The Funky Flea Market was previously located at 6th St NE & Neal NE near Galludet University. Their web site says:

“We will be open at our new location -2500 Sherman Avenue NW between Barry Place and Euclid Street on Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 8am to 5pm.” It also says they will have “collectibles, art, clothing, body products, jewelry, furniture, antiques, household items, hot food and much more”

Anyone ever visit them when they were in NE? I’m looking forward to checking them out June 11th.

From a Columbia Heights Dog Park message:

DOG PARK TO BE CLOSED & LOCKED UP FOR GOOD ……..according to the METRO supervisor in charge of the facility UNLESS, according to him, 1.) park users cease to smoke cigarettes and dump their cigarette butts at the dog park AND 2.) if ALL cigarette butts AREN’T picked up and disposed properly in the trash cans.

I just spoke with him at the dog park. He was there inspecting the space and he was NOT HAPPY AT ALL. He couldn’t have been more clear: ALL METRO FACILITIES ARE SMOKE AND CIGARETTE FREE!! The reason why he came by is because his maintenance workers are complaining of all the butts falling through the large vent and clogging up their machines, vents and other systems, causing them to come back more often then they are supposed to and causing them many headaches.

This is a NON-NEGOTIABLE SITUATION.

This was a big problem last summer as well. I, in particular, am sick and tired of cleaning up after smokers at the park and won’t do it anymore. Afterall, many people gave their time on a Saturday morning about a month ago to clean the park up. And believe me, there was a lot of unpicked up dog waste, as well, and after looking at the mess today I saw (cigarette butts), it is NOT FAIR IN THE LEAST to those who volunteered their time for the place to look as horrible as it does at this very moment near the picnic tables and chairs. It’s also unfair to the overwhelming majority of us who DON’T SMOKE. Lastly, it’s very unfair to the dogs who think the butts are something to chew and play with.

Therefore, in order for the park to remain open, I need one person to step up to the plate and clean this up. PLEASE DON’T REPLY TO THIS and/or COMMENT, just get it done. ACTION is what is needed. If and when you see someone light up in the park, please ask them in a courteous manner to take it outside the fenced in areas of the dog park.

Thank you.

“Dear PoP,

Today I found a letter in my mailbox voicing some concern about the new diner at 11th and Monroe St, NW. Personally, I couldn’t be happier about the proposed diner, but apparently not everyone feels the same way. It appears an anti-diner contingent is organizing. Based on the last post and the showing at the ANC meeting, I’d say the PoP community generally favors this. How do those who support the diner show our hands?”

A sample:

My favorite part is “a capacity of 1/4 of a thousand inside”. Quarter of a thousand? Really? Why not just go full hog and say a tenth of 2,500!!! Or even better a 1/100th of 25,000!!!!!!

But to answer the readers question – I’d say if you support the new diner contact the same people provided:

The Getaway is located at 14th and Meridian Pl, NW in the former Social space ( Dunes art gallery is on the 3rd floor.) They will open tonight at 7pm serving snacks, tomorrow and sunday at 7pm with a limited menu and next week at 5pm with a full menu.

You can check out the menu below:

Getaway-Menu

I look forward to hearing folks’ initial impressions (especially in contrast to Social.) We’ll revisit for a proper judging in a few weeks.

According to a recent liquor license application The Dunes will occupy the 3rd floor of 1400 Meridian Pl, NW and:

The Dunes Fund, LLC is a creative marketing firm, business incubator, and gallery exhibition space that operate much like a think tank for businesses, non-profits and individuals dedicated to promoting the D.C. art community. Each event is an intimate affair, tailored to the specific needs of the client. Events often include, but do not always include the combination of DJ or live music, mixology and food. Food is mostly catered, and my musical accompaniment/entertainment offered is an integral part of the creative product the client is exhibiting.

More info on both The Dunes and an opening date for The Getaway soon.

This condo is located at 1200 Euclid St, NW:

The Web site says:

“Just 4 years young, this boutique, 4-unit building was completely gutted down to the shell in 2007; every appointment and all new systems, including Central AC and heat, were installed.

You have the entire 1st floor of this rowhouse to yourself – this is not an english basement! Upon entering, you are greeted throughout with luxury – 9 foot ceilings, gleaming, hardwood floors, a neutral paint palette and well-placed, recessed lighting.”

You can find more info here and photos here.

$519,000 (Condo fee: $265/mo) sound right for this 2 bed/2.5 bath condo?

From various twitter reports about incident at Columbia Heights metro Tuesday around 5:30pm:

@MrTinDC I saw a cop fall off his Segway leading to taunts and a bunch of teenage girls screaming and shoving.

@acdha Just rode past: 5-6 squad cars + officers on bike on sw corner. a large crowd watching a guy being cuffed

@kenzemack High School Girls getting in a fight and screaming at each other

More info via email (I can be reached at princeofpetworth(at)gmail):

“About the situation at the CH metro tonight that you have been talking about via twitter. The group started fighting in the ally behind the victory heights building on Irving around 5:45ish. Looked to be a bunch of teens beating the crap out of each other. People were all just standing around watching. I went into CVS and informed the cop there and he radioed it in. As I was walking back down Irving the group was coming out of the ally and continuing the fight. I assume the cops showed up shortly after that.”

You can follow @PoPville on twitter here.

A reader sends in the above photo and writes:

“Police Car Chase gone bad 2 police cars collide @ 11/Euclid and end up in yard of the house on the corner”

@dcfireems writes around 9pm:

“Update – MVC – 11th St & Euclid St NW – invovles 2 Police vehicles – EMS evaluating several inj officers”

I hope the officers are ok. More info when it becomes available.

Thanks to a reader for the heads up. This Domino’s, opening in June, is located at 2701 14th St, NW across the street from the Dunkin Donuts. Since the Dunkin Donuts is often crowded I’ve wondered why the retail spaces across the street have been vacant for so long. I’m not saying Domino’s is my first choice but I’m certainly glad that someone is finally moving in. Are there any Domino’s pizza fans?

I know Columbia Heights has great pizza choices with Red Rocks and Pete’s but some people (myself included) have the occasional hankering for some mass produced pizza. At those times I prefer Papa John’s located at 1417 Otis Pl, NW. Anyone prefer Domino’s over Papa John’s?

Chain stores moving into Columbia Heights have not always been well received (despite their popularity with residents – Chipotle, IHOP etc), but given the state of this particular block and how long the retail spaces have been vacant – do you see the arrival of Domino’s (regardless of if you like their pizza) as a good development or a bad development?
