“I was walking to my car this morning in the alley behind Quincy pl nw [North capital on one end and 1st st nw on the other end in Bloomingdale] and I saw this dog with tags running around. The dog kept running from me when I tried to get close to him so I couldn’t grab him. I did get close enough to see that his name on his tag was Smokie. I had to get to work so I ended up calling animal control but hopefully the owner sees this so they can pick Smokie up and get him home!”

Thanks to all who sent links to this video:

“The McMillan Sand Filtration Site is one of Washington, DC’s most conspicuous mysteries: a fenced-off 25-acre grassy plain just over 2 miles north of Capitol Hill, marked by rows of tall concrete cylinders clothed in overgrown ferns. Unbeknownst to the thousands of commuters and residents that pass by its rusted gates daily, below this sprawling parcel of land lies a series of vast underground caverns built in the early 20th century by the Army Corps of Engineers as a natural purification facility for DC’s turbid water supply.

Sealed to the public at the onset of World War II, the park above the filtration cells has been inaccessible ever since. Now, almost 30 years since its official closure, the site – a curious holdout among DC’s recent wave of rapid urban development – has become the subject of a widespread debate over its future use.”

Ed. Note: You can see some renderings for the planned new development here.

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking down Rhode Island Ave NW with a male friend at 2:00 pm [Saturday] when a man came up behind me and tried to snatch my purse. I screamed and he ran; luckily my purse strap went across my body and he couldn’t get anything. He was about 6 feet tall, and wearing a white halloween mask (which made it all the more scary). I can’t believe how bold he was, 2:00 pm and with a male friend!

I hope you can post this so others in the area will see it and be careful! I was about at 25 Rhode Island NW.”

Thanks to @ryan2499 who tweeted the photo Saturday night.

In the twitter conversation he also wrote about El Camino (108 Rhode Island Ave, NW):

“@ElCaminoDC definitely doing private soft open. It’s a SCENE here. Muscle cars, camera men, attendants w/ ear pieces.”

From MPD:

“On October 23, 2014, members of the Fifth District Vice Unit conducted an operation to identify and apprehend persons involved in the theft of mail packages in PSA 501. During the operation, members observed an individual in possession of a stolen package and effected an arrest. The theft occurred in the unit block of Rhode Island Avenue, Northwest. The stolen package and its contents were documented and returned to the rightful owner.

With the help of the Fifth District Detectives Unit and the US Postal Inspection Service, the person arrested has been linked to numerous package thefts throughout the Fifth District dating back to January 2014.

The individual was also in possession of Halloween Costume which may have been taken from a package in an unreported theft. If anyone has knowledge of a missing mail package containing a Halloween Costume, please contact me at the email address or phone numbers listed below.

Thank you,

“Dear PoPville,

There were two attempted muggings last night in Bloomingdale. First was on T street near 1st. Second one was on Seaton Place. I know because I helped stop the first one but he got away. Apparently the guy tried again a couple blocks from us but he failed and ran away again. 0 for 2 on the night. Not a smooth criminal.

Anyway, just thought it may be something you’d like to post so people in Bloomingdale stay alert. The guy was clearly not very smart if he was trying to mug people like 15 minutes apart.

He wasn’t brandishing a weapon so the threat was somewhat minimal, but you never know what he’ll bring with him next time, especially if he’s desperate.”

It’s been a while since we heard about El Camino coming to Rhode Island Ave by Boundary Stone – but I took a peek earlier in the week and they are nearly finished with the buildout. I was told if all goes well they should be able to open by the end of the month. El Camino is the:

“full-service restaurant featuring traditional-style Mexican food with a variety of Latin cocktails, by the partners behind 1905 Bistro & Bar as well as Tony Lucca and Phil Rodriguez also of Sticky Rice DC.”

and around the corner is Costa Brava.

The even longer wait for Spanish tapas serving Costa Brava looks to be coming to an end too. Sign is up and construction seems to be wrapping up as well. Their facebook page says:

“Barcelona meets DC Lounge!”

And across the street from El Camino is Showtime who have applied for “a sidewalk café with an occupancy load of 6 seats”.
