The Hechinger Mall Safeway has installed an elaborate system meant to stop some of the medium to large theft that has been troublesome for many retail stores in the District. It must be something that Safeway is rolling out to deal with loss prevention. It features an electronic swing gate at the entrance and heavy metal gates around the checkout areas. To get out from the self-checkout, you need to scan your receipt before the exit gate will open. I have seen this type of system at the Navy Yard Safeway. (more…)

Thanks to Emily for sending: “Another day, another flipped car in D.C. This time on Lang Pl NE. I slept through the crash but neighbors reported it sounded like something falling out of the sky around 4 a.m.”
Catherine and many others write around 7am this morning: “Does anyone know why on earth there’s a helicopter circling above Columbia Heights at this hour???”
Besides it being a park police helicopter not much else is known as of 9am, stay tuned.
