“Dear PoP,

I stopped by last night and have got to say I was shocked. Outdoor patio. Downstairs basement bar with TVs (great neighborhood bar feel). Small dance floor on the second floor (something Columbia Heights has been lacking) and a big deck with another bar on the upper level.

I highly recommend you swing by (a great happy hour from 4-8… try the cucumber and basil margarita).”

Zeba opened up at 3423 14th St, NW in late June. Their Web site says:

“Featuring four separate areas – a front patio, a main bar, a dancefloor, and an outdoor deck – Zeba is a perfect place for a happy hour or late-night dancing to the hottest DJs.

Our cocktails are crafted with fresh fruit and house-blended purees and juices. On tap we feature a wide selection of microbrews that will satisfy the most demanding connoisseur. The drinks are complemented by our food menu which is simple but has already gained recognition among the patrons. Chicken kabob is marinated in our special blend of spices and is the best in Columbia Heights. Our pizza is made from scratch using only the freshest ingredients with a wide variety of toppings.

As our weekly events we feature FAB TUESDAYS with HANDEHOCH at the decks and exclusive drink specials, and Serbian Sundays when the hottest people in DC come and get ready for the busy week ahead.”

You can see their menus here.

I’ve been a lot of emails from folks asking about the Panera coming to DCUSA in Columbia Heights. Last week a permit went up so the build-out can begin. They are aiming to open in October. They will be located between IHOP and Panda Express on Irving Street. Updates as construction progresses.

From an email:

“Please join us at Room 11 for our second anniversary celebration Wednesday, August 10! Free Jamaican Punch from 5 to 7 for all and a free glass with purchase after that while supplies last (we’ve got a lot). I’ll be signing my book, the Punch Bowl, we’ll have a limited supply of lovely Room 11 t-shirts by Nick for sale, and Chef Ben is planning some delicious food specials.

Thanks to all who helped make our second year great and thanks to the residents and business people of Columbia Heights for being such great neighbors.
Cheers!

“Dear PoP,

I snapped this picture this morning as a crew was working on taking down a tree. The tree that was being taken down was along the South edge of the current fence. I believe that the plans call for the trees on the West side to remain (which is nice because they are nicely established and provide great shade!). I noticed the fencing go around the park yesterday (I’m not sure when it went up, but I noticed it yesterday). Anyway, I thought you and some of your readers would be happy to know the progress at this park is finally starting!”

Fantastic news!

$1350 sound right for a studio here?

Back in Nov. ’10 we first learned that a new Ethiopian restaurant, Tegeste, would be opening up in Columbia Heights at 3521 14th St, NW in the old Catti Mexican Restaurant space (which had been closed for years.) In Dec. ’10 they had applied for a liquor license and just last month they got a great new sign. Word on the street (and here) had been very positive. Unfortunately on Friday I started to receive numerous emails saying that their sign was gone and a for rent sign had been placed in the front window.

I went to check it out on Saturday and unfortunately it is true the restaurant has been closed. In addition to a for rent sign there is also a small sheet of paper under the for rent sign taped up on the front window. The landlord (presumably it was the landlord) posted a canceled rent check showing that there were insufficient funds in the bank. Seems a bit harsh but I don’t know the whole story. If Tegeste is able to open up in a new space I’ll be sure to update.
