Help The Center City Public Charter School Students Go Camping

“The Center City Public Charter School Brightwood Campus will be attending their 2nd annual camping trip this Spring. 60 middle school students will arrive at Echo Hill camp grounds where they will spend the night participating in the residential program. Students in Echo Hill’s residential programs become fully immersed in the outdoor environment. These residential programs are designed to complement classroom learning by providing unique opportunities for academic and social growth. Guided by Echo Hill teachers, students learn and interact with peers and teachers in a new and exciting environment.

We are asking that you help us get there!

*Money raised will help students who are not able to pay the full balance for the trip*”

The reader adds:

“Most of the student have never been exposed to the wonders of nature because they live in the city. Nearly every student is on free and reduced lunch and would not be able to pay for this trip on their own so we try to make it a free opportunity for all. Students take science classes at the Echo Hill camp ground, explore nature though guided hikes and participate in team-building and collaborative activities throughout the two days.”

Kennedy Street Business and Development Association Launches – “tremendous potential for Kennedy Street to thrive”

“Dear PoPville,

We know you’ve hosted conversations about new developments on Kennedy Street NW in the past, so we thought you might be willing to share an update about some exciting movement on the street:

We’ve recently formed the Kennedy Street Business and Development Association (KSBDA), an all-volunteer, grass-roots movement of current and prospective business owners, as well as a handful of residents with interest in commercial development on the street.  We’re still in the early stages of forming our identity, but we have all come together because we see the tremendous potential for Kennedy Street to thrive, and we think that together we can make it happen.  The KSBDA hopes to create a unified voice for those interested in seeing Kennedy Street grow; to lead promotions that draw attention to the street’s current businesses and make Kennedy a more walk-able and vibrant strip that attracts new businesses; and to help mobilize resources and expertise that aid existing businesses to better respond to the desires of the community. Popping up (and back) in Brightwood

“Dear PoPville,

The first one at 5th and Ingraham [picture above] contrasts greatly from the neighbors in terms of colors and height, but likely won’t be a standout for long.

The second [pictures after the jump] is around the corner on Jefferson just west of 5th. I haven’t seen a conversion like this one in Petworth/Brightwood yet. The sideyard of this once-duplex enables three 3-story units to be accessed separately on the side instead of from a shared front entrance. From the back, you can really see how much massing was added compared with its attached counterpart.

Hope this bodes well for Kennedy’s eventual revival.” (more…)

Simple Bar and Grill Now Open in Brightwood

“Simple Bar and Grill will be open the for New Year’s Eve! The menu will be very Simple and tasty, we have a fixed menu that will be a 4 course diner but we will be open from 11:30 am and serve are regular menu until 5 pm the kitchen will close from 5 to 8 to prepare New Year’s Eve but the bar will be open for drinks and bar food. The fixed dinner will cost 55 for one person or 100 per 2 and it will start at 7:30 to 8:00 the dinner is a 4 course dinner.”

Simple Bar and Grill is located just south of Missouri and the new Walmart on Georgia Ave.

Shooting Homicide at 9pm Saturday Night in Brightwood

“The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a homicide which occurred in the 900 block of Sheridan Street, NW.

On Saturday, December 7, 2013, at approximately 8:58 pm, officers from the Fourth District responded to the 900 block of Sheridan Street, Northwest for the report for the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, they located an adult male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded and did not find any signs consistent with life. The decedent remained on the scene and was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner pending an autopsy and a determination of a cause and manner of death.

The decedent is identified as 31 year-old Demetrius Eccles of Northwest, Washington, DC.”
