17th and Corcoran Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know why there have been two soldiers and DC police outside Safeway on 17th Street NW past couple of days?”

Ed. Note: We’ve noted a National Guard presence at some NPS run parks but this is the first report we’ve gotten from outside a business. I’m guessing they are just helping police enforce the ‘you must wear a mask’ before entering a grocery store rule. Anyone else see the National Guard posted at spots besides parks?

“Dear PoPville,

I am a first responder directly supporting our nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I work 12-14 hour shifts, including overnights and on weekends and holidays, which leaves me precious little time to go shopping and run errands. The recent reduction in the opening hours of many grocery and big box stores has only exacerbated this situation for healthcare workers, first responders, emergency managers and other essential personnel like me. Ed. Note: CityPaper reported on this issue and noted: “The city’s hotline for home-bound residents to call if they’re in need of groceries or other essentials is 1-888-349-8323. It launched April 13.”

“Dear PoPville,

I have a chronic illness called ME/CFS that limits my ability to get groceries for myself or walk considerable distances (here’s a bit on a project I started before all this hit to help people suffering from this worldwide, most of whom are unable to work and 1 of 4 are housebound or bedbound for life.)

I see various resources for helping people get free or low cost meals, resources for the elderly, but have not seen anything for disabled, chronically ill individuals. I used to rely on Amazon Prime Now for groceries (as have many disabled individuals) and now can’t access it since the system is jammed up with able-bodied people suddenly using it. (more…)

Santander Bank N.A. and EagleBank are providing the construction financing.

Construction on The Hartley is expected to begin in May 2020 with completion of the project in early 2022. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m super frustrated with the whole situation – we have tried to get delivery slots without luck, and we had 2 curbside pickups at nearby Giants canceled. We scheduled a pickup at store way out in the MD ‘burbs, which was not canceled, but they were out of half of the things we ordered, including basics like milk, chicken, and spinach. I put on my mask and physically went to the Petworth Safeway two weeks ago very early on a Saturday morning, but the store was still uncomfortably crowded and it was impossible to stay 6 ft apart. Would love to hear others’ recent experiences.”

Has anyone had success with the Our Streets Supplies Map? Has the consensus for best times to go shopping changed?

“Dear PoPville,

For several years now, I’ve been annoyed by the inability to buy alcohol in grocery stores before 9a when DC law allows it after 7a.

See, say, Section 25-722

In normal times, no big deal, I’d go elsewhere. But in COVID-nation, I try to minimize the times I go out – and minimize the chances of encountering larger groups when I do go out. So, I’ve been grocery shopping around 7-8a on Fridays at the Giant in Columbia Heights. But the Booze Barricade is always up. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to alert the public that Target in Columbia Heights is not following the city’s guidelines on masks.

I just left there and few customers and even fewer employees were wearing masks. When I questioned the people working the door, they said that it wasn’t Target’s policy to turn away unmasked customers and that if I had a problem, I could shop elsewhere. (more…)
