I’ve gotten an extraordinary number of emails from folks concerned with reports of people getting hit for no reason recently referred to as the “knockout game”. DCist first reported that there were (at least) two victims in Columbia Heights. The story was then picked up by WJLA, CBS Local, NBC Washington and MyFoxDC.

Unfortunately incidents of assaults occurring for no apparent reason are not new (over the years there are sadly too many to link to). Violent assaults, especially when there is no apparent motive, be they financial or otherwise, are horrifying to read about that. I inquired with MPD to see if this was a growing trend and as of last night they reply:

“We are investigating two simple assaults. In these incidents the victims sustained minor injuries and were not knocked out. In one of the incidents, the attack appeared to be unprovoked. In the other, it is not clear at this time, but it is under investigation. As always we urge the public to be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behavior or persons to the police by calling 911. Anyone with information about these assaults is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

I think it is an important reminder be aware of your surroundings. As we’ve discussed hundreds of times there is no way to be 100% immune to violent crime, like this or more traditional muggings, but practicing “street smarts” can help. Whether or not the “knockout game” is actually occurring in DC is not the paramount concern because these types of incidents have always happened in DC as long as I can remember, sadly. Even still, I believe there is a far greater chance of a traditional mugging. What is of greatest concern to me is the overall safety, regardless of the type of threat, of District residents and visitors. So be they muggers, idiot kids, those with serious mental health problems, or just plain psychopaths – be aware. Be alert. Be smart. Don’t hesitate to call 911. But I do think it is important to keep things, as upsetting as they can be to read, in perspective. At this point it seems like there were two assaults in Columbia Heights, that did not seem to have any apparent financial motive. There are however, dozens of serious muggings and/or assaults every week. Not that we need to obsess about getting mugged either.

I’m having a hard time articulating what I want to say – be safe, be smart but I don’t think we need to get hysterical about these most recent cases in and of themselves. I do think we need to continue to demand more from our leaders – a modicum of “safety” on our streets so we are free to walk or bike without fear of assault be it from a “knockout game” or traditional mugging. And we don’t need to run to the hills either.

From the owners of Maple:

“Yes, indeed, as you said, Maple is expanding into the former Columbia Heights Coffee space next door. We’ve lived in the neighborhood for about eight years, and we, too, were sad to see CH coffee leave. They were great neighbors and the nicest people. We are in the beginning stages of planning the expansion, so we don’t have a lot of details yet. Our indoor seating capacity will about double, with seating on the ground floor as well as a second-floor space that can also be used for private events. The increased seating will enable us to take reservations. We will also create an outdoor patio with seating in the backyard. Our kitchen will undergo a much-needed expansion as well. We are looking at a spring opening for the expansion.

Thanks,
Eric Gronning and Lori Robertson”

Back in March we learned Sticky Fingers was applying for a liquor license. Looks like they got it:

Their website says:

“Come out and celebrate the launch of our new boozy drinks menu! THAT’S RIGHT! Boozy drinks at Sticky Fingers! Think mudslides and bourbon vanilla bean milkshakes, creamy-khalua au lait, and of course vegan friendly wines and crafts beers. A portion of all sales will go to Benefit the animals at Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary.”

Also some of the flyers (pictured above) were posted in the former OXXO dry cleaners space next door – perhaps Sticky Fingers is expanding into the space – stay tuned.

UPDATE from owner of Sticky Fingers:

“As of now, we are using the space next door while it is vacant to throw a few fundraisers. There are no plans to take over that space currently.

Here is the drink list:

BOOZY MILKSHAKES
• MUDSLIDE
• VANILLA BEAN BOURBON
• ORANGE RUMMSICLE

BOOZY COFFEE DRINKS

A readers sends word:

“Stopped into the Getaway for brunch on Saturday and was informed that they are closing in two weeks. They said something about how they would be relocating, but didn’t say where.”

I checked with some folks who are in the know who also said they heard The Getaway was closing at the end of the month. An email to the owner was not returned but I’ll update as soon as more info becomes available. Back in May 2011, The Getway opened in the former Social space (and before that Christian bookstore) at the corner of 14th and Meridian Pl, NW. You can see their menus here.

Last month we learned the trailblazing Columbia Heights Coffee had closed on 11th Street. At that time some commenters had heard that next door neighbor Maple would be taking over the space. Turns out it is true. While my feelings about Columbia Heights Coffee have not changed, I am happy to hear that Maple is taking over the space. Maple is delicious and I’m glad I will have a better chance of getting a table. The news is still a bit bittersweet but at the end of the day – this is good news. You can see Maple’s menu here. Looking forward to seeing how the buildout turns out.

14th and Monroe Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

I am writing on behalf of Monroe St NW residents; as I am sure you know, there’s a TGI Friday’s that will be setting up shop very soon at the corner of 14 and Monroe. Ever since we found out about this, the Monroe Street residents Association along with the Kelsey Elder community have been very inquisitive and worried about this type of businesses opening up in a residential street and specially right below a Community of elderly people. We have voiced our concerns to our councilmember Jim Graham and our ANC reps. We have attended multiple meetings and even one with the TGI Friday’s people on Wednesday. We had been working on a settlement agreement with the ANC and filed a formal protest to the ABRA Board. Everything went great until we questioned them on a couple of issues. They saw our settlement agreement and basically rejected any type of compromise on most of it. Their discourse on willing to do anything to be a good neighbor went out the door when we asked for them to amend their closing hours to around midnight. At that point their bullying behavior became apparent and they immediately shut us down without any room for discussion. The fact of the matter is that they have not shown any action or willingness to go out of their way to appease our concerns. (more…)
