“Dear PoP,

New and massive tag on the wonder bread factory…big white letters on the side in addition to multiple tags on the roof. Guess it’ll be just a weeee bit longer til the shaw/howard metro gets the long overdue development…”

Damn this looks awful. Owners of the Wonderbread factory definitely deserve a horse’s ass award for keeping this property on ice for so long. The building is located on the 600 block of S Street, NW. A reader posted some photos from inside here.

I think folks have mentioned this before but I finally got a photo of it. It is the cylindrical house with the EasyGard wrap around it that has looked like this for years. It is right near the LeDroit Park metal sign on Florida Ave, NW.

Do you think the original renovators just went bankrupt? It is such a sweet property, I wish it would be auctioned off if it is going to remain in this state of disrepair.

Horses Ass Award has to go the building at Sherman Ave and Park Road, NW. We’ve been teased with some progress but it has been in its current state for quite a while. It is truly an eyesore and worthy of this horses ass award.

And while I was on Sherman, I’ve walked by this building a million times (Sherman and Harvard), does anyone know what it exactly is?

“Please take a look at the southeast corner of 7th St and Q Street NW…an abandoned liquor store has sat there for years.”

And while we’re looking at abandoned old liquor stores I’d also like to nominate one on the corner of 9th and U Street, NW:

These are both prime properties that one only hopes will be fixed up soon. I really hope they are being taxed at the vacant rate…

We had a Dear PoP about this property, located on 14th Street across from the Allegro, back in February. And you can see there has been no visible progress. I mean if it’s gonna be vacant and construction has stopped maybe they can paint a big mural on it or something. Right?

Ed. Note: I still have some reader requested Horse’s Ass Award nominees and I promise I’ll get to them. If you have more nominations please email them to me.

“Dear PoP,

I have a nomination for the Jackass award. The monstrosity on New Hampshire and Upshur. They have someone out their right now putting up a 6 foot tall chain link fence with barbed wire on top. I am sure that will look really good to people who might be considering a move to the neighborhood.”

While I think the reader was thinking of the Horse’s Ass Award, I would say this one warrants a jackass award as well. I can’t walk past this monstrosity on the corner of New Hampshire and Upshur without shedding a tear. And just when you think it can’t get any worse, well this fence goes up. I’m sure it must be temporary but it’s still rather unpleasant at the moment. I’ve seen tons of houses being renovated and this is the only one that I’ve seen that requires a fence with barbed wire. Ugh. Maybe in two more years it’ll get finished…

I gave Howard Theater the Horse’s Ass Award at the beginning of the month. Well, I’ve gotten a few emails that work has finally started! Awesome. One reader sums it up nicely:

“It’s news because they are finally starting the long awaited work on Howard Theater.”

Indeed. And if you have Horse’s Ass Award recommendations please email me at princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com

We last looked at the Howard Theater, located at T St, NW near Florida Ave, almost a year ago. Sadly it seems there has been very little progress. I’m not sure if this deserves a “Horses Ass Award” but it pains me to see zero external movement on this great structure. I wonder how much blame is due to the economy?

“Dear PoP,

The post about the dead tree at the police station got me thinking… how about you have a once-a-week post about something in one of the neighborhoods that needs to be fixed/repaired?

The San Francisco Chronicle has a similar feature called “Chronicle Watch”… They describe the problem, and then report back 15-30 days later on the status… Here is a link – click on a few to get the idea: http://www.sfgate.com/columns/chroniclewatch/archive/

I think this is a great idea. I propose we call it the Horses Ass Award. I’ll make the first nomination. I’m very disappointed in the progress at 3145 Mt. Pleasant Street which was gutted by fire.
