Check out their menu here Garrison Dinner Summer 2015

From a press release:

“Chef Rob Weland will open his first independently owned and operated restaurant, Garrison, on July 22. Located at 524 8th Street, SE, along the historic commercial corridor, Barracks Row, Garrison will soft open initially for dinner service, with weekend brunch soon following. As part of the soft opening, Garrison will accept limited reservations and walk-ins for the first week of operation. The menu is reflective of Weland’s philosophy of using local, sustainably grown ingredients whenever possible, to create clean, simple dishes that embody each season.

The opening menu is categorized by “raw and cured,” “vegetables,” “pasta,” “fish and seafood,” “fire-roasted meats” and “dessert.” Weland’s signature style of rustic yet sophisticated cooking is reflective in many dishes like a seasonal tomato gazpacho with mustard ice cream and a burrata appetizer with grilled peaches and dandelion. Handmade pastas, roasted meats and fish round out the entrees with selections such as nettle and ricotta ravioli with chantrelles and fine herbs, Long Island duck breast with lavender, fennel and peaches and wild striped bass with champ potatoes, poached eggs, lemon and capers. Weland will work closely with Mike Protas of Boyd, Md.’s One Acre Farm, popular on Capitol Hill for his weekly CSA, to directly source custom-grown produce for the neighborhood restaurant. (more…)

Hine School

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser joined Eastbanc, Inc. and Stanton Development to break ground on Hine School Redevelopment, a $224 million project in Ward 6 that will complete the corner of 700 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, with mixed-use development that includes retail, affordable housing, and a new public plaza.

The redevelopment of the Hine School site is expected to generate nearly 2,500 construction period jobs and over 700 permanent jobs. Once completed, annual new tax revenues of $5 million is expected. The Hine Redevelopment will deliver nearly 60,000 square feet of retail space – with 20% reserved for local tenants – 180,000 square feet of office space, and 327 parking spaces.

Additionally, the development is also expected to provide 162 apartments, which will include 46 affordable housing units, with 17 of those units set aside for seniors.

During construction, the popular Eastern Market Flea Market will continue to operate on Saturday and Sunday on 7th Street, SE. Once construction is completed, the flea market will operate on the new C Street, SE and public plaza on weekends. Also, the Hine Redevelopment project’s commitment to sustainability includes a LEED-certified design, green roofs, car-sharing and underground bike racks.

Over the next month, workers will begin excavating the site and by the end of the year concrete work will commence. Delivery of the entire project is expected in 2017.

A replacement for Shark Week’s Chompie in Silver Spring’s Discovery building? Just like sharks? Either way it makes for a great house of the day. From Capitol Hill.

@zoeica tweets us the scene above this morning:

“Not much left now of old school on 7th SE & Pennsylvania”

The Hine School project will rank high on the list of places we do double takes when it’s completed.

I also thought it was pretty surreal when I walked by on Saturday and saw the demo in the background of the temporary flea market:

“Dear PoPville,

Friends of ours found this baby (only 5 weeks old) suffering from dehydration in front of a house at 13th and Maryland Ave, NE. The The neighbor said that our friend should probably take the puppy because it wouldn’t make it. Animal control has been called to that house before and they have beware of dog signs all around the yard. What course of action can someone take to make sure that there aren’t any other puppies inside that house?”
