Thanks to U Street Buzz for sharing an email with us that he received from Department of Parks and Recreation:

“Thank you for reaching out. Currently DPR does not have the personnel budget to open Cardozo pool. Once City Counsel passes the FY16 budget, we will be in a much better place to make a decision. Please note that we have two pools very close to Cardozo (Dunbar and Marie Reed).”

A couple weeks ago we noted Zombie Coffee looked close to opening in the former Tasti D Lite space next to Panda Express. The new signage reveals another potentially awesome detail – donuts!! If these things are legit this could be huge. Stay tuned for an opening date.

Now they’re hiring too. It’s interesting to note, based on the email address, that there seems to be an affiliation with FroZenYo which we wondered about when we first learned of this project back in December:

With recent closings is the company transitioning a bit from Fro Yo to donuts? We’ll see. In the meantime here’s a peek in the window of the new Columbia Heights spot:

tiny red bike

You may recognize his username from all his great photos seen illustrating tons of PoPville posts. Now we can associate his name with another great thing. An avid cyclist and Columbia Heights resident, Mr T in DC aka Anthony Nigrelli spotted a readers beloved stolen bike that we posted about yesterday afternoon. Last night he spotted it by the Columbia Heights metro and secured his own lock on the bike after positively identifying it. He then emailed the OP and she has it back with her faith restored in humanity. Well done Mr. T – good looking out!

tiny red bike

“Dear PoPville,

My absolutely adorable and beloved bike – which is worth almost no money and is useless to anyone over about 4’10” – was stolen right out of my apartment in Columbia Heights recently. It is a tiny red antique Raleigh one-speed with a bright white seat. It dates from around the early 60s and is very distinctive-looking.

I am heartbroken to lose it – it was truly my most beloved possession, and it’s completely irreplaceable! And it is so frustrating, because the thief almost certainly can’t use it and won’t make significant money from it. It’s also super creepy that someone came into my apartment to grab it.

If you see it anywhere, pretty please contact me at rkukla(at)gmail.com, and ideally slap a lock on it.”

Ed. Note: Be sure to check to see what MPD has recovered as well if you’ve had a bike (or phone/tablet) stolen.

Random recollection – the future Allegro in 2007:

allegro_14th_st_2007

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking home around midnight last night, headed south on the west side of 14th Street, in the northern part of Columbia Heights. On the block between Oak and Meridian, a bike whizzed by me, and the guy snatched my phone right out of my hands, and veered down Meridian Place. I didn’t get a good look at the guy or his bike, unfortunately. I’m hoping that the police can get footage from nearby cameras. I know I should have been more careful and not had my cellphone out while walking. I’ve lived in Columbia Heights since 2003, and this is the first time something of this nature has happened to me.”
