Pesto was located at 2915 Connecticut Ave, NW right near the National Zoo. We judged it here. I’ve always thought this location had lots of potential. I’ll def. be keeping an eye on this space to see who moves in.

A couple of weeks ago Alliance Tavern closed their doors at 3238 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. Thanks to a reader for the heads up on the coming soon sign recently posted. It says that the new spot will be called District 2 Bar & Grille and comes from the owners of The Ugly Mug on Barrack’s Row and Maddy’s Bar and Grille in Dupont.
Their Web site says:
“District 2 Bar & Grille comes to the Cathedral Heights neighborhood with a mouth-watering formula of consistently great food combined with a casual and inviting dining ambiance. Located at the corners of Wisconsin and Macomb, NW, District 2 is the neighborhood’s only sports bar & grille.
The atmosphere is all about welcoming community dwellers and serving up quality food and drink, including more than a dozen domestic and imported brews. The delectable menu, created by accomplished Executive Chef J. Scott Webster, formerly of the Clyde’s Restaurant Group, combines the gourmet flavors of fine dining with the unique flare of your favorite bar, including their irresistible mini burgers and crowd favorites, sweet potato fries. ”
You can see their proposed menu here.
Before Alliance Tavern, this space was the home to Enology wine bar, and prior to that it was a coffee lounge under a few names including the Zebra room. For those familiar with the Ugly Mug and Maddy’s, do you think a similar spot will be a good fit here?

This home is located at 3140 Highland Pl, NW:
The flier says:
“Immaculate and enchanting renovated 1901 Victorian on quiet country lane. High ceilings, lg windows, gleaming floors & architectural detailing thruout. For those who never stumbled upon Highland Place it seriously is amazing. It’s interesting to see the price drop on this house though. It started out at $2,295,000 but is now yours for $1,950,000. How do you think this house ranks in the house porn category?

I know some folks have been going through ‘door of the day’ withdrawal (since I do gardens this time of year) but fear not, I became obsessed with windows this weekend. And yes I’m aware I’m not completely normal… But check out these phenomenal ones:

More after the jump. (more…)

This rental is located at 2824 Devonshire Pl NW:
The Craigslist ad says:
“-Updated Kitchen, Gas Stove, Hardwood Floors
-Water, Gas, Electric INCLUDED, Summer AC Fee ($50 per month per AC unit)
-Additional Storage Available, On-Site Manager, Vending Machines, Coin Operated Laundry”
Does $1420 sound reasonable for this 1 bedroom?

It seems this is another location that is tough to pick a winner. The former location of Enology Wine Bar became Alliance Tavern back in January. A reader noticed that the storefront had been recently papered over. A neighbor thinks that they’ve closed but I called their phone (and left a message) which is still connected as is their Web site.
Were there any fans of Allicance Tavern? Anyone hear any rumors of what’s going on here? I’ll be sure to update when more info becomes available.

The reader is looking for a pet friendly building closer to Mt. Pleasant and writes:
“I am hoping you and your wonderful readers can help me out with something. My 40 lb. dog and I need a new home, but I’ve been having a really hard time finding affordable dog-friendly buildings (or condos) in the Mt. Pleasant/ColHeights/U Street/Adams Morgan area. Do you have any tips for places I may have overlooked?”
Anyone have any good advice for finding a place that takes pets in that area?

“Dear PoP,
Maybe you’d be interested to know that Sabores has “unexpectedly closed” (Groupon had emailed everyone who had bought a Groupon for Sabores about receiving a refund). I have no idea why but it has been closed for quite a while. The rumor on the CP listserve was that is was due to “electrical problems” and that they were working it out with the landlords. The sign said that it was closed due to “complications”.”

And by today they also mean tomorrow
I’ve been getting a few emails about the closure of Sabores. This comes on the heels of last Sunday’s closure of the great Yanni’s Greek restaurant located across the street from Sabores. Sabores was located at 3433 Connecticut Ave, NW.
Were there any fans?
Update: Sept. 10 – a reader reports that Sabores has re-opened.

Wow, that is a cool staircase. What do you guys think about the house itself? I think this was actually a ‘Judging Homes’ selection back in the day (just judging the outside), it certainly is nontraditional. But I think the inside is pretty sweet. The reader who sent in the request was a bit shocked by the price – it’s yours for $1,987,700.

Yanni’s located at 3500 Connecticut Ave, NW closed its doors Sunday night. I am still in mourning. Yanni’s was not the fanciest of restaurants, it wouldn’t make Washingtonian’s ‘Best of’ list but for me it was one of the most reliable spots for a reasonably priced meal. I’m devastated. I chatted with a waiter to confirm and as he did he noted that they were given barely any notice only being told themselves of the closing last Tuesday.
Since the restaurant was always busy I gotta think it was the relatively new bar (that was rarely filled) that Yanni’s opened a few years ago that was their downfall. Yanni’s Gyro Platter, I’m gonna pour some tzatsiki sauce out for you tonight. Well, we had some good times Yanni’s! I wish the staff the best of luck.
Thanks to a reader for sending in the early word this weekend. He noted that Yanni’s has been in DC for over 20 years. Yanni’s you’ll be missed.
