolls on down the sidewalk like nothing happened. At first it did not register that he was actually stealing her purse, then she yelled at him and it kicked in that this is actually a theft going on in front of me. Long story short several people started chasing the guy down, and out of nowhere two of DC’s finest came running up behind us and helped run the guy down. They were in plain clothes but had their badges, they said they were on a bus going by and saw us chasing somebody so they had the bus stop and let them off. Had they not done that he would have gotten away with it. I know we give DC’s cops hell quite often, and to be honest there are some slack moments in the service : ) but you know what, sometimes they shine too. I have had several conversations directly with the Police Chief this week via her personal posted email and she has been quick to respond and quick to help, as busy as she must be at her level. I want to be sure to take the chance to say, MPD, for all the good apples you have, thank you for your service, you are appreciated. This week you have restored my faith.”

On top of the heroism of MTPD this was a great week for law enforcement!

“Dear PoP,

I just returned home from an appointment this morning and noticed a road crew on my block that had just broken up and removed the three speed humps that were installed less than a week and a half ago. I asked them about it and they said someone on the block didn’t want them there. I can only assume that person has some sort of power that I do not. This is a residential street that is home to children, dogs, seniors and some folks that use wheelchairs, and is also next to Cardozo High School. Why would someone not want speed humps on our block? My husband and I had already noticed how much quieter the block has been and how much slower people drive. This just doesn’t make sense. What a waste of tax money not to mention the time and energy of the large work crew. Any clue what’s going on?”

Anyone care to speculate? This one stings a bit more given all the budget woes and compromises we’ve been witnessing.

“Dear PoP,

I have noticed a surge in graffiti activity in Columbia Heights over the past few weeks, but one takes a particularly long pause when it happens to your own property. Please see my crude photo documentation of the most recent tag “GA” along Girard between 11th and 14th. How annoying is this? Councilman Graham has been quick to respond. I think it’s fair to say it needs to be removed. How about preventing CH from turning into a late 1970’s NYC subway mural. CH has seen clear and present growth with respect to pride in ownership. The littering must stop, the graffiti must stop!”

“Dear PoP,

I’d like people in the neighborhood to be aware for their own safety as well as help ensure the owners follow the rules:

As most of you know, my dog Luca was attacked by a rottweiler in columbia heights about a month ago. Luca is recovering well, but the dog that attacked her has been declared a dangerous dog and is still living in columbia heights. Despite that the rules for maintaining a dangerous dog are quite strict, it is ultimately up to the owners to follow them and the community to report any violations.

As a dangerous dog, the owners are required to keep the dog inside their house at all times. The dog is not allowed in the front yard nor on walks, even if it is muzzled. The dog is only allowed to leave the house for vet visits or other travel that is approved by the department of health and must be muzzled at all times during travel.

In my communications with the Department of Health, they were not wholeheartedly convinced that the owners would comply with these rules, depsite that they had gone to great lengths to obtain a dangerous dog license. So, as friends and neighbors, i’m asking you to help me spread the word. Attached are two photographs taken of Chloe, the rottweiler, additional information about maintaining a dangerous dog and contact informration for the case officer at the Department of Health. If you happen to see Chloe on a walk or even in her yard, please notify the DOH immediately.

In addition to the fact that this dog attacked with no provocation and was on a leash with its owner at the time, it was also reported to DC Animal Control for attacking a man in the neighborhood a month prior to this incident. The attack occurred during the snowstorm, so the person was wearing lots of layers and a winter jacket. He sustained severe bruising and swelling from the attack, but no serious action was taken at the time because the dog did not break skin. If this had happened during warmer weather, he would have sustained very serious injuries.

Chloe lives at Holmead Pl, NW. This is located on Holmead (between 13th and 14th ST NW) between Otis and Monroe. It is easily identified as the only house on the east side of the block with a chain-link fence.

Again, if you see Chloe in the yard or on a walk, please contact Molly Lunaris at the DOH immediately. Here is her contact info:

About a week ago a reader noticed that construction was slated to begin on the long vacant building at 11th and Monroe. Thanks to a reader for noting the developer’s Web site, Madison Investments:

“1020 Monroe is situated at the corner of Monroe Street and 11th Street NW in the heart of Columbia Heights. Madison investments will begin construction on the building on May 19th 2010. The building will be developed to present 28 luxury 1 & 2 bedroom condos ranging in size from 675 -1100 SF. The building also features approximately 7,500 square feet of retail space divided into 6 units that will be re-designed to present attractive and modern new storefronts. The anticipated construction time for this project is approximately 12 months with anticipated sales beginning in June 2011.”

The flier says:

“Beautifully renovated, 3 level, 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath row house. Brand new, expanded kitchen. Full bath added upstairs. Half bath added on main level. New hardwood floors on main level. Fully finished, newly renovated basement with front and rear entries. Many, many other upgrades! Quiet block, right off 14th, 3 blocks to Columbia Heights restaurants. Walk to Metro!”

You can find more info and photos here.

What do you think of the renovation itself? It’s yours for $569,900. The reader who sent in the request thinks it’ll go for more. What do you guys think it’ll settle at?

“Dear PoP,

While sitting in Columbia Heights coffee the other day, I overheard a food wholesaler mention that a bakery was coming in across the street on 11th street. Have you heard any details about this? A good bakery would be a great addition to one of my favorite streets in DC!”

Perhaps this is the development in the works for 3313 11th St, NW? I know folks have often mentioned the desire for a good local bakery. One would probably do very well in that location or elsewhere on 11th St.

Anyone else hear this rumor?
