Did anyone know about this? I just happened to walk it by it and I was able to speak with owner, Joe Carmack, at the original store (open for 7 years) up the block at 1801 14th Street. This new location is located right at the corner of 14th and Church just a few blocks south. Carmack told me that the new store will focus on interior gardening while the original store will continue to focus on exterior gardening. The new space will feature items to decorate inside homes as well as for “outdoor rooms”. In addition to indoor plants and accessories there will also be plant based products such as candles with plant scents. Other options to be featured include picnicking items and other gifts for garden enthusiasts. Carmack says “there are always lots of people moving to new places in DC and garden items make great gifts!”. The store is currently open although when I peeked inside there was still some arranging going on. After the jump you can see a photo of the inside space. (more…)

So what do you think about ivy growing up rowhouses? Is it intentional? Are folks just big fans of Wrigley Field?

These cabbage things are all over DC. You see ’em in white and purple and they are not very pleasing on the eye. So why are these all over the place, just because they can live through winter?

Knights are cool in certain circles, I can respect that, if not necessarily for myself. But pigs? I guess it is kind of beautiful thing. Screw all this damn conformity. If folks want to put pig sculptures in front of their house, then God bless ’em. Like the Knights though, I also would’ve loved to have heard this conversation between the husband and wife…oh never mind. Check out a closeup of the pig in full glory after the jump. (more…)

A reader wants to know:

“How can we get a farmer’s market in Petworth?

Maybe it can be on Upshur St. near Domku. Any suggestions? Soon it will be Spring, and I would prefer not to trek to Dupont, U St. or Takoma for fresh vegetables. On a related matter, is there a group of folks in Petworth that grow vegetables and fruits in their yards? If so, it would be great to connect with everyone. I am just getting ready to get the soil tested and by the looks of it there is a lot of clay! It would be great to exchange tips of what grows well around here and learn from each other!”

I once posted on this neat school garden in the past. But this past weekend I was fortunate enough to encounter a bike tour being lectured about the garden. What I witnessed was “a bike tour of vegetable and herb gardens at local schools! Come learn about home-grown goodness at our city’s schools from people involved with the projects.”

There was a suggested donation of $10 to benefit the Women’s Garden Cycles Tour, a documentary project traveling by bike from Washington, DC to Montreal collecting stories from community gardeners.

For more information about future tours contact Emily at [email protected].

Pretty, pretty cool! Who knew cool things like this existed in DC?

The tiered approach is really catching on. Which one do you like better?

I found this garden behind a pretty rough looking school on 13th St. The school has grates or bars over all window and looks pretty imposing. But if you walk around the back you see a bit of humanity in this garden. It must be fun for the students to maintain.
