metro mutts
508 H St, NE will remain open

On Friday when we spoke about H Street and gentrification there were fears that Metro Mutts could be in trouble when Petco arrives. Thanks to a reader for passing on the update:

“After several years of operating retail out of two Capitol Hill locations, we have decided to put our full retail energy and concentration into just one brick & mortar location. Our choice of the H Street shop was primarily driven by the larger footprint, our long-standing relationship with the neighborhood (the owners have lived off H Street since before MM was opened), and the nearby proximity to our close friends & business partners Spot On Training . With this in mind, we are closing our SE location at 407 8th St SE when the lease comes up for renewal in June.

Our flagship store at 508 H St NE remains open and there are NO plans to close or back down in any way, as a result of Petco’s planned arrival in the neighborhood this summer. If you hear rumors to the contrary, we hope you will help spread the word that Metro Mutts NE is here to stay for as long as our loyal customers will support us! We are committed to not only supporting other local small businesses in our neighborhood but fighting to keep our own small business going strong! (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Potential update to the Lincoln Park Dog Incident.

In Lincoln Park this afternoon [Friday], police are giving out tickets to owners with off-leash dogs. I saw the guy let his dog loose and throw a tennis ball a few minutes before this. I honestly hadn’t noticed a cop, and I felt bad because there weren’t many people around, plus the dog seemed sweet. But after Kiki’s wounds, I totally get it. The owner was very respectful and patient during the ticket writing process, so kudos for that.”

“Dear dog owners and neighbors:

On April 6, 2016, around 7pm, there was an incident in Lincoln Park with an offleash dog that resulted in my (leashed) dog Kiki having three puncture wounds on her neck and needing immediate serious vet care.

I am trying to locate the owner of this dog. The offleash dog was medium-large size (50 to 70 pounds?), tan/brown, shorthaired. Maybe named Kirby, or something similar.

If you know the owner, or are the owner, please contact me as soon as possible.

Thank you for your help.”

From MPD:

“The First Police District is investigating the report of an Armed Carjacking that occurred last evening at approximately 9:30 PM. The victim reported that he was approached by a suspect who displayed a handgun, demanded his car keys and drove off in the vehicle. The vehicle was recovered a few hours later in Southeast DC unoccupied. This is an OPEN case currently being investigated by the First Police District Detectives Office.”

Sona Creamery posted the sad news on their Facebook page:

“We are sad to announce we will be closing our doors Monday, April 11, 2016.

After 3 years of working the regulatory chain to get raw milk in the District, and become the first cheese creamery, we were paying rent for space that wasn’t supporting itself. Unfortunately, this has made it impossible to remain open.

Even though Sona’s concept took too long to fully implement, we are proud of what we were able to accomplish.

First commercial cheese creamery in the history of DC
Were able to bring first raw milk into the District since 1952
Maintained four stars on Yelp
2015 Slow Food award winner
2014 Hilly Awards runner up for best new restaurant and best new business on the Hill
Numerous write ups by food writers and columns
Thrillist top new DC restaurants of 2014

We are grateful for the memories and wonderful people we met along this journey. Thank you for all of your support.”

Mug Bug2

Speaking of Navy Yard – from the Ugly Mug on Barracks Row (723 8th Street, SE):

“Every Nationals Game the Ugly Mug on Capitol Hill offers a free ride to & from the stadium in the Mug Bug. Stop by grab some grub and beers – get driven right to the stadium. With great food & drink specials – pint, pitcher & beer towers along with brick oven pizzas, pizza rolls and Italian subs. The perfect start or finish to every Nats game.”

Ed. Note: With all the new spots open and opening in Navy Yard, I wonder how many folks will continue to hit Barracks Row before games?
