Dear PoPville,
I was walking on the south side of Irving St NW between Sherman and Georgia Ave NW on Tuesday morning at about 7:30am. A black man, who I’d guess to be about 25 years old, stepped out in front of me with his penis exposed and asked me if I “like black d***.” We had both been waiting to cross Sherman at the light and he had run up the street in front of me, clearly planning to expose himself. I figured it was a weird freak thing, but Thursday morning I was in the same place walking home at the same time and he stepped out in front of me from behind a tree with his penis exposed again.
Since he seems to be making this a regular morning thing, I wanted to make sure people in the neighborhood know. Both times I saw him he was wearing black pants and a black jacket. On Tuesday morning he had a black and white head scarf on, but not this morning. I’ve contacted the police. I suggest if anyone else sees him, they do the same. He wasn’t aggressive toward me either time, but who knows what he might do next time.

Dear PoPville,
Just wanted to make you aware of an assault/attempted robbery that occurred last night at 11th and Clifton St, NW around 11:45pm. I heard screaming so I went outside and a woman was on the ground hysterical.
Cops were called and arrived on the scene about 5 min later. Her story was that a man was in the bike lane as she was riding her bike and she slowed down to go around him but he pushed her over and then two guys jumped out of a nearby parked car and began hitting her on the head with an object. She started to scream and the men ran away. They were not successful in stealing any of her stuff. I don’t believe they caught the men.

“String quartet at Columbia Heights farmers market. Such a treat on Saturday AM while buying my veggies!”
The music is one of the things that makes this farmers market one of the best in the city. The market takes place every Saturday May 12 – December 15
9 am to 1 pm at the plaza on 14th St, NW between Kenyon and Park Rd.

14th and Park Rd, NW
Well it’s been a long time coming but Columbia Heights’ Z Burger is getting ready to soft open late next week in the Tivoli at 14th and Park Rd, NW. This is the former Mayorga Coffee spot which closed in Aug. 2008 and Nori sushi which closed in July 2009.
Do you like the way the space turned out?

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

The Wonderland Ballroom is located at 1101 Kenyon St, NW. Love ’em or hate ’em – there is no debate that they have played a huge roll in the renaissance of 11th Street in Columbia Heights. Personally, I love them and wish them many more years of good times. Happy Birthday Wonderland!

Future home of DSW on Irving St, NW west of 14th Street in DC USA
Back in Feb. 2012 we saw where the Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) will be located in the DC USA complex in Columbia Heights. CM Jim Graham sends word of employment opportunities in DC USA and includes the following info:
“Lime Fresh Mexican Grille is hiring for its new restaurant which will open on August 28, 2012 near the DC USA14th Street Atrium at 3100 14th Street, NW. Lime Fresh has more than 50 positions to currently fill.
DSW Shoe Warehouse will be opening at DC USA on or about October 4, 2012.”

I’ve been hearing lots of rumors about the former laundromat next to Red Derby at 14th and Quincy St, NW – pizza place, new bar, coffeehouse, other restaurants. But I haven’t been able to confirm any of them – so who would you like to see take over this space?

Admittedly, I’m a huge fan of Dogfish Head beer. Thaitanic II is located at 3462 14th Street, NW in Columbia Heights. You can see their full menu here.
