From a press release:
“Ashok Bajaj of Knightsbridge Restaurant Group is pleased to announce the upcoming September opening of Little Black Bird at 3309 Connecticut Avenue, NW, next door to Sababa. With 30 seats in the main dining room and eight seats at the bar, this new, inviting wine bar will replace the original Bindaas, located in the Cleveland Park neighborhood, which will close on August 6. The name Little Black Bird is a nod to the French word for blackbird, merle. In turn, the name Merlot is derived from the word merle, which was a local dialectical word to describe blackbirds in the region. Merlot quickly began to gain popularity, and winemakers began widely planting the grape many referred to as “little blackbird” in the Bordeaux region of France. There is the possibility that the name is a reference to the dark skin of the grape or to the blackbirds that have a fondness for eating the grapes off the vine. Read More

My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class. It’s a victory of the great Cleveland Park neighborhood as a whole. We were the first, in this ancient neighborhood, to draw the “sword” against poor urban planning. After a while we were left all alone against the most tremendous NIMBY power that has been seen. We were mostly alone for over ten years. I say that in the long years to come not only will the people of this neighborhood but of the world, wherever the bird of freedom chirps in human hearts, look back to what we’ve done and they will say “do not despair, do not yield to terrible urban planning.”
You asked, what was our aim? We answered in one word: Victory. It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all ridiculous signage, however long and hard the road proved to be; for without victory, there is no vibrant neighborhood.

“Dear PoPville,
I am looking for witnesses to a pretty dramatic near-collision that happened a few minutes ago (Tuesday, 6/13 2:45 PM). I was in a light blue Mini traveling westbound on Porter St NW, waiting at the red light right at Connecticut. I was in the center lane that takes you straight across Connecticut.
I could tell the car in the left turn only lane wanted to go straight, but this isn’t even about that driver. I mention it only because when our light turned green and that driver and I both started to go across CT Ave together, with that car behind me and to my left, clearly trying to merge in behind me, about halfway across the intersection I saw a giant silver GMC pickup barreling up CT Ave northbound through the red light, about to t-bone me.
I swerved pretty wildly into northbound CT Ave to avoid the crash. Thank god there were no pedestrians. There was no impact; I have minor injuries from being slammed around inside my own car.
I pulled over on CT Ave northbound and put my flashers on. The truck, to my surprise, stopped as well. I spent several seconds just sitting to collect myself and then got out to talk to the other driver. Read More

Back in February 2022 we first learned that King Street Oyster Bar would be coming to City Ridge. At that time they had hoped to open “Fall 2022”, obviously way off that mark but very happy to see they are still coming, eventually.
