Dry Cleaners News – They’re Not Just Closing!

While we’ve heard of the closings on 14th Street (Swann Cleaners and the one a bit further south) I’m happy to report a couple of new openings.  Bill’s cleaners had finally opened up at the corner of 13th and Florida Ave (1301 Florida Ave, NW).

And Cupid Cleaners has opened up in Adams Morgan at 1704 Euclid Street, NW. This is an organic cleaners that will have a 20% grand opening discount for a couple of months. Because Bill’s was closed when I walked by I only got pricing info for Cupid. Before the discount shirts are $1.35, pants are $4.95, and suits are $9.95.

New “Coffee Shop” Coming To Adams Morgan

Well this is exciting news for Adams Morgan. There has been a lot of lamenting about closed storefronts on 18th Street, so it’s nice to see some new businesses going in. It will be located at 2204 18th Street, NW next to the clothing store Shake Your Booty. Here’s to hoping they have good bagels!

Pizza Hut Robbed on 1700 Block of Columbia Road, NW

Thanks to a reader for sending from MPD:

“On December 29, 2009, at approximately 11:05 PM, a lone black male robbed the Pizza Hut and its employees. It appears that the suspect hid inside of the Pizza Hut before closing, and then made himself known once the establishment closed. The suspect approached the manager and demanded that he retrieve the money from the safe. The manager advised the suspect that the safe was closed and he did not have access, the suspect then took money from the register and the employees and fled through the rear door. The suspect is described as a Black male, wearing a white shirt. This incident is being investigated by the Third District Detectives office. Anyone with information is urged to contact MPD at 202-727-9099.”

STROGA, From Owner of Results Gym, Coming to Adams Morgan

Thanks to a couple of readers for sending word of this new spot coming to 1808 Adams Mill Road, NW (by Columbia and 18th). The STROGA Web site says:

“Washington, DC’s newest fitness concept, STROGA, is coming to Adams Morgan. Stroga will offer a revolutionary fusion of strength training and yoga, the oldest and newest methods of body conditioning…

Doug Jefferies, owner of Results Gym, was inspired by his own yoga practice and his experiences in personal training and strength conditioning. His desire to combine the two philosophies resulted in the creation of Stroga.

1808 Adams Mill Road (the L’Aiglon Building) is at the junction of Columbia Road, Adams Mill and 18th Street. Dating back to the early 1900’s the building has a rich history as both a private residence and commercial property. Owned by Douglas Development, a renovation of the building’s fine woodwork and moldings was completed in 2007. Stroga will preserve the integrity of the space, following an adaptive reuse tradition found in many of the Results Gym locations.”

Dear PoP – Be Careful of Possible ATM Skimming in Adams Morgan

“Dear PoP,

In the last two days I’ve noticed on my online bank statement two fraudulent and extremely high (the max that can be withdrawn in a 24hr span) ATM withdrawals. I’ve since locked the card, filed a dispute with the bank, and filed a police report. I suspect it was due to a local ATM card skimming operation. Whoever is withdrawing the cash has done so from the Wachovia Bank (not my bank) @ 1804 Adams Mill Road, NW and another unaddressed ATM in Adams Morgan. Just wanted to remind people, especially during the holidays, to be weary of this scam and to check ATMs for suspicious looking attachments and cameras, and especially to monitor their online statements like a hawk. Also, I wanted to inquire if any other readers have experienced this lately and in particular with that Wachovia location.”

Judging Restaurants – Sawah Diner

I guess I’m on a bit of a Diner kick lately. We briefly looked at this spot back when they opened in July at 2222 18th St., NW. At the time a few folks had really good experiences. Now that they’ve been open for a while I’m wondering if more folks have checked them out? Everytime I walk by it doesn’t seem to be too crowded which surprised me. Any regulars out there?
