Last night Capitol Hill Corner broke the big news for Las Placitas fans:
“Capitol Hill Corner has confirmed that Las Placitas, the popular Barracks Row Restaurant, will relocate to lower 8th Street, SE, opposite the Navy Yard by year’s end.”
The former Quiznos space has been vacant since Dec. 2012. In May we learned that the current Las Placitas location at 517 8th Street, SE will close and be taken over by neighboring Matchbox in October. And back in May we also learned that Las Placitas had started work on their 16th Street Heights location. Updates all around when openings happen.

“Dear PoPville,
Last night I was eating outside at a restaurant on Barracks Row. At around 9:30, the women at the table next to mine — in the next restaurant over — had an iPhone snatched from their table by someone running by on the sidewalk. It happened so fast, but a man chatting with the women (who we later were told was that restaurant’s manager) took off like lightning, chasing them down the street at a full clip. Before we left, the women told us he had actually caught them and that the police were there now (we did see two police vehicles drive down the block a few minutes after the incident). Well done on the manager’s part, for sure, but I mostly write this as a reminder so people will know to put away not only their purses and bags from easy reach, but also their phones.”

“My cat, Tigrecita, went missing from 3rd and E Street, NE last night around 6pm. She is mostly white with large black spots on her back, a black tail, and stripes on her forehead. She has two brown patches near her nose that resemble a little mustache, and weighs about 14 pounds. Her collar is black and white with a skull and crossbones pattern, and she has a rabies tag attached that indicates the date of recent vaccinations and contact info for the vet (she also has a microchip). She responds to “kitty” or “Tigrecita.” Please call 804-248-2884 if you have any information!
-Angela”

Check out their menu here – Garrison Dinner Summer 2015
From a press release:
“Chef Rob Weland will open his first independently owned and operated restaurant, Garrison, on July 22. Located at 524 8th Street, SE, along the historic commercial corridor, Barracks Row, Garrison will soft open initially for dinner service, with weekend brunch soon following. As part of the soft opening, Garrison will accept limited reservations and walk-ins for the first week of operation. The menu is reflective of Weland’s philosophy of using local, sustainably grown ingredients whenever possible, to create clean, simple dishes that embody each season.

The opening menu is categorized by “raw and cured,” “vegetables,” “pasta,” “fish and seafood,” “fire-roasted meats” and “dessert.” Weland’s signature style of rustic yet sophisticated cooking is reflective in many dishes like a seasonal tomato gazpacho with mustard ice cream and a burrata appetizer with grilled peaches and dandelion. Handmade pastas, roasted meats and fish round out the entrees with selections such as nettle and ricotta ravioli with chantrelles and fine herbs, Long Island duck breast with lavender, fennel and peaches and wild striped bass with champ potatoes, poached eggs, lemon and capers. Weland will work closely with Mike Protas of Boyd, Md.’s One Acre Farm, popular on Capitol Hill for his weekly CSA, to directly source custom-grown produce for the neighborhood restaurant. (more…)
