“Dear PoP,

So I live on the 1400 block of Euclid St, NW and have recently seen some construction at a vacant lot very close to my house. Workers are currently putting up a small fence around the lot but there is also a large bulldozer in the lot. I’m wondering if you could shed some light on what is going in there. When we moved in it was rumored that a community garden would be put in there.”

Back in Oct. ’09 we first learned of a new park to be called Justice Park would occupy this plot. In Dec. ’09 we learned that funding had been restored for this park. Then…nothing.

Glad to see construction finally started.

From an email:

Columbia Heights Day is right around the corner on Saturday, August 27. But before we celebrate the fifth year (!) of what we like to think as one of the best community festivals in DC, we hope you can help us get ready for the big day. Last year more than 10,000 people stopped by the festival and 2011 will be better (and bigger) than before.

We still have a few spaces open for vendors (those who are a local business owner, part of a community group or an artist). If you’re interested in having space during the festival let us know at [email protected]. Check our sponsorship form (PDF) for more information or sign-up online on our website.

We are also looking for more volunteers. Columbia Heights Day is an all-volunteer operation and we need a few dozen helping hands the day of the festival. Can you help us set-up, sell T-shirts or face paint in the Kids Zone? Contact Volunteer Coordinator Ania at [email protected] to help out.

Finally, we also have a 5-for-5 campaign in honor of our fifth anniversary. We are encouraging folks to donate $5 online at ColumbiaHeightsDay.org or in-person at the Columbia Heights Community Marketplace on Saturday, August 6.

“Dear PoPville,

I (unfortunately) work out in Tysons Corner. But something awesome happened recently- Fresh Market opened nearby, in Vienna, VA. It’s something akin to a mix between Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, and it’s absolutely awesome. Fresh Market would be an even better fit than that other store that we shall not name that was supposed to open in DCUSA. The fresh produce, meat, fish, and prepared foods are great, and much more affordable than WF. I think Jim Graham and the citizens of Columbia Heights should lobby Fresh Market to see if they’d be willing to locate in DCUSA. Fresh Market seems to be aggressively trying to open more stores in the DC area. Their stores have a smaller footprint than traditional grocery stores, so I think it could work.”

Anyone else familiar with them? Would you guys like to see a Fresh Market at DC USA in Columbia Heights?

“Dear PoPville,

I’m a resident of Adams Morgan and my fiance is a resident in Columbia Heights so were are particularly aware of the crime that takes place in Ward 1. Reading all of the recent posts on the increased criminal activity, shootings, pipe violence, etc has lead me to think of options outside of just complaining on POP and other list serves. I highly doubt the thugs that are doing these atrocities read POP to see how enraged the communities are. Police presence has done little to combat the issue.

Therefore, I think it’s come a time where there needs to be active community presence via a “Operation Take Back the Streets” or “People of Columbia Heights March for Nonviolence” rally or parade up/down 14th street across to Sherman Ave or Georgia Ave or similar layout. This would be a show of visual nonviolent force that the residents are sick and tired of crime/violence in our community.

Could we post to gauge interest or peoples thoughts?”

Today

“Dear PoP,

I live on the 3500 block of 13th Street NW, and I’ve noticed that 3504 13th St NW seems to function as a guesthouse/hotel. On the weekends, there are always families coming and going, and this past week, a number of monks who were in town for the Dalai Lama event were staying there. I’ve looked all over google trying to find out more information on the property, but to no avail. Can you or your readers help me solve this mystery?”

Hmm, looks like it sold for $1,900,000 back on Oct. 30, 2009. Anyone know if they are a hostel/hotel? Maybe some residents are doing airbnb or a similar service that we talked about yesterday?
