3605 14th St, NW

Back in late August we checked on the progress at Mad Momos coming to 3605 14th St, NW. It was looking very promising. Remember when it used to look like this? You can also see the amount of work that was done here. Now the space will make your jaw drop:

Their website says:

mad momos is a restaurant, beer deck and lounge in the heart of Columbia Heights, Washington, DC. We offer New American and crossover cuisine with a focus on hand-crafted momos.

WHAT’S A MOMO?
A momo is a tasty dumpling native to the Himalayan region. Almost all cultures have some variation of a momo – a savory or sweet stuffing wrapped in a sheet of pasta. Our unique artisanal momos are made on premise. We offer a fun, new, “mad” twist on the traditional momo with creative fillings, pasta and our dipping sauces complement each momo meal. Our pasta is made daily from scratch and our meats are all house-ground.

COME ENJOY OUR SPACE
Guests can enjoy a variety of spaces at mad momos. The first level contains a full-service bar and main dining area that extends onto an outdoor terrace with sidewalk seating. The second level features more dining, a charming treetop patio, vaulted ceiling lounge and second bar. Large windows, folding doors and skylights bring in lots of natural light. Exposed brick walls will feature rotating artwork from local artists as well as several green panels created by local permaculturists.

CRAFT BEER ENTHUSIASTS TAKE NOTE
Grab some friends or meet new ones while you enjoy a beer on our rooftop deck with picnic tables. It’s the perfect spot to savor one of 16 thoughtfully selected beers on tap and in bottles. Stop by now to try our winter selections.

Dear PoPville,

Yesterday morning my girlfriend and I discovered her car, parked on Pierce St (corner of 1st ST NE in NoMa, with a busted passenger side window, along with her car, there were at least 3 other cars with busted windows as well. This seems to mostly happen on this street only, so it might be good to warn people about not parking on this street. The police came promptly and even looked for fingerprints.

Dear PoPville,

I live on Sherman Ave (near Lamont) in Columbia Heights and wanted to share something that happened on Saturday night. I was sitting in my house and saw something move out the corner of my eye – I looked up and saw nothing, but a minute later a man leaned over and looked into the window on my back door. I alerted my husband, who got up and we approached the door – the guy leaned in again, saw us, and ducked under the window and took off. We went out on the deck, and saw that he had run a couple houses over in our back alley, then stopped and was watching us. As my husband moved to go down the stairs, the guy took off.

He was wearing a black ski hat and obviously deliberately came all the way down our back alley and up on to our deck – scary thing is, he had to have seen me before I noticed him as I was in direct line of sight from the door, yet that did not seem to deter him from continuing to look into the house.

We notified the police and they did a patrol of the area. Haven’t heard anything since. I still think its generally safe as our neighbors tend to float around out back (for a late night smoke and so on). Just wanted to let more neighbors in the area know so they can be extra alert.

From an email:

The lighting ceremony will be Saturday, December 1st at 6:30pm at the Civic Plaza with students caroling and hot beverages. This year in addition to the tree lighting ceremony our partner, Collaborate to Impact, and several local restaurants are organizing multi-site happy holiday hours to raise funds for three nonprofits serving our area. Tickets for the happy hours can be purchased ahead of time for $20 at participating restaurants, Latin American Youth Center or at CTI’s website. You can also purchase tickets at the ceremony for $25. For more information people can check out facebook.com/chtreelighting or email us at [email protected].

Dear PoPville,

I noticed some activity in the building that use to be the JC Auto and Frame Repairs shop in the alley on Irving St NW. I got the above flyer last night. I think building residential apartments in an alley is crazy.

Public Meeting Notice (PDF)

What do you guys think – could an apartment building in an alley work here?

Dear PoPville,

This morning just before 6am there was a SWAT raid on the row house directly next door to me near 14th and Meridian Pl NW in Columbia Heights. My house mates and I suspected drug dealing was going on at the residence based off all the suspicious comings and goings we have witnessed since we moved in three months ago. We woke up to flash bangs, doors being broken in, and SWAT members apprehending people. Unfortunately, we did not get to see any of the evidence being taken out of the house. While I hope to never have that kind of scary wake up again, props to the cops for their investigation and take down! Anyone else hear or see this?

Trolley Park at 11th and Monroe St, NW

Dear PoPville,

I saw this posting up on the Columbia Heights Yahoo Group. Wondering if anyone else can verify the story. If so, are the ICE/Homeland Security People for real? Sounds like a possible scam to me. Either way, very troubling. We have an Aupair for our two kids with legit visa etc. Anyone questioning her status in public and in the District can f**k off in my opinion. Original posting below.

I’m hopeful you can help put a stop to this harassment that’s occurring at our playgrounds and in our community.

Over the last ~2 mos Homeland Security/ICE have been questioning nannies AT playgrounds in Columbia Heights (Girard St Park 14th / Monroe 11st Park — “Trolley Park”). There are 2 SUVs that sit near the parks, black Escalade /black Suburban (w/4 African American women seated in the SUVs). In some cases the women in the SUVs get out and question the nannies at the park (IN FRONT of children) — and in other cases they FOLLOW the nannies home from the park and question them on the street (also in front of children). They question only the minority nannies — and seem to approach them randomly.

In one case, a woman began questioning a nanny AT the park on Girard St — pretending she was interested in securing nanny employment, asking how this nanny secured her job. The nanny explained to her that she got her job via an agency and earnestly offered to help the woman and provide the agency phone number. Later, as the nanny was leaving the park with the two children she was caring for, the same woman, approached the same nanny and showed her badge indicating she was with Homeland Security and demanded her name, address, and other information.

In another example, a nanny left Trolley Park, an SUV followed her for a few blocks. Then pulled in front of her as she was walking down the street with the stroller– then a woman got out, began calling her ma’am repeatedly trying to get her attention — then asked her how she got her job.

In one case, after questioning a nanny, the nanny was arrested (14th and Girard).

I don’t know the nanny who was arrested but I do know the other two nannies well– and I can say with certainty they were unjustly and randomly harassed.

As a mother, I don’t like how our federal gov’t is enforcing their power in front of our children — and as a community member, I don’t like the fear that’s being instilled in our neighborhood. I don’t like our nannies / members of our community being profiled, followed, and harassed — in front of our young children. WHILE they are working.

Of course, I don’t have context for why this is happening. This seems like another case of the fed gov’t displaying their power in our neighborhood out of convenience — with no real motive or strategy just under the umbrella of the “Secure Communities Act”.

I would like this to stop. What can you do to help?

What can I do as a community member to stop this egregious harassment that’s occurring in front of our children?

This morning MPD wrote to the Columbia Heights listserv:

“The federal agencies contacted for mpd is not doing such stops or operations.”

Has anyone else seen these SUVs?

Keefer and Georgia Ave, NW

On Saturday the Tibet Shop opened at the corner of Keefer and Georgia Ave, NW. This is from the same folks who have a shop in Adams Morgan. The owner is super nice – if you live in the neighborhood – stop in and say hi.
