From Ivy & Coney:

“Ivy and Coney, DC’s premier baseball bar, is proud to announce the third annual Chai-vy and Cohen-y Hanukkah Bar: Bar Mitzvah1. Bar. Mitzvah (We invite you to let our amazing wordplay sink in for a moment). From December 2nd through New Years’ Eve of the year 5780, the Manischewitz shall flow, the dreidels shall spin and fun will be had by all. While some may prefer their holiday festivities as “Christmas-with-a-baseball-twist”, we’re pitching ours as “Baseball-with-a-Hanukkah-fastball.” Simply put, it’s gonna be meshuga2.

In honor of our holiday that involves actual fire (not just some wimpy string lights and pine trees), we’ve added delicious latkes, sufgani-shots (jelly donut in shot form), 8-night fiery cider (Hint: it starts with fire and ends in ball) and Manischewitz’s finest kosher wines to the menu. Latkes, arguably the most important culinary creation since unleavened bread, will feature prominently as a reminder of both that the oil used to light the menorah in the holy temple and that fried foods truly are the tastiest. Each night we will be lighting the Hanukiyah at approximately 7:30 PM (December 22nd through the 29th) and invite our guests to participate. (more…)

Thanks to Charles for coming through with this great comic. WMATA can certainly use some love at the moment.

I hope everyone has a relaxing weekend and wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Oh yeah, and enjoy the three day weekend too!

At first glance I just thought this was a Christmas Tree with some ornaments on it, which would’ve been cool in and of itself. But then I saw a house had set up an extension cord for lights. I couldn’t stick around till it got dark but I bet it looks amazing all lit up. Props to French Street (between 9th and 10th in Shaw).

I love spotting people taking their Christmas trees home by foot. It always puts a smile on my face. It’s gotta be my decades long Christmas tree envy or something…

In case you missed the post a couple weeks ago, here are reader suggestions for where to get a Christmas tree in DC.

This is the first house with Christmas lights I’ve seen so far (from Petworth on New Hampshire Ave). But what I really liked about this one was the bug zapper on the porch glowing along with the Christmas lights.

From the the Recreation.gov Web site:

“You can submit a lottery application here for The 2009 National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony beginning at 12:01 AM (EST) Wednesday November 4, 2009 through midnight (EST) Friday November 6, 2009.

The 2009 National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony The ceremony is a time-honored holiday tradition which includes the illumination of the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse just south of the White House. Nationally known entertainers and the United States Marine Corps Band add to the celebratory evening in which the President is invited to bring a message of peace to the nation and the world. With the White House as the back drop, in what becomes the “Christmas Pathway of Peace”, the National Christmas Tree and 56 smaller trees – one for each state, five territories, and the District of Columbia – serve as the event focal point.”
