Another great Brookland specimen. This one also has some wild lawn decorations (that we once looked at a couple years ago).

“Dear PoP,

I was wondering if you have noticed the demolition of the old CUA dorm buildings taking place on the corner of 7th and Monroe St. NE? Do you or any of your readers happen to know what is going on there?

I’ve heard rumors of a new building going up with mixed office/retail space. This sounds like a great addition to the neighborhood!”

Another reader sent word about the plans from Bozzuto:

The multi-phase Catholic University South Campus redevelopment will be located on five city blocks in Washington, D.C.’s Brookland neighborhood, adjacent to the Brookland Metro station and just three miles north of the U.S. Capitol. The community will ultimately consist of a progressive mix of uses: approximately 720 residential units, 45 townhomes, 83,000 square feet of street-level retail, 15,000 square feet of artist studio space, a 3,000 square-foot community arts center, and 850 parking spaces. Approved plans also include streetscape and hardscape improvements which will greatly improve the South Campus’s walkability, creating a lively, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere and significantly improving traffic patterns and pedestrian crossings along Michigan Avenue.

It expects to be completed in 2013.

This is terrifying. I’ve heard from a resident who said it was as scary as it sounds – From MPD:

On February 13, 2011 at approximately 2230 hours Fifth District units were dispatched to the 1000 block of Irving street ne for masked subjects entering a home, burglary in the first degree. Officers arrived almost immediately and confirmed a home invasion, officers surrounded the home when suddenly the suspects began to exit the house from the rear while firing weapons at the officers, the officers while in fear for their lives returned fire striking the suspects. Two of the suspects were transported to area hospitals, another suspect was taken into custody as well. All three suspects will be examined in relation to other crimes in the area.

“Dear PoP,

The issues with these dogs have been going on for months… and no one seems to have the courage to actually take the dogs away. I’m pro-dog, pro-pet, but this is not responsible dog-ownership. It’s amazing that the city has no means to deal with repeat offenders before we have a crisis.

A female was just attacked by 3 pit bulls in the alley near my house parallel to 22nd St NE between Otis and Perry. Fortunately some brave souls came to help her as I’m pregnant and just hearing her screams gave me contractions so I would not have been any help if I made it outside and would have gone into labor – All I did was call 911.

I’m not sure who it was, but the ambulance came and the emt’s are knocking on doors on 22nd to help the victim. If you know anything – or if it was you and we can help – please let us know.

As for everyone else please be vigilant and be careful. These pit bulls are from the 2200 block of Otis St NE. They have been out terrorizing the neighborhood way too often.

My complaints to the police and animal control have been ignored. We have too many small children at risk.
Please help before someone else gets hurt.”

This rental is located at 20th Street NE at Newton Street NE:

The Craigslist ad says:

“This beautiful upstairs furnished apartment is currently for rent in the Brookland/Woodridge area near Catholic University. The apartment has utilities included, a separate entrance, air conditioning, Washer/Dryer and is Metro accessible. Ideal for students. Seeking non-smoking tenants without pets.”

How do you think the separate entrance works?

$825 sound reasonable?

This Brookland addition is totally wild. Never in a million years did I expect to see it on this block because every single house was a brick row house. Having said that, I think it’s awesome. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

Couple more shots after the jump. (more…)

We first spoke about this new micro-brewery coming to DC back in July ’10. Last week I stopped by the amazing space located on the 2800 block of 8 St, NE and chatted with one of Chocolate City Beers’ partners, Jay Irizarry. Let me first say that the space is amazing. It is still getting a bit of work done but you can get an idea of how cool it is and will be. Rumor has it that it was once the spot where stone was cut for the nearby basilica. Naturally the folks from Chocolate City Beer will one day offer stonecutter beer. I’m gonna post a ton of pictures after the jump that will give you a taste of just how sweet this spot is.

But back to the brewery. Number one – the space is going to be used for a production brewery only. It is possible that in the future there could be some sort of brew pub on the second floor but there are no plans for that in the short/near term. It would obviously require multiple permits and approvals. At the moment they hope to produce 20-40 kegs a week with the first one going out in March (if all goes well). You’ll be able to find Chocolate City Beer kegs at many neighborhood bars around town. I’ll update a full list when the first kegs are shipped. One final cool element about the building is that they’ll be growing hops up the back of the building and will possibly have bees on the roof.

I think I speak for many when I wish them Godspeed. And of course updates will follow when warranted.

Back of building where hops will grow.

Lots more photos, including inside, after the jump. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up. The Casey Trees Web site says:

In 2008, after a three year search, we found a suitable match in Brookland. Two properties located across the street from each other – 3030 and 3015 12th Street NE – will serve as our new office and tree yard respectively.

For our office, we are retaining and renovating the existing 4,000 square foot structure and adding an additional 4,500 square feet. The final building will feature a large conference room to accommodate our year round education programming, a staging area for planting materials and volunteer activities and other amenities including an elevator.

We have designed the exterior to include a rain garden, a bio-retention planter and a greenroof. We intend to use these exterior elements to demonstrate how even a small building, if designed correctly, can help slow and filter stormwater from the site and street, reduce energy consumption and produce several other environmental benefits.
