From scuttlebutt that started back in June 2012 comes District Taco’s grand opening on Capitol Hill in the former YES! Organic Market space at 656 Pennsylvania Ave, SE. This will be their second DC location. In May ’12 they opened their first DC spot in Penn Quarter.  You can see their menu here.  You can see the new Capitol Hill location is huge and turned out great:

In more opening soon news – I spoke with some workers at Nooshi opening above the recently opened Tash House of Kabob on Barracks Row and they said (on Sat.) the space should be open in six or seven days.

Nooshi also has a location at 1120 19th St, NW and their website says:

For those who’ve been missing the Corner Bakery at Union Station, the new one opening up at 500 North Capitol St, NW looks really close to opening. The former space at Union Station will become a Le Pain Quotidien. This new Corner Baker is much bigger than the one in Union Station. Should be open any day now.

Art Smith is done with his winter hibernation and finished with his spring cleaning.

Welcoming the public back to Art & Soul this past Tuesday after closing for month long renovations, chef / owner Smith proudly showed off his updated dining room and menus.

Gone are the sterile white booths along the back walls. The dated brick red colors in the foyer and drab browns of the past are nowhere to be found. Instead, fresh air has been breathed into the spacious and airy dining rooms. Textured walls – the back of the restaurant is newly speckled with waves of multicolored beans – add interest to the interior. Sleek, deep brown herringbone wood floors replace dated carpeting. The carefully curated urban market aesthetic of the restaurant spills into the spacious bar area: the bartenders wear pastel plaid bow ties and waxy canvas aprons. The long bar entices visitors to linger over an updated cocktail menu and shareable bar snacks.

Together with Executive Chef Wes Morton, Smith has centered the updated menus around locally sourced ingredients from family owned and operated artisans and growers and has selected small batch distillers and breweries to provide the spirits and beers featured behind his bar. The chefs still celebrate honest Southern cooking, but old classics have been revived with fresh new accompaniments and playful bar snacks – cajun boudin balls and fried pickled green tomatoes – complement the craft cocktails.

Dear PoPville,

I wanted to send you a note about Beuchert’s Saloon — I went here for drinks last night and had a fantastic time! I wanted to tell you about them, and see if other people had checked them out. They’ve been open for a little over two weeks, and the staff are some of the most genuine people I’ve encountered in the service industry. Apparently, I’m told by a Capitol Hill local that this stretch of Pennsylvania Ave they’re on isn’t an easy one to draw in the crowd, but they were already packed on a Wednesday night. Outta this world cocktails, great marble bar, and two enormous bison heads mounted on the wall.

We previewed Buchert’s, located at 623 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, back in early Feb. You can see their menu here. Anyone else check them out yet?

Ambar recently opened back in Jan. in the former Jordan’s 8 space on Barracks Row. Their website says:

The term Balkan is generally believed to come from the Turkish word Balkan meaning “a chain of wooded mountains”. With a desire to introduce D.C. to cutting edge Balkan cuisine proprietor Ivan Iricanin has created a dining space that will delight and indulge the senses. Primarily featuring “small plates” Ambar will also offer wines and spirits from the Balkans not often experienced by the American diner.
