“Dear PoPville,

I just read Capitol Hill Corner‘s report Saturday Flea Market Surrenders License to Operate on 300 Block of 7th Street:

“Thursday afternoon, Barry Margeson, Eastern Market Manager, announced that the Department of General Services (DGS) license allowing the Saturday flea market to occupy the 300 block of 7th Street on Saturdays had expired on December 1, 2018 and “is terminated.” The message stated, “On February 7, 2019, DGS will advertise a Request for Proposals (RFP) for management of the 300 block of 7th Street on Saturdays.”

It seems to say that Eastern Market flea market will be only operating on Sundays from now on…

I hope the word gets out so that the community can find a way to keep it open!”

“Dear PoPville,

Passing this on, “Please lookout for my husband, missing with Alzheimer’s”

UPDATE 8am Friday, still missing after 13 1/2 hours. Thursday at 6:30pm, I was crossing the street with him at Massachusetts & North Capitol NW, near Irish Times and the main post office there, and he disappeared. He has Alzheimer’s. Police have been alerted but please keep a lookout. He is wearing the same coat as in photo and similar red plaid pajama pants. He may be carrying a red tote bag. He walks far so he could be anywhere by now.

Also, here is the link to MPD tweet.”

From a press release:

“One of the most troubling stories arising from the current government shut down is the break in pay for the United States Coast Guard (USCG). While the other members of the uniformed services are receiving pay, the men and women of the Coast Guard are not. The USCG falls under the Department of Homeland Security, which has not received its appropriation due to the shutdown.

One organization that will be called on to meet the short-term needs of Coast Guardsmen in financial distress is Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA). “Established and operated by Coast Guard people for Coast Guard people, CGMA provides a way to extend compassion to one another in times of need. It serves as a vital financial safety net, promoting financial stability and general wellbeing, fostering high morale and encouraging a sense of loyalty to the Coast Guard.”

In response to this looming crisis, Kenneth H. Nash Post #8 on Capitol Hill will be conducting a special happy hour fundraiser at its post at 224 D ST SE Washington DC 20003, from 5:30PM to 8PM on 17 January 2019. The fundraiser will be headlined by Nashville recording Artists ‘Wil Gravatt’ band (https://www.wilgravatt.com/). The cost of the event is $10. In addition, The Post will be conducting a 50/50 drawing and a silent auction. The Post has started a Go Fund Me Page for those who wish to separately donate (https://goo.gl/N4Unca). All proceeds from the event go to Coast Guard Mutual Assistance. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

When I was signing in at Cove on Capitol Hill the other day, I happened to look down at the pile of marketing postcards they had on the front desk, and I noticed that Cap Hill was missing from their list of locations (see photo above). I inquired with the person at the front desk, who confirmed that, sure enough, the Capitol Hill location will be closing soon. I don’t have any further information than that, and am not sure if/when they plan on letting members know, so was curious if anyone has some more intel?”
