“Dear PoP,

809 Kennedy St, NW was on PoP here, a year ago.

While the disgusting flow of water did get resolved, the property is still a shoddily-fenced disaster — huge pits full of stagnant water, a wasteland of mud and debris. And it’s been like that forever. Again, it’s slightly better than it was in that PoP post from a year ago (chain-link fence surrounds it, and the piles of debris got a bit smaller, it’s not quite as smelly), but it’s worse than an eyesore, it’s dangerous and depressing.

Is there anything residents can do about properties like that? Or is it, since it’s private property, OK by the city as long as their taxes are paid?”

We need to get DCRA and Ward 4 Council Member Bowser’s office to follow up on this property. Since there doesn’t seem to be an actual property on the property – does anyone know how this affects how it gets taxed? Do you guys have any other suggestions on how to remove this blight beyond contacting DCRA and CM Bowser’s office?

“Dear PoP,

Last week I told you about “Klassy Kakes” moving into 705 Kennedy and you got some good feedback. I haven’t notice any movement yet but next door a New business will be moving in at 703 Kennedy.
I had a chance to speak with the owners of the new business and found out that It Will be a flower shop ,”‘L’Enfant Flowers” they used to be at the L’Enfant Plaza and are now relocating to Kennedy . They also said they would be open next week sometime just in time for Mother’s Day and Easter.”

“Dear PoP,

Yesterday when I was on my way to work I spotted this new sign located at 705 Kennedy Street N.W.
I says that a new business is opening call KLASSY KAKES . That would be great for the neighborhood , now
all we need is a Starbucks and that would really be great.”

Nice! Think cupcakes/cakes/kakes will do well here? Since the reader brought it up – think a Starbucks would do well here?

And, hell, I’m gonna go on a bit of tangent – why aren’t there more Dunkin’ Donuts around DC?

Here we go again. This comes after yesterday’s afternoon shooting at a police officer nearby at New Hampshire Emerson St NW. From MPD:

“Around 3pm, units received a call for a shooting at 5th and Kennedy Sts NW. An adult male victim was located suffering from an apparent non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The suspect is described as a black male wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, black cap with a scarf covering the face armed with a handgun.

Detectives are conducting interviews at this time and we ask that anyone with information please call 1-888-919-CRIME.”

We’ve heard a lot of objections to Walmart and the Adams Morgan Hotel plans. So I thought it was noteworthy to see some groups rallying in support:

Since there has been some concern raised that nobody is organizing those of us in the neighborhood who SUPPORT the Walmart development, I’ve taken on that task. I’ve created a new Yahoo Group, titled Ward4WalmartSupporters. If you’d like to join, please search the group out on Yahoo Groups, or send an email to [email protected]

We will discuss, constructively, some of the concerns that have been raised in these fora, develop ideas on how to constructively engage the developer and Walmart to ensure those concerns are heard and most importantly, act as a voice for those who want and need easy access to a low-cost retail and grocery option in our neighborhood.

And for the Adams Morgan Hotel from the AdamsMorgan MainStreet Group:

“***Clarification One: Creation of the availability of a tax abatement does not mean the project is approved. It only means the next steps of public approval can begin — the PUD process through ANC, HPRB, and BZA with public announcements and comments.

***Clarification Two: Anyone who is worried about budget cuts, should be for this project. Applied to a non-producing church property, it actually ADDS REVENUE TO CITY COFFERS which can be applied to programs. This project could make up some of the revenue the city has had to deduct from needed services. This $46 million tax abatement does not impact the city’s debt at all, and only adds cash flow because it abates taxes that do not yet exist. $7 million in CASH from all taxes and fees (only property tax is postponed) is paid annually during the tax abatement period ($5 million net to city if prorate the abatement). When the abatement period ends, the total revenue to the city goes up to $9, 10 – 15 million and more as the years go by.

Continues after the jump (more…)
